Working as a chef at a country club this is true our old money members are awesome to everyone usually drives bmws or teslas, local lawyer that always drives his lambo in is the rudest and hands down most hated person from both staff and other members
In my country actually you don’t need to be super rich if u wanna have maids. I have one, of course i always treat her respectfully :). Even my neighbor has 2 maids and one driver
I have some family members who are "old Money" who owns lots of farming land in the north of England and hold the title of Lord, the same title was handed down the family line since the times of the Normans (probably). Most of this video is true, except they don't own yachts or anything new or flashy, to come to that, nor do they splash the cash needlessly for first class seats at sporting events or for first class travel. But they know how to keep their wealth and accumulate more by what seems like magic. The last time I saw my rich great uncle (old money), he looked remark average, he drove a 20 year old Range Rover Defender that looked 40 years old, wore an equally old suit, over coat that had seen better days with pocket watch that must be close to 100 years old. but that suit was from Saville Row and the overcoat was a Burberry and the pocket watch was a Charles Frodsham. A pocket watch that he could sell tomorrow for new Rolex money.
That sounds exactly like my grandpa. He had the title of lord which of course has been handed down and I agree with you. We’ve never had a yacht or anything like that. The only thing he would always tell me was to always wear a watch no matter how simple it is. I’m 18 and that’s the one rule I’ve always stuck to. It doesn’t need to be expensive but just classy. Apparently a watch says a lot about you
Just so, I make do and mend, fixing stuff until my tailor tells me it's actually unwearable.. suits and shoes last decades, tweeds, black tie and white tie. Generations
Same with my old money family members in North Carolina old cars old clothes multiple homes but lots of farmland and Roles worth 10s of thousands of dollars all my younger relatives who have their degrees and fancy jobs have new cars and shiny clothes but complain about tipping
Old money have this quality you just can't describe. they might wear plain white shirt and jeans but the way they carry themselves speaks sophistication and finesse.
Not a hard habit when you don't have to worry about if there's going to be food, will you have enough when you're old and can't work anymore, can all the bills be paid, what's going to happen if I become sick or die and having to work long hours in stressful or labor intensive jobs. All while being trapped with no way out.
My grandparents on my mother’s side were sort of old money. Not super wealthy but definitely from a long line of the upper middle class. Like locally “established” business owners. They “whisper” it much, it wasn’t until after my grandmother died that any of us grandchildren had a clue. Compared to my father’s side, where the minute anyone does “well” for themselves…it has to be known. Not the mention all the incidents of random jealously 😬 In my mother’s side, no one ever expresses an opinion about other people especially about how “well”’they are doing. They are way more focused on themselves. It wasn’t until I understood the social class difference of two families that seem similar, I understood why.
@@LA-wv7gf I totally get that. Actually I found out today on my dad’s side. One uncle who got very wealthy and his son just recently got into trouble because he was bragging about somethings the company was doing and well they didn’t like that. It just wouldn’t happen on my mother’s side, like ever but it’s very typical for him. As for social media, I only ever show landscape shots and very rarely an exceptionally nice meal (like recently I was really blown away by a full restaurant experience on a normal train service). It’s more because I follow / get followed by people with similar interests. I put my day to day stuff on closed stories only very close friends will see.
What whispers old money? Old money people are generally not to be found on the internet. In many cases, there may be very few public pictures of them and they meant it this way.
Old money also shows in physical appearance for example they brightness and flawless of the skin especially in the face. They don't do any makeup but still the skin glows. The way they walk also shows the difference. Most of them are not obesse may be due to eating healthy food for a long time. Old money especially in India don't waste things they just don't throw a car just because it is old they will try to restore it to good condition. Old money keeps home very tidy and all equipments and fittings & water taps in pristine condition so no leaking pipes not working grandfather clock etc. Everything will be taken care by long time trained hands associated with the family for decades if not centuries
That is especially true of Indians in S/Africa. Generally Khans, Singhs, and Maharaj's have this glow and golden hair no makeup but always way way richer than Pillays, Govenders, and Naidoos. We really don't know how it happens but it's abundantly true and never changes thru generations???
because old money has money to buy and install quality items and hire someone to maintain them (gardener, cooks, driver, maid). that's why it stays tidy, working, and orderly for a long time. The have-nots will make do with low quality items, and short of money to look after them.
My family from mothers and father's side are both old money. But due to my parental side's addiction of alcohol from being a rich old money family were now just an almost upper - middle class old money family. We still have a very fine family estate and a name in our town. Everyone in our town knows us and our family....our help staff is also quite old and I'd say I've always felt humble and good except the alcohol addiction part but I will be the first one to break this cycle of alcohol addiction from my father's side and will bring back the old glory of our family again. As for my mother's side my grandfather has really held it together he and his family belonged to generation of riches then during his childhood his father let loose of the money but he brought back the glory days again after working hard and I'm so proud of him and he's a inspiration for he to do the same....and he's also not addicted to alcohol or substances in a bad manner like men in my father's side. Alux has really inspired me to break these generational cycle of trauma and wasting family money. I'll make it great again ! ❤️
Great video! I grew up observing and admiring old money people in the Northeast, considering I was just a working class kid. I adopted many of the old money ways and am now doing better than ever. I encourage people to get with the program...a great way to live. Get that Ivy education, foreign languages and all. Start planning at a young age, 12 or younger, and go from there. You'll be glad you did. Most reading this comment will be older than 12, but make things happen for your children or grandchildren.
To appreciate old money, first you need to become aware that old money exists and is real. The unlucky rarely get that far, but once in a while they do.
@@mobydick3895 That's true. Fortunately for me, I saw both sides of the equation -- old money and no money (as for new money, not much to see there). So, it was a no-brainer pursuing old money values. I was blessed.
i am from the very bottom of the working class…like literally the hood. however, i grew up to get my bachelors in biology, i speak 3 languages, my interests are classical music (i’m a violinist), history, shooting clays, traveling, and i have an oil portrait collection all pre-19th century. i also always dressed modestly and hated flashiness. i feel like i’m very atypical i sometimes wonder how i turned out this way because i don’t know anyone like me where i come from.
In fact, I believe we share a lot of similar interests. I believe exchanging notes would be good because the type of person you are is rare and cherished by me and other like-minded people. Two persons with such humble but similar backgrounds and experiences would very certainly never cross paths in the world's megacities. Allow me, at the very least, to congratulate you on discovering and enjoying a life that many of us could only dream of.
In what world do you guys live in? Old money are the rude and entitled. Did you not even watch the video? They purposely create "rules" for spotting interlopers or people they deem to not be part of the in group. They're very exclusive and don't like hanging around people in their social/economic status. They literally view themselves as better than working class people. New money is more down to Earth because they know what it's like to be poor and to not have. Seriously, what is up with this obsessive romanticism of old money??? These same people look down on you...
I can confirm this is true. The old rich families that I know are real low key. They never show off except for maybe a spoiled child but it's rare. New money on the other hand love to show off every chance they get. Every social media post is just oozing with their attempts at validating their wealth.
Old family furniture is old money. (Great-Grandma invested once in the good stuff; why should we buy new?) It's usually in great shape, because it's been stored and cared for properly. Redecorating the house means cycling fresh stuff out of storage, re-upholstering it to update it, and re-arranging it. Buy a few new pieces of art, choose a currently-fashionable color scheme, and you're back in business. New money buys all-new modern stuff, which they think shows off their good taste. (Architects and interior designers encourage this.) It's usually featureless and boring; and often, it won't last more than a decade or two. And it all looks the same, because nouveaux won't risk doing anything that might offend the tastes of their social betters. Just do it like they do it in AD, they think, and you'll be safe from judgment. A house that shows no past reflects an owner that's trying to obscure his or her origins.
not agree.... furniture is just a preference according to the taste and functional - social dynamic of everyone... Every space is different, so to decide how to furnish each space in the property, several things must be taken into consideration, for example: design of the property, scale of every space, prices & availability of objects, maintenance conditions, versus personal style and way of life, etc... Some people dont wanna live in the same place decades or even a year and also not everyone fits into the same design model... I understand your point of view but doesnt apply in a generalized way, in fact u r right about some kind of people decorate their own places just looking at trends and even magazine gossip just to look cool but even that is a deception for themselves because they don't end up doing a good job that reflects honestly and with order(on balance) who they really are and even acquiring things that they are not going to use in any way, plus in addition to wasting resources in the wrong way, but well, u surely know that nowadays there are snobs, wannabes and narcissists who only pretend to appear as well as there are people who dont have enough clarity and use some decorative guide without proper knowledge or advice.... cheers!
So true. I remember an old money person making the comment that someone had to “buy” their furniture as if that was a sad and awful thing. Good furniture is passed on from generation to generation. Interior designers are only used to replace fabrics that deteriorate over time and choose colors to compliment. A whole home full of new furniture is to be avoided because it screams I have no family history to be proud of and pass down.
@@nicedoppy2077 we aren't talking about everyone - i.e. the general populations taste, preference. We are talking about old money and the sara describes it above, is exactly the way old money decorates. Actually, they don't 'decorate' - they, for the most part, do exactly as she says: pull things out of storage, re-upholster inherited pieces. They very, very seldom - almost never - buy new furniture from a furniture store. If they need something different, they'll frequent their favorite antique store.
My sisters and I all had to get at least one summer job during high school and college to learn the value of a dollar, work well with others, meet new people, and cultivate a work ethic. My dad’s philosophy was that the paycheck was beside the point, it’s the life skills learned that service the long game.
@@djstace808 We were sent to public school because dad said he wasn’t going pay for expensive private school and property taxes. I went to a public Big XII university. I grew up happy and grounded. I developed my own persona over time. My wife and I earn our own living and I was financially independent of my parents since age 24. Dad wanted to abolish the monarchy so to speak. LOL.
You nailed it. Old money ppl that I have seen are refined, cultured and show an air of subdued elegance. They are self assured and have no need to brag. That would be tres gauche.
I’m laughing because the private high school I attended has box seats in the gymnasium. The 32 other gentleman that I graduated with and I have fundraisers/ cigar parties / boxers every year. Didn’t think of it as old money but most of us have known each other since Matchbox cars.
When someone whispers in your ear, "I have a bone to pick with you." Right there is a hint that screams old money. He's quiet, polite, and will address the issue privately.
Swiss vaults with stacks of Gold. Old weapons from their ancestors who fought at such and such battle or who defeated such and such’s troops. Things that work from brands which no longer exist. And a certain easy confidence that comes from hours spent in nature quietly.
one thing that whispers old money is their traditions , i once watched a video on the Prince of Jaipur and the palace was adorned with some really high class wood furniture that can last for decades
"Success is like being pregnant, everyone congratulates you but no one knows how many times you've been f*cked." Just stay consistent, you'll be successful, I promise you that.
Working in hospitality industry for a decade now,i can tell right away if a person is old money or new money or just pretenting to be one.. The old money people will be nice, polite , respectful and considerate but the other's will treat everyone like shit.. and besides I've never seen a young woman from old money family dressing up like a cheap slut with pounds of make up,fake nails, hairs, boobs or ass or fake everything....their simplicity and elegance and confidence is really admirable.
You and me both. Upper class old money is very downton abbey, The British royal family. Nouveau riche is Kim Kardashian, Donald trump and entertainers 😂
@@KINGCABA-if4nk I wouldn’t really think Kim Kardashians acts like new money outside of her social media presence, her house is very subdued and not what people usually think looks like a very expensive house.
ANSWER: Well, apart from the physical aspects within a family heritage, and perhaps very formal royalty, I believe nothing should truly scream old money. However, in between the lines there's always subtle signs, most people just don't notice.. e.g. a signature style from a certain designer-taylor, when most people are searching for a big brand.. or a generational tradition of buying the same car for decades based on family ties to brand.. ☆☆☆☆☆ star content.. considering membership.
I hope you also do a video on the Olsen Sisters. They might be new money but certainly don't think or act like one. They're more old money than people like Paris Hilton in terms of taste, mindset, style, and personality. I see you've been doing "Things You Don't Know About..." videos on successful designers. I hope you consider adding Mary-Kate and Ashley to the list! I just admire those women and their knack for things intrigue me. How come they're so educated and elegant despite not coming from a certain background or a rich family? Anyway, thanks for making videos like this! You always deliver.
What screams old money? Knowing what your last name means. My grandpas were old money but a bad handling of money left them a little broke(they were middle class when I was born) and my old aunt(Grand-aunt) always ask for everybody's last name and would be like "My lastname is BLeBle" my family : ""From the BleBles of x location?"(sorry for the bad english if any)
I have “old money” however I go to a public grammar school with people that aren’t even middle class, I refused to go to a private school when I was choosing what school to join. I regret saying no to my dad
Stay as you are, maintain your manners, style and health. Always look sharp, I take after my grandfather and wear shirts, jumpers and trousers. Study hard to get into russell group uni. There you’ll meet like minded people with good manners and privately educated backgrounds. Of course you’ll know to avoid the brash adolescent behaving students but network extensively, remember you become who you surround yourself with, get into the right crowd at school and university, and you’ll have friendships and connections set for life. Best of luck for the future my friend!
I come from an “Old Money” family, although I’m not super wealthy I do own my own farm, thanks to help from a family member who was a department store executive. I used to be her PA, and it was a rather different World! One of her fellow executives flew a private plane for fun on the weekends, and we would go to a private winery for the day when she needed to restock her wine collection. My own friends also tend to be from old money families, but usually I don’t find out about it until we get talking. None of us is into ostentatious displays of wealth, but somehow we all manage to do what we do, and we never starve!
Old money is not as rich as portrayed in this video. Very often the reason for old clothes, old cars is cash poverty, real estate wealth. The real estate literally sucks out all their money with repairs, and the older the money the more this is the case.
I guess what you are talking about is how middle class Americans perceive what old money is supposed to live and look like. It's very different in Europe and Asia. If you want to look like one , do these things. Please have impeccable manners. Do speak slowly, eloquently and enunciate. Learn to speak at least one European or Asian language. Treat everyone from door men to the aristocrats with respect. Have clear skin, cut your nails, trim your hair nose hair and facial hair. Look well groomed. Do not use profanity. Do not wear branded items. If you must, wear those with very small or no logo. Learn to smile. Don't do small talk if possible. Your body language is very important. Learn to pair right wine with right dishes. Learn dinner etiquette. Don't brag. Don't talk about money. Learn and understand various foreign cultures. Visit exotic places not popular places. Never treat anyone as if they were beneath you. Don't complain about their lack of hygiene standards or criticise their food or culture when visiting exotic places. Be kind to less fortunate people. Racism is an absolute no-no. Make sure your clothes are clean, fit you well and ironed. Straight clean teeth also help. Many more to pull it off but that's it for now. Old money is not about money more about proper upbringing.
McLean, Virginia is old money, Potomac, Md is new money. New residents of Potomac make the mistake of having their children dropped off at school in a limousine. I’ll never forget watching Dan Snyder jump out of his limousine parked in front of the Giant food and run inside for who knows just what. Contrast McLean where Rose Kennedy drove a dated American car, think it was a Plymouth. Sad that now even McLean has new IT money so you see more brand new $100,000 plus shiny cars.
Be happy with what you got. Dont aspire to be the most trendy. Learn from the past and look to the furniture. Think 3 steps forward, what if .... Dont get stressed too much. 🤗
This is maybe true for America as it’s only existed for five minutes. But Catherine Tates character is not old money it’s basically just middle class with pretensions. In England at least old money isn’t concerned with things like extra virgin olive oil and northern nannies. This is an affectation of the suburban middle classes.
Most 'old money' families no longer have money. In fact, there is a name for it - it's called 'genteel poverty'. So, you have the aesthetic, but no money? You're in good company.
Another great video! Thank you so much. People forget that generational wealth started with someone in their bloodline who decided to stop being a victim of circumstances and busted his ass (yeah, it usually is a man who did), and created with discipline and focus, a life that his offspring would enjoy, even if he wouldn't see it in fruition.
Having old money means exchanging cash for assets that can be turned back into cash. Old money doesn’t spend any. They just exchange it among themselves for assets. They buy their clothes from the same shop where their parents shopped. Their jewelry is all heirlooms from the family and each piece has a history. Money doesn’t leave their circle. They wouldn’t dream of going to the mall.
I am not old mney but by dad was a naval lieutenant commander in the Navy. Good manners were everything. Sending food back or complaining was the height of rudeness
Of course new people would be excited about it, they've never had that kind of wealth before. I think people who are able to maintain their families wealth in subsequent generations and make even more through legal means are respectable but people who come from nothing and make their money from nothing legally is even more respectable.
The most obnoxious thing I hate that new money does is the announcement and blatant branding of themselves with all those high end labels. All of Real Housewives and these rappers covered in LV and Gucci, the logo Balenciaga smack dab on their forehead, all over their shirt. "What are you wearing today, is that Tom Ford? It's Givenchy, actually 😌" I can't be ruining my Margiela, my Jimmy Choo", "Let me grab my Chanel bag", "Versace, Versace, Versace". 🙄🙄🙄 ughh it's just so tacky and screaming for validation!
One thing I have always noticed is a lady's jewelry. Old money usually wears beautiful classic pieces, simple earrings and pearls. The exception is usually a huge diamond engagement ring passed down through the generations of course.
Investing in the right things matter, I have actually invested in the stock market and crypto market trust me crypto trading is more profitable than stock investment.
Yeah that's right I think the best way is to invest with a professional, at least it saves the trauma of too many losses, I have been trading with the aid of Angela Robinette and I have been making nice profits.
You can tell a lot about people, by the way they treat the ones who wait on them, hand and foot. I am #15. I never send anything back to the cook. If they don't do it right, I simply do NOT go back to that restaurant anymore.
Old money from the US, significant time in Europe unrelated to business. Particularly time spent in the Greek islands. Knowledge of culture, antiquities, symphonic music and opera.
Are you not updated that hunting has been scratched off the list of old money sports in so many countries? You gotta socialize with the newer generation I guess
Some of the things also seem to come out of a need, a person with new money, can choose to be humble or brag about their achievements, a celebrity like the mma professional or movie actor shown will make more money in future if they are in the light of media and public. While if a new kid on the block shouts old money, people will be curious to know where it came from? I myself don't really respect nepotism, handout etc, so if i come to know an individual between self-made and rich-daddy, obviously i respect the self made person more. One more reason, i think some of the old money people hide their vacation, spending and other stuff is, they are in some businesses where maybe once some one used to add value or held a position of power/leadership, and they are now gone away but their structure still remains in some "rent-seeking" way, this is usually in some form middle man(say can today be replaced with an app), honorary position or bribes or money from a foundation they run while holding military or govt positions etc. If they start drawing attention, it can open a can of worm, so they are very subtle about it. Of course, as always not all are bad not all good, just some more than others.
Hmmm. It`s clear. New money - is a BIG money, old money - is a SMALL money. New money are self-made people, old money are grandson/granddaughter of self-made man.
Good and vast networking with those in powers across the country and rest of the world. With trusted networks, they able to get deals not usually offered to public.
When people don't need to struggle for every penny for generations, they have the time for education, nice hobbies and charity. Something must be filling their time while the others are busy surviving. Hence those aesthetics. However, their circles are full of idle and rotten kids who grow up to be princes andrews (in case they survive their young years).
I find that you can know 1 language like English and Spanish and know different dialects from different countries, counting like a different language, which the romantic languages are similar like French Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and mix with Eng are understandable
Old money rules. Indeed. We don't have to show off. I think that wearing quality sweats to run errands (heck, EVERYONE has to, at some point), but, obviously, not looking like a hobo, is absolutely old money. I HATE big logos of ANYTHING emblazoned upon my clothes. Yuck. Gross. I enjoy my fine dining, and NEVER, EVER send ANYTHING back! Nasty, lol! I live in a quality neighborhood, that is definitely out of the way. My car is not ostentatious, and I don't desire one. In terms of travel, my exclusivity is with a program that is not easy to obtain by the majority of people on the planet, and I definitely like it that way. New money drives me nuts, lol.
Let's worry about making some cash to become new money before we worry about becoming old money shall we. Most of us will become old long before we get be be new money.
Old money whispers world politics. World Politics including decisions made by burecrats. Also about wars that makes money. The third and most important is business deals like buying or selling land.
