I've been watching financial/minimalist RU-vidrs for over a year now. And at some point I stopped getting new information; most of the videos repeat the same thing. But Augustine still manages to surprise me with fresh and bold ideas.
haha, I'm trying my best! You have to get really creative to constantly be thinking of new topics! I get bored when I'm not learning anything when making them. For the very least, I try to pack them with jokes on certain topics!
I totally agree as I have the same experience. Which is why I mainly watch his videos. Other youtubers just say the same ideas in different uploads as if we haven't heard that from them before.
They are "fabric softener" sheets. They soften your clothes as well as fight static cling. 2 tbsp of white vinegar in the rinse cycle of your washing machine, accomplishes the same thing and makes your clothes brighter. No smell at all.
Yeah, another reason why I don't use fabric softener or vinegar during a rinse cycle or whatever is because I don't like having to rush back-and-forth to the washing machine. I only go back to the washing machine when I'm washing whites to add the bleach once the washer is filled with water.
I use dryer sheets ONLY when I'm drying items made from synthetic fabrics which get all staticky in the dryer. Otherwise, I agree, they are not necessary. I use white vinegar instead of fabric softener in the washer and clothes come out fresh and clean. Now about storage units: they are useful for storing a son's belongings while he's deployed in the military and in-between homes. They are useful for storing a deceased family members belongings until the grief subsides and you feel ready to deal with the belongings. They are useful for storing a family's belongings while living in a hotel or apartment until you find just the right home to live in permanently. A storage unit is useful for temporary situations, but shouldn't be used just because you have too much to fit in your permanent home.
Managing money is different from accumulating wealth, and the lack of investment education in schools may explain why people struggle to maintain their financial gains. The examples you provided are relevant, and I personally benefited from the market crisis, as I embrace challenging times while others tend to avoid them. Well, at least my advisor does too, jokingly.
Investors should exercise caution with their exposure and exercise caution when considering new investments, particularly during periods of inflation. It is advisable to seek guidance from a professional or trusted advisor in order to navigate this recession and achieve potential high yields.
This is superb! Information, as a noob it gets quite difficult to handle all of this and staying informed is a major cause, how do you go about this are you a pro investor?
Due to my demanding job, I lack the time to thoroughly assess my investments and analyze individual stocks. Consequently, for the past seven years, I have enlisted the services of a fiduciary who actively manages my portfolio to adapt to the current market conditions. This strategy has allowed me to navigate the financial landscape successfully, making informed decisions on when to buy and sell. Perhaps you should consider a similar approach.
My CFA ’Melissa Terri Swayne’ , a renowned figure in her line of work. I recommend researching her credentials further. She has many years of experience and is a valuable resource for anyone looking to navigate the financial market.
These videos are so motivating. I have a habit of wasting money on minimum wage - 4 credit cards, junk food, cheap clothes - I even bought a car for $12k on finance a couple months ago spur of the moment 😭 I owe around $23k in total. A couple weeks ago I decided enough is enough and I started planning and making spreadsheets/budgets. I’ve only had 2 paydays (fortnight) since I decided to start being more frugal and managing money better and I was excited when last week I had $50 left at the end instead of $-100. This is the first time in a LONG time this has happened. Years. I cant wait to see how much I can put away at the end of this pay cycle (got paid yesterday and everything’s paid, but I’ll never believe how much is left until the NEXT payday!)
Thanks guys! I am pleased to say I haven't lost motivation yet, long ways to go but I have paid off the smallest credit card already and am tackling the next smallest one now, so still quietly trucking along! ❤
I totally agree with all these, but you got me with going into the gas station, this 60 yr. Old loves her slurpies, but in hawaii most of the machines are broken, so avoid the disappointment and not go in and I don’t need them anyway. Also this falls into giving up soda lol
Hey youngster, I “Is” a baby boomer watching your video on an iPad that I bought in 2014 and I work on an 2014 iMac. Both are still going strong after 10 years! I bought my own router and even set up my own internet! Now, my 86 year old dad, bless his heart, is often flummoxed about his cable service and his computer. So he calls me and I help him. . . lol sort of teasing you but all the above is true!
Wow awesome to see that someone has figured out that sometimes buying the expensive product is actually cheeper in the end. See in 10 years you’ve bought 1 computer. If it had been a $300-$400 windows laptop I bet you would have bought 3 or more of them in that same time period. 😊I’ll gladly pay the apple premium for higher quality and a better user experience and then learn how to upgrade or repair things using third party ram hard drives etc for a fraction of apples upgrade price.
Seniors, check Seniors centers for free Aarp tax preparation. They are retired tax professionals. Call early and make a appointment. If one is filled up check other local towns. Its for low income too. Never had a problem and been during this for years. You don't have to belong to AARP.
Baby boomer here. I spent my career developing software… the latest working to make text-to-911 possible. I never rented a modem. It’s much cheaper to buy one. Dryer sheets are fabric softener for the dryer. I absolutely hate the smell. I use woolen balls. They accelerate drying and basically have the same effect as dryer sheets without the stink. I’ve always gone with credit unions instead of banks, because there are no fees. No storage unit for me.
I'm in an apartment complex that requires us to purchase a Spectrum technology package. It is not optional and added to our monthly rent at $110 a month. I don't even need, want, or use the services. I didn't know about this before I signed the lease unfortunately. Honestly it feels like I'm being robbed of my hard earned money
How could you not know Spectrum was required before you signed the lease? You read it, right? Something is not right here. Maybe contact the housing authority in your area for assistance.
@@juliemarkham4332 it was not listed on the website as a required thing, only "wi fi and cable ready." When I originally talked with the leasing office, it was not mentioned either. They only declared the fees for the background check, the credit check, and the deposit. They didn't even tell me the deposit could only be a money order either until an hour before my lease signing. I've always put large expenses on a credit card or paid cash. When I got to the leasing office, that's when they presented the full breakdown of the costs. Only the "base" cost of the apartment was presented on the website but was actually much more per month. There is also a mandatory $10 parking fee per month per car & a $28 mandatory trash pickup fee, also not disclosed as "required" prior to the lease signing (only as available amenities). Dumpsters are easily accessible all over & I could easily handle my own trash for free. So you think you're paying one price but are blindsided at the lease signing. They will not let you opt out of the technology package or the trash service. By this time I already had well over $1,000 invested in procuring the apartment, so I was basically stuck
I own a condo, and cable is included in my HOA fees. Apparently, the cable company and the developer entered into some foreever contract when the complex was built.
Unfortunately it’s becoming an all to common occurrence where a developer turns to a utility provider to install the utility for FREE during the build, but it locks the tenant/ home owner into that service provider for the next 10-15 yrs, if not any longer… 😮
You're adorable! Have got around 20 years on you and wish i knew this stuff when i was younger. Thankfully saw the light and paid off debt like student loan and credit cards and trimmed the fat like subscriptions, eating out and all that. My simple dialed down lifestyle may seem dull as dishwater to some I know, but worth it for cutting stress and the need to work long hours.
I’m a boomer 64. Cut cable back in 2004. Internet and you tube for entertainment and library for free rented videos at the time only this recently subscribed to Netflix . Owned cable modem forever monthly fees are horrible. I wanted a financial advisor when I was young 20’s and starting out with 10k and had no idea about investments. They basically laughed at me, seriously, and said come back when you have like 100k. Well I went to the library self educated. Now with 7 digit portfolio they come after me. And I tell them now I don’t need you. Funny right when I needed them they said f#*k off. Now they need commission from me and I surely don’t need them I’m not that ignorant to come out and say f#*k off but I sure think it. Lots of good points here but not all baby boomers are out of touch stupid old physically and mentally dolts. As a matter of fact I’m only public school educated but had to teach my college educated kids how the stock market even works and what it is 😂. Even college educated they learned ZERO. Ones a chemical engineer type (son)and the other a glorified secretary degree ( daughter) . But sad they went to college to earn more money and get a better job but came out not having a clue what to do with their big bucks
@@RickMartinRU-vid yes agree for people who don’t have a good size portfolio to enjoy it’s almost a necessity to wait until 70. For myself and I choose it myself I’m enjoying s.s. Now not waiting if I waited until 70 to even start collecting I’d be 75 before it even made sense. And I wanna enjoy as much free cash that’s in excess anyway to live a fun life while I’m still healthy and not all crippled up with arthritis just to say one fine day I’ll have extra money from social security to put in my bank account to leave more for my heirs. In my case that would be foolish coz I knew my excess monthly money I’d get and still have plenty every year to still donate and invest because I can’t spend it all. Coz I’m so content in my life thanks be to God. I knew my number and I don’t care if my neighbor or family member has 10x more than me. It just doesn’t matter. I would agree that young people who know zero about investing and don’t have a mom or dad to teach them then they need a fee based only financial planner as you mentioned as long as they can show proof of being a fiduciary.
Totally agree with you on most of these things. In defense of Apple, even though something like a Macbook Air at $1500 seems expensive, they last a long time and provide an excellent user experience. When I went with cheaper PC laptops I would replace them every 2-3 years. My previous Macbook Pro I used from 2013 to 2021 and it still works fine. My old Dell and HP laptops would never get close to that kind of longevity. Also, you can get Apple refurbs at a very reasonable price. I don't like the Apple snobbery, like looking down on people with Android phones, but I also do enjoy the user experience of their computers far above what you get from cheap PC laptops.
In defense of Apple as well, the built in security is a huge positive . I don't have Apple for my personal phone but I do for my work phone. I will make the switch when the time comes. I have had too many data breeches on my Android.
The problem with Apple is you can't upgrade to the latest os. No matter if it meets the requirements. They go by the year it is. On the PC, the year it is is not an issue. You need to buy a quality PC rather than those $300 ones. That's why you keep replacing every 3 years. And you don't need to pay $1500 for a laptop. You can spend half of that for a PC that will last just as long. I had my desktop PC since 2014. And paid $500 for it then.
@@fueledbymusic3if you look back you can upgrade most/all Macs to the latest OS version for maybe 5-7 years or so. And after that you will most likely get security updates for 1-2 years at least. And after that, all or most apps will work with the OS version that you're using. You don't truly need the exactly latest OS version. And then it's maybe time for buying a new Mac anyway, or a PC? A worse problem with Macs is that you cannot upgrade RAM when you've bought your machine. You're stuck with that 8 GB RAM forever, or 16 GB or more depending on the configuration that you choosed so choose wisely! PC and Mac are different. There's only a few Mac models and Apple wanna sell new hardware and they can do it if they "force" us to upgrade. For PC you got Microsoft that will get most money from Windows. And there's a possibility that "your PC" will be supported by future Windows longer than if you bought a Mac. But you can use most Macs for 10+ years, it's a very minor problem. I don't defend either Mac or PC. Just being realistic. Both worlds got their advantages. If you want a gaming PC you should avoid Mac and go for a good gaming PC. Just look at the gaming PCs that many Twitch streamers are using... and there's other configuations for your needs. Macs are not built in the same way as PCs. And there's almost impossible to buy a new Mac for less than 1000 dollar. I know about Mac mini sub-1000 dollar but it's so little RAM and SSD for sub-1000 dollar and also no keyboard and no mouse... and even if you're sub-1000 you're close to 1000! And I don't defend Apple by having only 8 GB RAM and you cannot even upgrade it. It's a "RAM scam". Pick at least 16 GB RAM for any Mac! You have to accept Apple's (current) business model. Until 2012 you could upgrade RAM for all Macs, that was great! It's just so sad that you cannot do that anymore. Also sad about the internal storage and I don't defend that, but at least you can add external storage. Apple's business model is to make huge profits from the RAM/SSD upgrades for their latest Macs. That's why the base models are so underpowered with mainly 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD. This will probably work great for a few customers but not all...
Having both used Apple and non Apple devices over the years my experience is that Apple products required less futzing around with to do what I need to do. Feels like their newer OS software also supports older hardware so you can make devices last longer. That makes it worth it for me. I also buy refurbished which helps. I think the ultimate frugal approach would be Linux, but a lot of the pro audio software I use for work is not supported there….
“Rental car insurance” is 2 things: collision and/or liability. Your credit card ONLY covers collision damage to the rental car! If you are at fault for damages to someone else’s car/property/body… you have NO protection unless your own personal auto insurance includes rental car liability coverage. If you crash that rental car thinking your credit card’s got your back, wrong! Without liability or what’s usually called “supplemental insurance” to compliment collision coverage on your card or purchased from the rental agency, they will sue you for every last penny. And that… is not frugal.
Loved this video Austin! I have been an Apple product user since 2011, but I'm under no illusions that they're a great company. I cannot believe they charge hundreds of dollars to upgrade ram or SSD space on Macs. I always go for a sub-$1000 used model, and since they started putting out the M-chip computers, the Air and Mac Mini are great performance for their value. They smoke every PC in the same price brackets.
I was forced to buy a bottle of water somewhere other than Dollar Tree….the gas station. Had my twenty at the ready….two bottles $1.50. Good savings….even better when water is $5 ($4.75) at the movie theater. Only time I buy bottles of water.
I have unlimited mint mobile data but no home internet. Still only $30 /month. I don't have cable or streaming services so all my entertainment comes from the library or internet on my phone.
i bought a modem once and it broke not even 6 months later lol. so I decided not just rent one cause I didnt want to keep wasting money buying them if they werent gonna last long.
I agree on most of them until cable tv, I watch wrestling like WWE and AEW and I can only do that using cable tv if I want to watch their live shows so thats the only thing in this list that I waste my money. Great video By the way.
The individual hummus cups are cheaper than the tubs of hummus at Target. It befuddles me every time because this goes against the way we are ripped off in every other instance. Great advice!
When I was living in Ecuador in markets, sometimes when you bought fruits, you got a worse deal if you bought more. Like you could get 4 avocados for $1 or 6 avocados for $2. I accidentally bought the $2 plate until I realized, "That doesn't make any sense."
I'm not a financial advisor, but I want to clarify that financial advisors can charge in two different ways - through commission (bad!) or through an hourly rate (good!). Some people are just not good with money, period. Those people might need help with managing an inheiritence or getting out of debt or taxes or insurance. And in a lot of those cases, they SAVE you money. If you need help, always use a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) as they have gone through a very tough exam (think CPA) to ensure their competency. Just my two cents. Otherwise, I completely agree with you Augustine!
Here in the UK as far as I aware you can only get on line via an internet company who provides the router, and of course charge a line fee. Am I correct? Anyone
I was just asking myself the same question. Am from the UK but have a hair salon in Mexico and it grieves me to pay the internet company monthly which is double of what you would pay in the UK.
@@estefaniacastillo133 Thankyou for that response. The UK has become so very expensive and all the utilities have gone up in price. God knows what my electric bill will be after this winter. Maybe Mexico is warmer!😃
@@richjohn11 i agree its pure insanity what they are doing over there to the people. UK needs a revolution to take down the greedy elites and politicians in power that intentionally keep penalising the british people. Thats why i left it makes me angry the whole set up and how they are able to get away with it.
Excuse me Mr. But chevron is the only place I can find White Snickers candy bar and I should not be eating candy at all so buying it from Amazon for $40 is kind of silly.😅
I'm so happy I made productive decisions about my finances that changed forever. I'm a single mother living in Vancouver Canada, bought my first house in October and hoping to retire soon if things keep going smoothly for me.
Everyone needs more than their salary to be financial stable. The best thing to do with your money is to invest it rightly, because money left for saving always end up used with no returns.
Am looking for something to venture into on a short term basis, I really need to create an alternate source of income, what do you think I should be buying?
I save so much money living in a walkable city with good public transportation. A public transport ticket is 30 euros a month in Vienna, Austria and there's really no need for a car in the city. I dont have a dryer either, which keeps energy costs way down and gives my clothes a longer life span. On the other hand, taxes and the cost of services are pretty high.
I'm not sure where you're getting your Doritos, but here in Central KY, a Party size bag of Doritos is 6.79 regular price. We stopped buying them unless they are on sale with the buy 5 or more sale that makes them 2.99. We load up enough to get us through to the next quarter ( like 15 bags because I have a teen and we go through ATLEAST 1 bag a week) and then refuse to buy anymore until they go back on sale.
Well, I think you just insulted most baby boomers out there. (No I'm not one). There's no need to be condescending or rude with your info. Some baby boomers over 80 dont have a clue how to use Roku and cable is much simpler to use for them. ( We don't have it.) Dryer sheets reduce static cling, soften your clothes and make them smell fresher. If you prefer clingy clothes, don't use them. Most points I agree with, but I suggest you dont be a rude "smart Alec" about it. No one likes being made to feel stupid or talked down to. You catch more flies with honey. I'm unsubscribing. 😢
I don't understand the whole cable fascination and I'm a boomer. I got rid of my landline in 2002 and got rid of my tv and cable in 2004. If I want to watch something online is simply the way to go. Think of all the money I've saved over two decades. As for storage units? Nope! Never had them. Never will. I started down the road to minimalism in 2008. Love my life with no need for storage units. I own exactly what I love, need and use.
Oh my goodness your baby boomer generalisations are way off the mark. I'm a BB and I don't do anything you mentioned. And none of my BB friends or family do either. Maybe it's just American boomers that are living in the past.

Apple products work better and at least for me last a very long time. Only upgraded lap top after 10 yrs of using a mac book air to my bmp now. I’ve had it for nearly 4 yrs and plan to keep it for as long as I can which at a minimum will be 6 more years.
Regarding the single serving product, I used to think it was always better to buy the option where the cost per mass or volume was less, but there are cases like when you do not consume much of the item, the item is perishable, you are trying it out, etc. where it is better to just buy the one where you are paying less at the moment even if the cost per amount is more. This change in mindset, ir at least analyzing each case particularily, has actually helped me be more intentional and save money. Just sharing this perspective in case anyone needs it.
I have had many opened large jars of apple sauce with that lovely furry dark mold in it. I do buy the small containers and it stays in the back of the fridge until I throw it out…
It is hysterical how you group all baby boomers like some of them are not attorneys and politicians and doctors and scientists and computer technicians.
Do you already use fabric softener in your wash? I'm asking because I don't use fabric softener in my wash and use the dryer sheets instead of fabric softener.
Dryer sheets soften your clothes, make them smell nice, and reduce static. They do actually have a purpose. You can use liquid fabric softner in the washer instead. If you ever feel ungrateful for modern conveniences, go without a clothes dryer for several years. Please be advised that in certain places your credit card benefits may not cover rental cars. Ireland is one of those places. DO buy the rental car coverage there.
I haven't had a washer/dryer since I've been living in a studio apartment for years. It is SO annoying! That is the first thing I'm getting if I ever can move out of here! I have friends who complain about doing laundry and just roll my eyes because I guarantee that their situation more convenient than going to a laundromat! haha
Great video. I haven't had cable in over 8 years. Not much of a tv watcher. Others in the house may watch Netflix and that's it. I will comment on the modem rental from the internet provider. I'm a tech of 30 years. If you buy one at the store (I did), your internet co. will not guarantee internet speeds you are paying them for. They will not assist you over the phone at times if you have issues, since the equipment isn't there's. Also, modems will become outdated and you will need to buy one every few years. If you rent, it's almost the same price, and they will need to replace it at no charge if there are issues with it. They can also send firmware (updates) to your modem for you when you call them with issues. They cannot send updates to a modem you bought. When this happened to me, and my modem was outdated, I decided to pay the $12 a month instead of dropping $100 on something they won't help you with if there are issues.
Wow,first and last video of yours I watch, well stsrt i stopped it after so many negatives directed at one group of people. Why, so many nasty snide comments towards "baby boomers." Why so snide and condescending? You should not group people together just based on their birth year or in any other way. Perhaps work on building people up instead of trying to tear them down to feel better about yourself. Very sad choice. Perhaps be more open-minded towards others.
Apple products are not a waste if you know how to do good deals. I Have a iphone SE 2020 i bought 2 years ago used for 250 eur. Still great. When it don't get any more updates i will search for a another good deal. I don't need to buy a 1000$ iphone, i just need to grab a good cost efective one. iPhone SEs for me are the best deals.
I watch it from Europe. For the first time in my life I have heard of dryer sheets.. WTF is this? I do not even have a dryer and do not need it. What is the point to pay for an appliance which additionally consumes a lot of electricity! Clothes dry perfectly and fast being hanged .. and for free!
This. I forgot to put a dryer sheet when I washed my comforter. Let’s just say taking it out of the dryer was one of the worst task ever. I recently got a box of Bounce 240 dryer sheet for $5. That box will easily last me 2-3 years depending on how much laundry I have to do (single and live on my own). I’m fine with that cost.
I think everyone should try to go without. I've noticed no difference, besides fragrance. I used to use the unscented anyway. If you notice a difference, use them if you want; but you might be pleasantly surprised and find no difference like me.
I watch almost all your videos (not many RU-vidrs I can say this about), but I've a few issues with this one. Didn't peg you for one of the bash baby boomers type. I'm not a baby boomer (GenX), but I find all the generational fighting kind of silly. Each generation has MILLIONS of people in it and to suggest, jokingly or not, that each of these millions would believe or do certain things simply because they are of the same generation ignores differences in brain wiring, interests, aptitudes and experiences. It's sort of disappointing to see it. As far as the points, I don't do/have most of those including cable, dryer sheets, etc. But I have to agree with some in the comments about the Apple products. I am only on my second MacBook and my last one lasted like 10 years. I don't know about now, but I know none of my friends' laptops lasted nearly that long. I also like how Apple products work together so well. Yes, they have the ecosystem, but I don't feel forced to exist within it. If I found something else I like better that works as well or better, I'd switch, just haven't found any alternative like that. Lastly, I think what people need to be is thoughtful/introspective about what they prefer, what works best for them, etc. I think through (or have thought through at some point) even the smallest choices so I'm making an informed decision about just about everything. Sometimes that leads me to avoiding a product or service altogether and sometimes it leads to me using a product/service even though it costs more because I've deemed it to be worth it, like the Apple products. This is why most of the things you say I agree with, but some are reasonable choices if the individual evaluates it and finds it will be the best choice for them and doesn't just follow others' advice blindly.
Agreed about most points. Factory refurbished or secondhand mint condition Apple devices are more bang for the buck. I’m still using my 2013 MBP and it rocks - mega longevity and quality.
This! I have a refurbished 2015 MacBook Air I spent $600 on that I purchased in 2018. It’s still going strong. I’m also using a 5 yo iPhone XR. The products tend to last if taken care of.
I have a base model iPad I got for 249 on sale. I don’t think I could get an alternative tablet at the same price range that gives me the same performance. What is a waste is probably my Xbox and gaming pc. I hardly use either for their intended purpose.
I do not agree with the statement about Apple. I save money buying a macbook, too many times has a PC died on me or just horrible to use. I find my macbook the best purchase I ever made.
