I always heard that the south has a food called "grits" and was scared to try it when I was on my high school senior trip in South Carolina. I tried it. That was the biggest surprise ever, because it was great! Imagine eating really small rice kernels (a lot like cous cous) with butter. Wow! Oh, that was so good! Always love your videos, BabbleTop!!!
South Carolina's official snack food is boiled peanuts. There are not many people who eat the peanut shells though. If you get one with a soft shell you can eat that one and it is called a goober. Fried okra and collard greens are southern favorites. Also fried catfish is not healthy. I liked the video although I was grossed out by gizzards and chitterlings which i never plan to try. LOL
Bread pudding is delicious! Every once in a while I make a breakfast bread pudding. I use maple syrup to sweeten it with some pecans, bacon and raisins mixed in. Once it has set, I brush some maple syrup on top and put it back in the oven for a few minutes. My wife and kids love it. Also it has been WAY too long since I've had chicken fried steak.

(Calling the horrific Expulsion of the Acadians, or Le Grand Derangement, as a "forced relocation" is a good call on staying neutral and keeping it light. It is still a touchy subject here in the Maritime Provinces.) I wonder if Chicken and Dumplings has a similar origin to the Beignets. Acadians still make Chicken Fricot (Pronounced "frrree-ko, roll those r's), a thick soup made with leftover chicken, veggies, dumplings and summer savoury. The latter is a popular herb in Acadian cooking as it was available locally back in the early days of French colonization. And everyone knows that mameres (grandmothers) make the best dumplings and the best fricot. I'm not Acadian by birth, but fricot is comfort food for sure. And the Quebec chain St. Hubert's makes the best chicken pot pie, by the way. Cheers.
"Burgoo" and "Brunswick stew" might have specific recipes in the north but in the south it's called camp stew or leftover stew and consists of whatever you have available, usually basic vegetables and meat.
When I was visiting my sister in New Orleans, my family and I made sure to go to Cafe Du Monde for their Beignets. It was out of this world and incredibly addictive. I could not get enough of them, they were that terrific. And I’m not someone who has a sweet tooth. If you’ve never had them, you don’t know what you’re missing. If there’s a place near me (I live in New York) that makes them, I’d love to go there and have some.
Most of these I've tried.... And they are not only hearty and delicious.... They are very nostalgic of a peaceful and simpler time.... Whereas most notably the few that are understandably will make your stomach turn at the thought of what it really is and/or where it's from.... Most southern foods are amazingly delicious and will have you coming back for seconds thirds or even fourths!! (Although I was born and raised in the midwest my family like many families originated from the south and many of these dishes I've had the opportunity of seeing and eating firsthand.... And yeah.... even the chitlins and NO I DIDN'T EAT THEM AND I NEVER WILL!!!! 🤢🤮)
Oh, man, BabbleTop, you really did it today! I've never become so hungry from watching a video before! Jeez!! Never tried the gizzards, but would happily give it a try. (We eat a lot of unusual organs here in Taiwan, so I'm sure I would love that.) Chicken and dumplings? A Kentucky friend shared his with me once. Very good. My "Mom's recipe beef stew" that I make often has the same dumpling thing going on, so I get the idea. It's even better when warmed up the next day. Boiled peanuts? In Taiwan, we have steamed peanuts that vendors all say comes from a place called Bak Gang. Nobody eats the shell, but they're easy to split open and eat the peanuts. My Mom makes the best chicken pot pie ever. I think she puts a can of Campbell's cream of mushroom soup in there. It really holds the heat, though, so you need to be careful not to burn your mouth. About 15 years ago, there was a western restaurant in Taipei City that had biscuits and gravy, but renamed it "sh*t on a shingle" at it was traditionally called. I've scoured Google Maps and can't find the place anymore, but they put some kind of dried beef in the sauce. It was awesome. Chitlin's and Brunswick stew? Bring them on!!! Great video, BabbleTop!!!

Chester's fried Chicken which is found inside of some Love's truck stops around the US they cook chicken gizzards and they are delicious... Chester's Cooks them to order so they're fresh when you get them and they're worth it!
When you're on a road trip in the southern US states and you're near a "Love's Truck stop" and they have a "Chester's Fried Chicken" in that location...STOP...they sell fried chicken gizzards and they're REALLY GOOD because actually...Chester's Fried Chicken is some of THE BEST fried chicken in the country... many truck drivers have had many satisfying meal there...I had Thanksgiving dinner at Chester's... with fried chicken and fried gizzards THAT GOOD...to go with their fried corn, mashed potatoes, biscuits, other sides and apple pies, YOU will leave there completely satisfied!

No to gizzards, never heard of this. Buttermilk Pie is great, never heard of the other. Catfish is the best fish. Pork, beef & chicken for Brunswick stew....yum.
New sub here! I'm glad this video popped up in my recommendations! I'm 60 yrs old and have lived in NC all my life. I love to cook and am really good at it (lol). I've made every one of these dishes except the chitterlings. Great video!
See this is what I don't get is your video a year ago about American foods that need to be banned included chicken fried steak but this one included it as a must try. I love chicken fried steak so I agree with this one
Gizzard and Chitlins are the only things on this list that no one in the north has had. Hell, I live in Washington state and even had all this list except the gross two in my state. Is every one of your list written by people that have always lived in their mother's basement and never set foot outside of the house?
Gizzards suck Chitlins won't even try. Love my biscuits and gravy, ambrosia salad, Banana's Foster, Chicken pot pie. But where the hell is BBQ on the list you want good BBQ you have to go to the south.
Where did you get this information? I Oliver in Many states in the South and these foods aren't "served in almost any restaurant in the South" or cooked in the South but just once in a blue moon...if the family has ever heard of it. Just because bourbon is made in KY doesnt mean that you'll find bourbon bread pudding or have it made by people in the South. Peanuts ...not at all. The first time I heard of boiled peanuts was when I came to FL WHERE I NOW LIVE.😂 Catfish isnt found in all of the South but IN CERTAIN STATES OF THE SOUTH. DON'T LIE JUST TO HAVE LIKES OR AUDIENCE, FOR THAT MATTER. YOU'RE going to make people who visit the South fools of themselves when they ask at a restaurant about many of the foods you are mentioning here.
ummmm.... did you say "eaten in Kentucky" while showing a cut from a Popeyes commercial? And say chicken fried steak and country fried steak are interchangeable terms?
Hmm. Can't narrate how to cook soul food if you don't know anything about it. Black folk don't deep fry chitterlings as a rule. Collard greens is cooked with smoke turkey, ham hocks and not necessarily bacon. .
