Today we have another Croatian culture vlog for you! I'm going to walk you through about 15 things that every Croatian household, probably has. The perfect place to show you all, is at my inlaws' house. They're both pretty traditional Croats, so they're sure to have everything on the list.

Get from Amazon:
NAPOLITANKE - amzn.to/3jmPZvb
DOMACICA - amzn.to/3pXdmh9
DZEZVA (COFFEE POT) - amzn.to/2MDl15R
VEGETA (this one is the healthier one) - amzn.to/3pVXHiq
1. Slippers - you must have several pairs of slippers, some for those who live in the house, and others for the guests. There are 2 different kinds, the one with the rubber sole, and the knitted kind, which are handmade. Sometimes Croatian people wear both kinds together for some extra protection from the cold.
2. Rakija - every Croatian home has to have some rakija. It can be homemade or store bought, but it's essential. There are so many uses for it. You can use it to welcome people to your home with a shot, to reduce a fever, to clean a cut, there are endless uses! Usually there will be two kinds. One harder/stronger rakija typically for men, and a sweeter rakija typically more for women.
3. Crucifix - About 90% of Croatians are Catholic, so it’s very common for a Cross or Crucifix to be hanging in the house. Usually there will be several of them in any traditional home.
4. Blessing stickers - once a year, the priest comes and blesses the house, then he leaves a sticker to put in your doorway. These stickers represent protectors of the house.
5. Vegeta - you’re sure to find Vegeta in every Croatian home! It’s a great veggie-all-purpose seasoning that really is put in a lot of different dishes. Baka uses it in stews, soups, bbq meals, and many other dishes. It’s a delicious seasoning and is easily added to anything!
6. Spek - spek is also a staple in any Croatian home. It’s common to have a big chunk of bacon like the one shown. Croats cut it up for a snack, they put it in several different dishes, they serve it to guests, it would be strange for Croatians to not have a chunk of bacon in their fridges.
7. Coffee pots - there must be at least 2 or 3 little coffee pots, because you can’t make 2 cups of coffee in a 6 cup pot, or 4 cups of coffee in a six cup pot. The pots are called a “dzezva”and they are used to make Turkish coffee, which is the most popular way of making coffee here in Croatia.
8. Catholic calendar - another thing that most Croatian households have is this calendar showing all of the holidays and name days. Most names have their own day of the year, and you kind of celebrate that person whose name it is. Croatia has many more holidays than we do back in Canada, so you really need a calendar like this to keep track of them all.
9. Lace decor - there will typically be some kind of lace decor in a Croatian home (like on a coffee table, a tv stand, or just on your dinner table). Lace is a very traditional handicraft here in Croatia, and it’s especially famous from the Island of Pag.
10. Mercury thermometers - many traditional Croats prefer the old-school thermometers, and believe they give a more reliable result. The newer ones are faster, but aren’t as trustworthy, according to my mother-in-law.
11. Rosehip tea - It’s very common to find some of this tea in a Croatian home. Baka says it’s great for the cold and flu season, it has a lot of vitamin C, and it’s like a nice healing drink if you’re feeling sick. She assures me that most homes do in fact have this tea!
12. Rosehip jam - Along with the tea, it’s typical for Croatians to have some rosehip jam. It’s most commonly used to spread on their thin pancakes called palacinke, but it’s definitely the most popular jam flavor in Croatia.
13. Boxes of cookies - in any Croatian pantry, you’re sure to find a few boxes of cookies, just in case some guests pop over unannounced (or with short notice), and Baka hasn’t prepared any kind of cake or cookies. She always keeps some Napolitanke or some Domacice on hand to serve to guests with coffee.
14. Vuteks blankets - these blankets were made in Vukovar by a company called Vuteks. I’m pretty sure you’ll find them in every single Croatian home. They’re the best blankets ever, so warm, cozy, comfortable and they just don’t wear down. You obviously can’t buy them anymore, but they last and last, so most Croatians still have some in their homes. Baka’s blankets are about 40 years old, and there’s not a rip, tear, or hole in any of them. Excellent quality!
15. Croatian checkers - you’ll most likely find some kind of Croatian checkers in any Croatian home. It can be a jersey, a hat, a scarf, as long as it’s showing support for some kind of Croatian sports team.

Very interesting! I live with my Australian born Croatian partner and his dad lives with us, watching your videos has given me some sense as to why he does certain things. I don’t really feel the cold much and in winter, sometimes I’m barefoot and he tells me off 😂 We definitely have vegeta in our house, lots of biscuits, but no lace decor. We do have the Croatian flag hanging in our loungeroom and Dida has shirts and hats with the famous checkers! When my brother in law and sister in law come over every week for dinner, they have their own slippers here too. Haven’t heard of the draft thing though.

I am Albanian and I can relate to a lot of things in the video: coffee pots (xhezve) thermometer, blankets, slippers, extra cookies for guests, rakija, calendar. I think Balkan countries have the same traditions.

yes, this applies to most Balkan countries. We have very similar and even intermixed cultures. This is why I say Hungarians, Albanians and Romanians are honorary Slavs.

Dear Sarah, Hi, I'm a new subscriber. Your Croatian is amazing. The language is difficult even for many Croats. Never stop patting yourself on the back for that. And your family is adorable, I love how they all support what you do. I'd just edit the title of this a tiny bit because this applies more to TRADITIONAL homes. Older people, rural areas, etc. The population is 90% Catholic only on paper. In recent years, more and more people stray away from the Church and live in more modern homes, so you won't find crucifixes and stickers with saints in every home and the calendars/namedays aren't a huge thing either. I can't wait to see what you do next and thanks for loving our homeland as your own (I mean, it IS your homeland now too lol).

I'm loving this channel. My mom moved to Canada when she was 14, and married a Canadian guy. As such, I didn't have much exposure to Croatian culture, growing up - as my mom attempted to assimilate into Canadian culture as much as possible. Anyway, I'm finding your channel heartwarming. Keep up the great work!

@@RoyalCroatianTours my mother popped in for a visit, yesterday; we had some pivo, vino, and snacks as we typically do at some point during the weekend. I took the opportunity to show her a couple of your videos, and she was tickled pink. She was floored at how good your command of the Croatian language is: "Wow! Her Croatian is way better than mine!" She had a smile on her face the whole time, and she said that you guys have a beautiful family. The first clip that I showed was the Sunday dinner at the in-laws. Thanks for making her day, and most likely her week! It was definitely a trip down memory lane for her :)

Thank you for sharing this. I love Croatia and cannot wait to visit again (after Covid). I am living in Greece and most of these items are also found in a Greek household.Tip: if your coffee pots have a narrowd brim, the coffee will have a nice foam on it. We call the Turkish coffee Greek coffee... but neither is correct because it is actually of Arab origin. Pleased to see all your video's and so good to see your MIL is participating.

Thank you for making this video. It feels like walking through my parent’s house. The thing with those blankets, they really are the warmest. I remember buying some nicer looking ones at Indigo in Canada and they function was almost cosmetic, so I went back to the old-school ones. They don’t match anything in my house, but when I’m cold, I know what does the job.

Thanks so much! Yes I know - that's the only problem with the blankets - the colour/style. lol I'm sure they were super stylish back in the day, but unfortunately they don't really go with a more modern home design. It doesn't even matter though...they're worth keeping around anyway! They can't be beat!

Your Špek 🥓 has a lot of meat to it. Most of the Špek I come across has about a minimum of 90% fat, including the Špek I have in my fridge right now. As an Englishman who lives alone in Croatia, and rarely has visitors, I still have most of your list in my flat, including the four cup džezva - I know my measurements. Interestingly, Turkish coffee is not actually Turkish but Bosnian. The Turks 'cook' their coffee by putting the grinds in the pot before the water and heat the water and grinds at the same time, as you see Americans do in cowboy films. The technique of boiling the water first, then adding the coffee grinds to the freshly boiled water, then reboiling the water was developed in Bosnia. (Just an interesting fact about a misnamed technique.) I would say that you forgot honey. I don't think I've been in a Croatian home that didn't have honey. And most have homemade honey given by or bought from a friend, or friend of a friend. Honey, especially sweet 'blossom' honey goes perfectly with čaj od Šipka (Rosehip tea), and increases the antiviral effects of the rosehip tea.
