@@denverdubois5835 I'm sure there's a few ticking time bombs. I just really hope all this has opened their eyes to what such neglect could do. Unfortunately they wouldn't look at the people deceased from their neglect as the most important factor. It would be the possible loss of income they wouldn't be making if the building collapsed as well for their reputation. A damn shame this happened in such a modern age.. Not because of mother nature or a freak accident; rather neglect/greed. Something that could have been prevented if they looked at human life (customers life) as the most valuable thing. No, they're only $$$ signs until their neglect/greed catches up with them. Value money over human life is the motto.

Agreed, I thought of the same immediately when the presenter mentioned that the condo collapsed unexpectedly since the structure was weaker than expected, the implication being that it had such critically minimal structural margin left that normal pre-weakening and drilling for the explosives left it unable to bear its own dead load - so it's possible that in ten years time or whatever it might have collapsed on its own had it been left standing and occupied.

They cut supports one by one instead of cutting leaving some behind, that made structure very unbalanced (one side had all supports and other had none) so the roof fell, and because it was very heavy it also made enough force to take down the wall. Tragic event caused not by mistake but sheer stupidity.

I remember the Crawford plant. Wasn’t far from where I lived. The twin stacks were a bit of an icon in suburban Chicago (they could be seen from Midway) and it was weird seeing the plant be disassembled bit by bit. Looking at it today (at the time of writing) there’s barely anything left. With Crawford gone, there’s one coal fired plant standing in Chicago (inactive as well) and that is the Fisk Generating Station, standing since 1903. (Current units inside since 1968)

I wonder how many of these buildings contain asbestos and how often it's 'accidentally' overlooked. Removing the stuff is very expensive and I'm sure oftentimes it's illegally ignored because they know that any illness or death related to it would take years to manifest and would be impossible to trace back to them and their demolition.
@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster Год назад
In some cases the explosion site is sprayed heavily with water to stop a possible spread of asbestos. Not sure about the US but here all the alarms go off of they find it before demolishing it (blowing up buildings is reasonably uncommon here because the structures in The Netherlands are usually not big enough to do so, but also in the way of to much other buildings to do it reasonably cheaply. We did however try it with a quay somewhere, and screwed it up by using to much explosives, shattering windows and in a couple of cases cracking walls :P

Here this method of demolition is never used, and I think there are many reasons for it: - it is a lot of work to remove all dangerous materials (asbestos) - then more work to weaken the structure - then more work and expertise to place the explosives - you need to clear the area for the worst-case fall of debris - there is a lot of dust that has to be cleared afterwards - you end up with a pile of rubble that you still need to separate and move away All in all, it just isn't worth it. Disassembling the building piece by piece is as much work, cleaner, safer, environmentally friendly, etc. Even those destruction balls aren't used anymore. Better to use special equipment with hydraulic claws.

We had an old iron bridge that spanned the Mississippi River, called the Marshall Ave./Lake Street bridge. It connected St. Paul with Minneapolis. The "experts" had deemed it too unsafe for more than one truck or bus to pass each other, so they could only cross one at a time, with signs saying, "Buses and Trucks Must Not Meet on Bridge". Well, the big day came when they were gonna blow it up. We all gathered to watch. ka-BOOM! Big explosion. Then nothing. The bridge was still standing there. I guess it wasn't as "unsafe" as they originally thought! 😂

I reckon the Royal Canberra Hospital implosion in 1997 should have made the list with one dead and nine injured. I was there opposite the lake but didn't want to wait around and went back to Sydney instead. Watched it on the news that night: they had used " a little bit" too much explosives and the people injured and killed had been on the opposite shore. Not suggesting that the ones making the list weren't interesting, I enjoyed watching it.
