What are job hours like in Japan, compared to the US or the UK?
@archiemticehurst8086
@archiemticehurst8086 8 лет назад
I know your wanting an answer from Chris but what I've heard, jobs have massive hours due to it having a massive working culture and some people in Japan have 11 hour jobs in the city, with even people laying on the floor of the subways due to exhaustion.

+TacoWrath For English teachers? for the most part (generally) enjoy the silly amounts of free time...
@venomania726
@venomania726 8 лет назад
There are a large number of foreigners in Japan who are not English Teachers. However if you do expect an alternative job you will very likely be required to have N1 level Japanese. As for the hours issue, Richard corrected correctly. As an English Teacher and being a foreigner your hours are very kind, overtime is not expected. In short you're not an 'official' Teacher you're like a guest speaker. So that's nice if you want free time to do something
@ninjajake1225
@ninjajake1225 8 лет назад
+TacoWrath From the people I know who are in the JET program, the amount of free time can range. It depends a lot on your engagement with the school (helping with extracurricular activities/clubs/events - sports festivals - etc etc). Some weeks he has to work some serious overtime, and others he has a little more free time. If you're going for the JET though, it might be best to engage with the students and community as much as possible if you want to extend your contract. You do have the weekends off though, so that's nice. And of course, you do get all of the holiday time off, depending on the school. If we're talking about outside of the JET Program, hours in corporate Japan can be brutal. Not sure if this is true, but I heard that if you fall asleep in the workplace, they accept it because it's a sign of exhaustive work the day before. As for English teaching outside of the JET program, I don't really know. I'd assume it'd be similar to the JET, but with a little more freedom...but I don't know that for sure.

Ahhhh, you went into Death Match at the Golden Gai :D I remember that Yoda, I remember it well :D Nice place though, I don't know if you had the bar tender who has long hair and wears the Wayne's World cap (I can't remember his name but he's a really cool guy :) Quite friendly and I've seen him working there the last two years that I've been. (I assume he owns the place??) Another place I would recommend in the Gai is just opposite Death Match and it's called the Cambiare. It's a small bar themed on the movie Suspiria. I'm friends with one of the bar tenders who works there. It's quite accommodating and friendly for foreigners so it's most definitely worth a look. But yeah, I like the Golden Gai a lot, it's one of my favorite places to frequent when in Tokyo during the night.

Honestly, I don't really know what you'd do in Hiroshima after about 2 days. There's the Peace Park, and Miyajima... and....? I suppose there are some minor things, but I wouldn't have people go longer than 2 full days. And.. honestly if you only have a week I'd probably skip it altogether, as important as the Peace Park is. It's just... really far out. 1 week: Tokyo 4 days, Kyoto 2 days. Osaka or Nara, 1 day. 2 weeks: Tokyo 6 days, Hiroshima 2 days, Kyoto/Osaka/Nara 5 days. 1 day to relax, or put somewhere else

After 3 visits comprising about 7 weeks over 12 years im far from a Japan expert but I have to agree with Osaka being a great city, as is Nagoya. The best experiences we had were just walking the streets and if you see a lot of locals going down a side street, follow them. That is where we found the best things includeing a perfume salesman who loved and knew a lot about NZ near the Ueno station. We also like to go to a destination, like Tokyo Tower and walk back, you will be amazed how much ground you cover and what you find.

Alright, so, first of all, your videos are of the very rare kind of entertaining and engrossing content one would expect to (and should) find more often on the World WIDE Web. Secondly, and here comes the question, how would you set up/organise a line of study for a beginner in Japanese? What books (text books, vocabularies, dictionaries and what not) would you say are compulsory for someone whose goal is to understand intermediate to advanced Japanese? Any websites, better if free of anything that involves picking up your wallet? P.S.: I perfectly know you already made a video based on a similar request some years ago, but let's assume I have all the time needed and not just 6 months P.S.S.:is there any book of Japanese where all, or most, of the grammar is displayed and ordered somehow. For example, look up "The New Penguin Russian Course" on the Internet, and glancing at some pdf you will see what I mean. The best thing is it's not "school focused". Thanks and keep being great!

I think I may have cried with laughter during this video Many thanks for the joys Chris Anywho my question for everday life in Japan would be, is it easy/possible to order/buy vegan food there? I'm a very passionate ethical vegan who also likes travelling and I can't wait to go to Tokyo one day, but I'm aware of how much fish/fish oil is used plus there isn't really even a word for 'vegan' over there either so I'm not sure how I'd cope. Thanks!

+Finding Fay eastern asia isn't a friendly place for people with restricted/specialized diets, in general. You might be able to find restaurants which cater to your needs in major cities.
@pef23
@pef23 8 лет назад
+Finding Fay I have been here for around ten years and have never met any vegan that has been able to stay "ethical" in Japan. Basically your choices are bananas or bananas when on the go. If only in big centers like Tokyo you may be able to eat only at the dozen or so vegan restaurants. Everywhere else they have no idea of what "vegan" is and will very, very likely serve you something with non-vegan ingredients even if they think they are not. If something says "vegetarian" on the menu it may if fact include large chunks of meat. I would suggest staying in private Air BnBs or something and preparing all your own food. There is a traditional style of food called shōjin ryōri. If you can find this somewhere it is a vegan Buddhist style that is also common in Taiwan, but I have never seen it outside of major Buddhist temples like Koya-san. Good luck!

#AskAbroad What 'romantic' encounters have you had in Japan? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) What do you spend your weekends doing? How many close friends have you met in Japan, like Natsuki? Can you give us a tour of Natsuki's barbershop/hairdresser's? What inspired you to start RU-vid? Is the name 'AbroadInJapan' a play on A Broad - As in Chris Broad..In Japan? xD I always thought it was for some reason. Are you into video games? 1v1merust If so, what are the types of video games released in Japan like? More specifically, are there any ways in which they differ from western ones? (Obviously not all video games but some, like rapelay... ._.) After being in Japan for so long, do you feel like you belong there now and did you get used to all the people staring because you're foreign or complimenting your Japanese after you said something so basic as 'sumimasen'? Or is it not AS bad as a lot of RU-vidrs in Japanese make it out to be? (Some I have watched get really pissed off by it o.o) How difficult is it for foreigners to get jobs aside from the JET-type teaching programs? How often do you come back to England, despite David Cameron being PM? (Unless you're conservative then this just got awkward) How tall are you and what is the average height of Japanese people? I want to know if they will think I'm Godzilla or something when I visit, can't be dealing with that. Do you plan on doing any more educational videos like how to sort out housing and moving to Japan etc. type videos for others looking to follow your footsteps? Did I ask too many questions? All jokes aside, thank you for making your videos Chris, they keep me entertained on each upload which are very rewatchable for when I go on ABroadInJapan binges xD I love your content!

+Nico Varley , If so, what are the types of video games released in Japan like? More specifically, are there any ways in which they differ from western ones? (Obviously not all video games but some, like rapelay... ._.) *Sighs* really? people are still remembering the whole Rapelay fiasco that damaged alot oportunities for both non-porn and porn Japanese game to be released outside of Japan because of it? To answer your question , while do Japan do get western games released too , like COD and others , console gaming used to be the norm in Japan while pc games mostly for the small companies that couldnt afford the developer kits for consoles released they game mostly for PC but then Steam and mobile gaming started to get quite big in Japan , the former with their summer sales and also because many store started to sell mid-range gaming PCs therefore making the PC market in Japan getting bigger and then there is android phones and you can make apps and games in Windows/Macs/Linux Computers rather than be forced to have a Mac Computer just to make a fucking app. Japan games are usually RPGs and visual novels (they can be either pornographic ones or not) with a few special case here and there. How difficult is it for foreigners to get jobs aside from the JET-type teaching programs? It depends how much Japanese you know and if you have a degree in something

SYCKODELICUS I mentioned rapelay as a joke haha don't worry, I don't believe that Japan releases stuff like that regularly, it's quite like the rarity of manhunt in the west as an example xD and ooh so they make a majority of JRPG's and VN's then? I really love JRPG's o.o Thank you for the quick answer! Also, so if I have the qualifications and the language (especially specialist terminology for something like molecular biology) I would have similar chances to anyone else?^^

What is TV like in Japan?
@tomosburton1756
@tomosburton1756 8 лет назад
+Legendaryvenomz I can answer that because I watch a lot of live streams of Japanese channels. It's not too different to your average country really. NHK is a bit boring, TV Asahi and TV Tokyo on the other hand make good anime and drama. It is a little bit weird.

@tomosburton1756
@tomosburton1756 8 лет назад
If you go on streamup and type in sherming there's different numbers and each one is a different channel. There's also wjj-jptv which changes channel depending on the programme. If they go down I don't know what I'll do! I would've put a bet on wjj being the one that's more likely to stay being as it mainly just shows variety and dramas.
@BFJP
@BFJP 8 лет назад
+Legendaryvenomz - Commercials, great. News and weather, incredible (provided you speak/read Japanese). Baseball and Jpn sports, also good. Everything else.... so bad - they have a J-celeb panel for virtually everything on talk shows. Anime and some dramas are good.

Also have to agree with you on how Tohoku is so underrated, since living here for about a year now and travelling through most of the mainland, I have always felt Tohoku gives a sense of calmness and peacefullness other places doesn't offer.
