Finally stumbled upon a video that is 1) very informative 2) relatively short but has a core message 3) simple and without any BS. Thank you! Good work!
Hi, Thanks for the knowledge I appricate it very much!! I just found your channel and I'm now going to binge watch your other video's. I very new to graphic design, just about 4 months now, and I'm self taught, started with a free program called Gimp actually I'm actually still using it, I'm learning new things every single day, I will eventually use photoshop and illustrator when I can master Gimp. The only reason I got into graphic design was to design T-shirts for Amazon and a few other "On Demand" t-shirt printing websites. But now I really Love it, the wheels in my head start turning Everytime I see a great design now and I pay way more attention to random designs I see on the street, it may seem weird but somtimes I can go to sleep because I'm thinking about designs. I glad to have found you RU-vid channel, it's good to provide me with great information because I have some catching up to do and it's alot harder to learn things when your 54 years old as opposed to 24 years old. Take care and keep up the great work and the great videos. Hawk out!!
Claudia, I'm so psyched you found me and that you are embarking on such a rewarding new journey at 54. I was a fine art teacher until I was 33 and only started in design then. And I started in the T-shirt industry. I started my own company and after a few other jobs I eventually became the VP of Graphics at Old Navy - who had a $700 million dollar/yr graphic T-shirt business. I used to dream about T-shirt designs! They still hold a very special place in my heart. Go to my website and look at the fashion category to see some of it. Good luck. You've made a great decision.
Philip VanDusen Transparency can be used in corporate world, movie posters, ads, films but other trends got their own limitations is what I feel! That shows the power of Transparency! You are amazing sir! Yourself you are a Moving Library!
I love it how fast the video is and how he does not spend a lot of time on unnecessary talk but right to the point. Tnx for this man. You got yourself a sub :)
emiN, Thanks - that's my goal - not to waste anyones time - give some great value and get it done fast. All my videos are 3-8 minutes and I cram a ton of info into each one. Very little idle chit chat. There are too many people blabbing out there and saying nothing.
Exactly! I have so many friends starting out in design and i will definitely recommend you as a great resource for both new comers and professional designers :) Keep up the good work ! :)
Hello Sir. This is Aseem Sehmi and I'm a graphic designer and working since last 17 years. I videos are really upto point and with instance creative work. Thank you for your efforts to present your views and vast knowledge about designs.
look more like clones made by 10 million people on instagram using ready made filters and apps for idiots with no imagination actually to me.. looks uniform format for the age of 50,000 people posing in yoga pants on instagram pretending to be yoginis and paying for likes trying to become some kind of public personality, and using crappy apps with text boxes to make cheapo shares that all look the same... thats trending for you.. james dean haircuts and beard oil
I wanna see you create this stuff with ready made filters and what do freakin yoga pants have to do with this? Go back to your unsuccessfull channel and cry into your pillow.
Really love the Integration, Playbill, Glitch and as a matter of fact everything... Just stumbled on your channel and i designed 2 banners already with ideas from your vid. Thanks for that, Subscribed!
Sulaimon, That's so cool you have used them already!~ Tell you what, you can do me a favor and share my video with a friend or two? I'm trying to build my subscribers list. ~Peace
I just saw this today and I'm so glad I watched it! Better late than never! Thanks so much for the break down. As a designer, I need this info for my future projects as well.
Carleton, Dont I know it. I wish I could control the ads they run. You'd think there is only one 'graphic design topic' ad on all of freakin' RU-vid, lol.
A lot of these are great and clearly have massive nods to typography trends back in the late 90's. If you look at the Typography Now book series by Rick Poynor you'll see the origins
The first video I saw on your channel and you got me totally in! Instant subscribed! I'm not a designer but there's a lot of insights in here... Keep it rocking!
Giovanni, Thanks for subscribing. I'd be interested to know what is drawing you to my channel - as someone who is not a designer. I seek to appeal to entrepreneurs and businesses interested in branding also - if you are in one of those categories?
Kind of. I'm starting a new venture and design is not one of our strengths. We were looking trends and cool features to decide what to include, and I found your channel with this and much more, like productivity and business development videos. Hope this helps!
I enjoyed the video and will be sharing with my high school graphic design class. Their assignment will be to research a trend and create a design using one or more trends. Thanks for the post.
They all asked for step by step instructions on how to create the graphic trends but I had them research and figure it out. This was so out of the box for a high school class but I did receive some of my best work from them.
I love this! I was skeptical about watching it coz I thought it would be one of those 10 minute clickbait videos that could be summed up in a second but your delivery and sample choices was impeccable. Subscribed obviously.
Abhimanyu, Thanks so much!~ Can you do me a favor as a small thank you? Please share my video with a friend or two! I'm trying to build my subscribers. More to come!
Now I just need to work these into my every day more mundane work. These examples are beautiful but they are million miles away from the type of work I get chance to work on.
Peace and blessings to you and yours. I was wondering, would you happen to know how the graphic at 3:03 is created. It is the one on the bottom, second from the left? Thank you.
Yeah, I know, you're right. The thing about what are generally called "trends" is that they don't really qualify as a "trend" until they show enough mass usage to be classified as such. Some people expect trends to be the newest thing - but in reality they are currently POPULAR things - whether they have been around a short or a long time. I mean look at Russian Constructivism - it's been around 100 years! . Trends are actually about looking BACKWARD not forward. What I suggest people do with trends is use them for inspiration, not for copying. Thanks for the comment!
Can't believe I didn't find your channel earlier. Subscribed - check. Clear, concise, and exceptional visuals that nail the trend concept with absolutely no ambiguity. Wonderfully done!
Not just commented Philip, shared it with my team and asked them to subscribe you. Thank you for putting efforts and sharing a good piece of information in an abbreviated form.
Bill Blais, Thanks so much!~ Can you do me a favor as a small thank you? Please share my video with a friend or two! I'm trying to build my subscribers. More to come!
Thank you! I found this inspiring and helpful because I just started to work with digital art. I'm using GIMP at the moment because I'm a broke art student. 😂 But I am looking forward to trying to learn how to do all of the 15 trends and seeing how they inspire me along the way.
Tech, Thanks man! And good luck with your hacking/torrent channel. It looks cool! The article about this video in DesignTAXI.com this morning has had my inbox blowing up. So "build it and they will come!"
I try to respond to every comment I get, but I have to tell you it's getting a little harder as my channel does better. Today has been a trip after the DesignTAXI article. Lots of comments! I can't say I go to everyone's channel, but I'm always curious what my subs do - if they have more than a handful of followers. Yours looks very cool and totally helpful. Peace.
Dara, Thanks for watching. Having been in school during the 80's as well - I have to disagree. There is a lot more innovation shown here that those days ( although some aesthetics like Russian Constructivism certainly have been around 100 years!). However, this community is always open to hearing any additional ideas you might have that I missed covering. Feel free to contribute something.
Yes of course! with the advent of the computer there is alot more possible. But the basic style reminds me of what we did back then. Most of our professors were from Basil and the typographical designs are really a throwback for me. also the simplicity and use of so much white space reflects those days for me. Best regards and nice weekend. Great videos by the way!
I love your lovely and honest eyes and your smile while you speak about something you love! I suscribed on your channel and thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Jaqueline, Great to have you here. Thanks for checking out my other videos! Share one or two on social media with your tribe. Still trying to grow! I'd be forever grateful.
No problem Philip! I've used a lot of his posters as inspiration for projects in my time as a student (which will be over soon)! I'm glad that I came across your videos! I've shared a few with my group of young designers already, you're really inspiring. :)
Melody, I usually don't even look at the artists names when I am grabbing jpgs as I cruise the web looking for trends. I searched Magdiel an saw her work. She's really working the Peter Max color vibe. Thanks for sharing my videos - the rest of my catalog has a LOT of great educational stuff for designers just starting their careers.
Marzia, Thanks for watching. I don't really do tutorials on my channel. But there are alot of software tutorial channels out there on YT, just do a search and you'll find some great ones!
Kate, You captured my channel goals perfectly: short, informative and inspiring. I'm glad I delivered. I have a huge back catalog of stuff you should check out. And subscribe to my newsletter - more thoughts, resources and stuff there, too. Ciao!
Thank you for your kind reply. Another style of art I'm completely gaga about is 'Communist' Chinese propaganda stuff - to me it's a kind of Chinese version of Rockwell's beautiful Americana art. I owe the little I know to a superb art director cum designer cum reprobate rock vocalist by the name of Ryan Tarboton. I was very fortunate to share a studio desk with him for a few years and he taught me well. We even got some work done! Peace.
My dream is to be a great graphic designer! After watching this video, it gave me plenty of ideas. The struggle is, if i made something that looks like some of those in the video, then I'm afraid that people will say I stole some of the ideas. But I'm just getting inspired! How can I do graphic design, without ''stealing'' other people's ideas?
I feel like these are not trends but rather common design techniques. Trends from 2017 for example were the many "brush script over water colour" style logos, or the use of duotone through various medium and techniques.
Vlad Stefan, Thanks so much!~ Can you do me a favor as a small thank you and my video with a friend or two? I'm trying to build my subscribers. More to come!
Playbill is overused to a point that it's painful, it has to stop. And many other trends are around for a while, but it's a very nice video to give you many ideas to come up with in a short time and the examples are really nice.
Martin, Point taken. I know its been around for eons, but I freaking still love it I hate to say. Always have. Trends are never defined by clear years or even short timelines, but I have to attache a year to the video title cuz sadly thats how people search on YT. Thanks for the POV and comment!

yup he looks like a designer in the thumbnail, ill check this video out
Phillip, I couldn't recommend without knowing a LOT more about it. But many of these trends are in heavy rotation. Glitch might be a good choice - Apple just used that one in a recent TV ad I saw - but trends are meant to be inspiring - try put your own original spin on it.
Jojo, I hope you could read it. I sure couldn't. Great design happens all over the globe and the trends span our entire little blue sphere in a matter of a couple years. Its pretty amazing when you think about it.
tbh, trends in graphic design are solely related to poster graphics or graphics that are for here and now, for lasting graphics such as logos or a "look" for a client you need to either have a natural instinct or need to be classically trained. personal opinion. Good video for the content though
Adrienne, I disagree. Graphic styles become "trends" when they have gained enough usage to be classified as such - and many of these "trends" have been around a very long time. Russian Constructivism has been around 100 years as of this year - I think I'd call that "lasting", yes? Sure, some will fade away - but you can't design in some sort of historical bubble.
