I use my heated mattress mat in winter, lowest setting, min power can keep a bed nice and warm. No point in warming the whole van at night when you just need your body warm 😉

If you're driving US stuff. Just buy a better stereo! Lol. Because I've had both Hondas, (bike and Accord) and GM, Ford and Dodge. Both Dodge and Ford have an array of inexplicable rattles my mechanic and I have deemed not worth chasing down. They won't kill anyone and don't affect how it runs. Minus a throaty rattle from under the back wheel wells. That's springs. Replaced both on the Ford (ok, Mercury Sable, but SAME thing, lol). I wasn't hauling rocks or anything. Low miles. We do have snow/salt here. Garage space is expensive. You CAN replace ONE if you want to hold onto 500+ dollars til the other actually breaks. I got 2 years that way. If it's lopsided, you can fix that then and replace the other side, too.

I’ve been living in Toyota Dolphins for years. I’ve had 4. My current one is amazing. Small, but still has toilet, shower, fridge, oven, stove, heater, water heater, movie theater (protect anything from phone etc). My son even plays x box in it. Is all run on solar and propane. I lost my business and home due to Covid - but I still have a home! What a blessing.

Dolphins are awesome! Good old Toyota bones and engineering. Just saw a van tour of one and was super impressed by the amenities for the compact size. Sorry to hear about your situation. Glad you still have your home on wheels. Check out CheapRV Living's channel and website/forum. You may find some of the info helpful. Suggestion for front window visibility - have a tint shop put a 90% dark strip across the front window that cuts off just above your eye sight line, usually about same height as rearview mirror is mounted. It acts as a permanent sun visor that you can see through. Your eyes will thank you after the first long day of driving. You might even be able to use the front facing camera that way. Regarding road noise- next van your first step, before insulation, should be an application of noico or sound deadening of some sort. You dont have to cover all the metal, just about 30% of the large flat panels that vibrate and flex in transit.

Be aware of the AS1 line neR top of windshield. Some states allow nothing below that AS1 line & often have other tinting restrictions.

Great video. I can relate to so much of it. I did my own conversion on my 2017 Dodge Ram Promaster 2500 high roof 159” wb. All by myself. And I was under pressure to get it done quickly, considering I had no help and wanted a lot of accoutrements. Must say after watching your video I feel pretty good about my conversion. I opted for two roof vent fans and so glad I did. I also installed a sink and a 12v water pump because I could anticipate the difficulty and frustration you’ve had with the manual water pump. Something else I did you didn’t do is install a 2x3 framed, insulated wall between my cab and the living space. It provides a bit more security, privacy, sound dampening and most of all a huge help with climate control in the living space. And I built a small door to pass through between the cab and living space. And I carry a portable air compressor with me that I consider essential. I use for some pneaumatic tools I’ve used to complete my build after I started living full time in it beginning in February 2019 and use it on my van and ebike tires. And hell yeah you need refrigeration, imho. I also installed a solar system that has been great. I really like that rear view cam you’ve got! My camper van is far from perfect and you are absolutely correct advising people this lifestyle is a lot of fun and should GO FOR IT if they want to.
@CLdriver1960
@CLdriver1960 3 года назад
You’re right about the vent fan, you need an ‘air in’. Consider getting rain deflectors on your driver and passenger window. They’re relatively cheap and will provide much needed ventilation in your van.

Well the whole thing about heating isn't just to keep yourself warm, its even more import to dry the van as condensation constantly builds up. This is extremely important in a van as it got a metal shell. Your little propane heater just makes things worse as it produces moisture. You will eventually get rot and rust issues. You need a dry heat source and air extraction. This is why a proper diesel or gasheater with external air intake and exhaust aling with a powerful extraction fan in the ceiling is crucial to keep the van rust and rot free.....
@moregrouchy

Especially with that fluffy insulation that holds moisture like a damp rag.
@torevalberg3510
@torevalberg3510 3 года назад
@@moregrouchy if that is sheep wool, thats a good thing IF there is proper ventilation and heating. But its also good to actually cover the metal with self adhesive foam to prevent condensation. Ive seen a few vans built by that company, and all i can say is that the company has a huuuuge profit margin. Id never pay that for that basic conversion. It seems they are doing everything to keep cost down and make cash.
@torevalberg3510
@torevalberg3510 3 года назад
The basic way wayfarer builds these vans, without extremely good heating and ventilation you are pretty much guaranteed rot and rust within a few years. Its a shame building out brand new vans like that :( its all about short term cash making here
@avivamae5171
@avivamae5171 3 года назад
@@torevalberg3510 exactly! They skip so many of vital things like sound proofing and proper dry heat to mack a quick buck and benefit from their customers trust and lack of knowledge. I find it to be gross and unethical because now this van is much more likely to rust out faster and he's dealing with crazy road nosie that $200 of material and an hour or two would have fixed.
@nataliaportal5346
@nataliaportal5346 3 года назад
@@torevalberg3510 Out of curiosity I checked out their website and was like heck no I would not pay that much for that little of an installation. Funny as hell video! Anyone who's owned a van can relate. 1. Bose over the ear headphones! 2. Sinks? like cooking in a closet! 3. Fridge yes, reach for cold water/beer. 4.Brilliant swivel captains chair, I'm sure you spent hours editing, dreaming, great use of space and gained a hard sell alternative to packed coffee shops/libraries. Vans clutter, u end up with 20 coffee cups in no time. These days when hotels are dying for your business and campgrounds are over run with idiots bringing their house and noise I agree you need freedom to flex. Since you're lucky NOT to be carrying huge amounts of say windsurfing gear I think you did very well. It's not your comfortable house, it's the great outdoors! Cook outside, make a mess! @@mckenzieb1001 I am 21 now, i have also spent many hours researching van/skoolie life. I have spent the past two years of my life saving up to take the leap. My main issue is the confidence to leave and somehow find the ability to make money during my travels. I graduated college, but that hasnt helped me with a remote job. I have 20k saved up but no vehicle yet, what do you suggest?
@mckenzieb1001
@mckenzieb1001 3 года назад
@@keelanesquivel3854 Something I had to internalize is that if that if most of us want to make a change in our lives like this happen, you have to have a good degree of trust in yourself that you'll be able to deal with problems as they arise. You can only plan for the unplanned and be confident in yourself. Also get comfortable with helpful strangers, they come out of the woodwork! I've had some crappy days and kinda scary nights, but it's always worth it :) The work from home question is unanswerable I've decided. Personally I've stopped for work so far, and it gives me a great opportunity to really dive into a new locality- but I never actually want to stop :P I think that shouldn't stop you from going. $20k is plenty to build a rig if you're thrifty, and have some left over to get you moving. Going slower makes the money go farther, and you can stretch it until you hit a floor and decide to find some local work. All the while be thinking and experimenting with ways that feel right for you to work from home. I'm dabbling into buying small items wholesale for eBay, doing small solar installs, and metalworking stuff for Etsy- hoping one of those will take roots and become more stable income for myself. Hard to answer all that in paragraph or two! It's so different for everyone based on tolerances for this and that~ You'll feel out what's right for you! And you can always fix mistakes as you go, so don't be scared of them :)

Great overview! Thanks...the one missing piece is the road shower which I can’t do without. I’m thinking of installing a convertible solution that won’t cannibalize the interior space. But I like your very simple, and practical layout!

A circular polarizing filter will help with glare on the dashcam. Some sound deadening in the doors would help a ton with road noise

They make vinyls for that purpose for windows. Don't know how well it works, especially not on a car. I consider it part of the experience. Lol.

Nice van, nice video. I self-built my 2017 Ram 1500 low roof. Twin bunks and a separate "room" for toilet and shower. Long trips and day trips are great. Highly recommend this platform. Keep it at 60 and you get better mpg and less much less road noise. Thanks.

Agree. At many thousands of pounds, yeah, you don't want to be racing. E=Mc2. Lol

I have started with insulating my van, and just after doing the ceiling, it's a ton warmer. I'm so excited to finally move into my van, hopefully in January

We have 2 in our motorhome, usually have one pulling air in and the other pushing air out. Very efficient, low use of power.

I'm still looking for the right van. The smarties thing I did was use sleeping bags, -6 in Moab no problem, if a sleeping bag can keep you warm in a tent then it will work in the van besides blankets are for in a house with A/C or a heater going

Go to RV shows and take VERY specific notes. Take off your shoes and hop in the shower in particular. See if the soap dish hits you in the spine (saw this) or the spigots are right in the way! Or you trip over the toilet or crack you knee on something stupid. Pretend you're actually in there doing stuff. What's cool vs. What's irritating? For 50k plus, you shouldn't find ANY annoyances, imo. Obviously, you put the spigots where the glass panels fold back along w soap dish and shampoo shelf over that. If you can't move your arms around, don't bother. If the skylight is 3 inches in a stupid place (if you're tall, you'll crack your head), move on. They SHOULD do better for that kind of bank.

For the foot pedal, you could cut away a spot in the cupboard over the floor so you could put the pedal on the floor and just slide your foot in just enough to hit it. That way the pedal is out of the way and you don’t need to move the pedal every time you use the sink.

Great video and topic. I love my van, still working on finishing her up but i'm finding it hard to make decisions on the directions I want to go. Seems like every decision hinges on the other. haha. Good stuff though, gave me some things to think about and made it easier to cross things off I was already on the fence about! Thanks Brian!
