This Urban Worm Bag's 1st harvest is a beast!! And I could have pulled out more!! Watch as I show you how to prep your worm bin prior to pulling your garden gold out of the bottom as you create natural organic fertilizer out of your food scraps, shredded cardboard & paper in the form of worm castings!!
In this video I also take a quick look at out last feeding and give you three angles of the harvest from down below the Urban Worm Bag. See if you can spot The Executive Producer's helping hand about half way through!
Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 3 worm composing bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 3 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / vermicompostlearnbydoing

My wife and I have started vermicomposting as well as a normal compost bin. I see a couple things wrong with your approach, just trying to help. We are trying to keep everything as organic and natural as possible. Anything with chemicals or bacteria that we do not want in the compost we are avoiding. The white napkins and papertowels are white due to bleach, allowing them to break down into your compost is adding bleach and other chemicals to your soil & castings. There will be glue on the paper towel rolls. I am avoiding all chemicals that I possibly can which is why i am making my own compost fertilizer to begin with.
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost Год назад
@@Archipocalypse Great points!! That is fantastic that you are going as natural as possible!! Finding the right level of "natural" and "organic" is not always black and white and is important to try to decide what amount you are willing to accept or not accept! I'm not too worried about bleach as it naturally breaks down pretty quickly as does most anything that oxidizes to clean things. But what has me more curious are the volatile organic compounds use in just about every manufacturing process out there!! Many glues and dyes are made with soy/vegetable/cellulose based products so again those don't bother me as much as what is used to make recycled paper and cardboard...again volatile organic compounds. I like the idea of disposing of my cardboard & paper waste through my worms (which are very good at detoxifying things, as they have been used to clean up toxic waste sites) but I wish I had more trees with leaves I could use in my worm bins. We have a lot of palms and pine trees around us. In a perfect world I would grow my own food so I can control completely what goes in or out of it...but as soon as we buy any fruit, vegetables or anything that was in a container...it has assuredly gotten the same volatile organic compounds absorbed into it from being against cardboard, waxes, plastics etc. If you think about it, It is enough to drive you bonkers!! Thanks so much for your insights and sharing how you are keeping things as natural as possible!! I appreciate you taking the time to watch & comment!!🪱🪱🪱

The whole thing of needing to get down on all fours, or on your back, to harvest the system is - to me - a major downside to running a CFT system. Probably the main reason why I have been reluctant to get my VermiBag Mini in service again. Anyhow, it looks like the first harvest went well - although the stuff was put right back into the system. I've been thinking of relaunching my CFT using what is already well underway in my yellow buckets. This way whatever I end up harvesting will be - most likely - finished castings :)

Sounds like an amazing idea for starting a CFT. Always seems like it's the initial filling is the sticky point.

It reminds me a lot of milking a cow, next time I'll probably just saddle up to the side of it and get out what I need without laying down to see what's going on as I do it. I think a stand built up a little higher would help me out as I have to bend over pretty far as I fill and feed it. I'll eventually figure out a good system as I plant harvest at least monthly. I think your yellow buckets would be a great restart to your VermiBag Mini!! For now it's making a great shelf for your other worm bins!! Thanks for stopping by AV!!🪱🪱🪱

I’m with you on the DOWN side of harvesting! I’m going to empty mine soon after I build a raised frame for it so it will be about 2.5’ off the ground. Then I’ll be able to put a larger bin under it too. My second harvest gave me almost a full 5 gallon bucket of very clean castings. The last gallon had more than worms than the first part so should have stopped.

I have a vermi hut and been eyeing the urban worm bag vs hungry bin. Apparently if u buy the urban worm bag alone, it comes with instructions to build ur own frame. Wondering if anyone has tried those instructions snd just raise 2 fr, I want it high enough to use a 5 gallon bucket under and so I can side on a short stool to harvest. Any downside to doing that? Dangerous to have it that high up?

I also stuff my veg and fruit peelings into the empty toilet paper tubes. Within 48 hours the tubes are almost bursting with my red wigglers ! ! ! It almost as though they think they have never had anything to eat ! It is also a great way to bait out the squirmy wormy ones when getting ready to start another new bin. They eventually eat up the tubes also. Happy worming around all you worm raisers!

Right now the top sits below my waist so I have to bend over pretty severely when I dig in...I just need to find the right blocks or other contraption to put it on. I also bought a mortar tray for underneath wich should help out immensely! My next video of this bin will be another harvest & I'm gonna try it a little differently. Thanks Brian!! This does hold a lot of material and produces a lot of castings in a relatively small space!! Like I mentioned in the other comment I use my iPhone to do almost all of my filming and use the Go Pro and other cameras as back ups and different view cameras when I film these videos. The Go Pro has so many great features and I love all the accessories you can get to really get great angles or on the go type video. I use a normal tripod for my videos but I have an octopus like mini tripod whose legs bend and wrap around things so I can get really difficult shots. The different brackets that come with the Go Pro can be adapted to other cameras so I've been able to use my iPhone and Insta cameras on the different tripods and various holders. I hope this helps...I'm no camera expert but ultimately my iPhone is the work horse of my up close vermicomposting videos! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱

Your videos are exceptionally well done. The instructions you give, your camera work and the detail right on target. I noticed on a few of your video's you fed your worm potato scraps. I read the following about potatoes and worms. As a member of the nightshade family, potatoes are relatively high in solanine. Solanine is a toxin that acts as a pesticide. So, it should come as no surprise that compost worms avoid the potato peels they’re served. However, like all organic matter, potatoes will eventually break down and become transformed.

Thank you so much for the kind words & recognition of the effort we put into the videos! Unfortunately I had shoulder surgery 3 weeks ago & it has been next to impossible to edit our recent videos we haven't released yet...It seems like most tubers & other root vegetables have evolved some unique abilities to fend off pests & microbes! That makes sense based on the length of time I see it take for the worms to eat those foods. Thanks so much for passing on the information!! & of course thanks for all your support!!🪱🪱🪱

Great first harvest. I was going to say the same as Sandra about so many worms being in the bottom; not just the moisture, but the heat may have pushed some down there too. Either way, even if they're just 'finishing off' what's down there this time, it's going to be a good comparison for the next harvest. Also, seems like we're both getting hit by storms. It's all I have in my forecast for two weeks!

Patrick, did you pat the sides to allow the castings and bedding to fillip the bottom of the worm bag?

😂 It felt good to give them a little love tap after worrying me with all the heat the last several weeks!! The bottom bladder like black area already seemed full but I did that based on the recommendation from Steve, the founder of the Urban Worm Company. He did a Live where he harvested a UWB and he mentioned to give it a few punches incase there was any bridging of material holding up the castings. I didn't feel anything fall down and the entire contents didn't come pouring out so I'd say the tapered design with a broad part in the lower section works well!! The castings looked pretty good for a first harvest and definitely were usable if I needed them. I'm hoping they help add to the biology of the new stuff I put in! Oh man, we gotta get you a tune up!!😀 My knees and hips hurt just reading that! Ya, I'd say getting it up on blocks would be a must for any one that doesn't get down and up off the ground easily. I've seen some DIY designs with taller legs that may also work, but in the end you have to be able to get your arm pit over the top to reach down while also being able to reach the bottom while harvesting. This range is different for everyone of every height and mobility status so I guess it's hard to thread the needle. Great questions!! I have a coule of videos where I show you how I store castings: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WCevZRPuYug.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WMVNEk57ORs.html They can be stored for a long time (months, probably even a year or more) if they have air and some moisture. There are most likely some cocoons in your castings as well so they will eventually hatch baby worms. So you can occasionally but a small piece of food in there to feed the new baby worms or set up a bait cup to bait out the baby worms. The worm castings are teaming with beneficial microbes that need oxygen, so it is important not to seal any container you put them in. I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Very interesting because I've been thinking of selling my 2 towers and getting one of these. I am finding that lifting the heavy trays is getting hard for me because I'm not as strong as I used to be. I was wondering about whether I could get the castings or not. Is there enough room then or not? I asked the company if they could Shorten the legs so I could put it up on a table. But that might make it too high so I couldn't see in it to feed. After using that one for 6 months, what do you think?
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost Год назад
You might be able to hold on to the towers and maybe run the trays half full and only use three trays...this should help with weight. This UWB is a beast! It is very heavy so once you put it somewhere, that's it...unless you have a couple of strong folks to lift it (my son and I lifted it into the house when we were on vacation). The bag itself, when full, from top to bottom is two feet two inches tall (the stand from top to bottom is about 2 1/2 feet). As long as the top of it is lower than your armpit you can get in to feed it and harvest out of the bottom without too much trouble since it will be up way higher than what I have mine. I am six feet tall and have to bend way over as I feed mine. I would love to build a stand that lifted it one or two feet higher. I hope this helps!! At this point I am still super agile so I don't mind being up and down off the ground...it is the bending over while I'm doing videos that is reminding me I have a lower back!! Thanks so much for watching Cookie!!🪱🪱🪱

@@Vermicompost thank you so much, Patrick. You are always so helpful. God bless you with all the work that you do to help the rest of us in our Venture into vermicomposting! So I'm wondering how much space does a person really need from the bottom of the bag to the tabletop or floor in order to get the castings out the bottom?
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost Год назад
@@cookie761 Thank you Cookie!! I was able to harvest with just 3 to 4 inches of space with the stand sitting directly on the ground, so if the table top is level with the bottom of the stand then it is no problem! The bag doesn't hang so low that it hits the ground so it is always the perfect amount of room from the bottom of the bag to the ground...but putting the legs on blocks will add more distance from the bottom of the bag to the ground...so having a deeper bin to catch castings as they fall would be helpful in that case (or also putting blocks under whatever you use to catch the castings when you harvest). I'd say having it no more than a foot higher one could harvest while sitting in a chair!

Ive never harvested my casting bc i can't separate the worms from the casting. What's the best way?
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost Год назад
Great question!! There are no super fast super easy ways to harvest castings that I have found but there are some relatively faster and easier ways. The hardest way but very meditative is to pluck the worms out one by one as I did here (I promise it is a fun video😂) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Img2UsmHL3A.html A more common way is to use a 1/4th inch sifter which will separate most of the worms and bigger pieces from the castings as I show here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tI--M5E-oKg.html Another way to use a sifter that takes less actual time doing something but a little more time total is to fill the sifter with castings and put it on top of another worm bin, then you agitate the castings for a minute and the worms go down between the holes for the next 10 minutes or so. Then you scrape off the top castings, agitate again and wait again, repeating until you are done like in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gzoOUqi6CBk.html You can also feed on one side of your bin and let the worms migrate over to that side while you harvest the other, this will likely take days to weeks. There are some other more commercial techniques with machinery but nothing I've tried. Moist castings are harder to sift, so I always try to dry by bins out a little as we approach a harvest. I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching and asking a great question!!🪱🪱🪱

How can kill mites in and around my garden?
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 5 месяцев назад
Great question! The mites found in a worm bin are not the same species of mites that you find in your garden eating on your leaves. The mites in a worm bin only eat dead and decaying matter. Spraying your garden with worm, casting tea might be an option to reduce spider mites in your garden. Here's a video that kind of explains it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q-Lfcsx0xUM.html I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Why did ya put the harvest back on top??
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost Год назад
Great question!! The instructions mention putting the initial harvest or two back into the bin if it is not composted enough to your liking...it actually looked pretty good but I already have enough for now so I'm gonna let the worms break them down even more. It should also help to add more helpful biology to the new food scraps and bedding I add in the coming weeks. I'm probably gonna go back in and harvest in another month and maybe add that back in as well and then I'll just take them and store them from that point on. I hope that helps!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch & ask a great question Debbie!!🪱🪱🪱

⚡⚡⚡ Cool! Love to hear thunder. We do not get that much of it here. So, the harvest looks pretty close to what you find in most worm tower composters at the bottom. I still see plenty of worms (Steve!). So, we shall see on your next harvest if more devoid of worms on the bottom. I was a skeptic of the claim the guy made saying it would just be all castings.....but thats ok. Your the first youtuber to demonstrate it from start to finish. That I like 👍👍👍👍🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost Год назад
The thunder & lightning was pretty crazy while we were filming!! It's that time of year for us!! The instructions mention maybe putting your first couple of harvests back on the top if they are not to the level of vermicompost you want...which makes sense because some people probably fill it half way with bedding during the first feeding and some probably just put a small layer down and keep it going up slow. I'd say I probably was somewhere in between with putting a lot of bedding down initially and then again during some of my outrageous feedings😂🤣😂 I think once I start treating it normally it will treat me normally!! I think I would have fewer worms on the bottom if the following weren't happening...1. I have serious pockets of heat because of where I have this sitting on my back porch. The castings felt cool so I think the bottom is one of the cool spots for them to flee towards. 2. I was supposed to harvest at day 2 but we had huge (loud) rain all day so I waited until day 4 to finally harvest so some may have gone down. 3. At the beginning I was adding lots of water through a spray bottle and through the condensation that drips off all the frozen water bottles I put in...so I think it was wetter than it will normally run in the future...and all that liquid finds its way down due to gravity. I'm hoping future harvests will be a little more dry but not too much drier than what we saw. All that being said, there were more worms than expected but I don't expect to be able to ever harvest castings with no or even few worms in it...they are just too curious of creatures!! So I'm betting I do a sift or a VermiHut tray with an agitation method to get rid of worms in my future UWB harvests. Thanks so much for all your support Ann!! & thanks for the kind words and for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

What would you normally do with the castings? Do you just dig a hole in the back yard and dump the castings along with the 🪱 🪱 worms? Then once it’s all in the ground you put a plant? I have never raised worms but I want to.
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost Год назад
That is a great question!! I have a couple videos where I explain some of the things I do with my worm castings: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WMVNEk57ORs.html & ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WCevZRPuYug.html Worm castings are a wonderful way to help feed your plants by bringing microbiology to the soil which helps plants uptake nitrogen phosphorus and potassium. It also helps both sandy and clay soils by adding organic matter. I use my worm castings in several ways. 1st I make a worm casting tea out of them to water my plants and quickly get the good microbes to the roots and leaves. I also use about 20% worm castings mixed with 80% regular potting soil for my seed starting mix. I garden a lot in pots, so each year I refresh the soil in my pots with several hands full of worm castings so I can constantly reuse the soil I have without buying new potting soil. I also add a little bit of worm castings into the hole when I plant my seedlings into the ground. Finally, I occasionally top dress my plants with worm castings and water it in. It can take a few seasons but eventually you can go completely synthetic fertilizer free and just use vermicompost & regular compost to get the soil and your plants back to the way they naturally uptake nutrients, thought the symbiotic relationship of fungi & microbes to unleash all the nutrients they need which are already resident in your soil!! I hope this helps!! Vermicomposting is a super addicting hobby!!
