I highly recommend you resting and soaking in those babies postpartum. I have had 5 and the newborn stage is a precious treasure and now your toddler gets to enjoy it too. I'm done having babies, but I still love watching your videos! Feels like talking to a friend. Good luck these last few weeks!
P.S. I never mentioned jealousy with my toddlers and new babies (age gaps of 20 months- 2yrs.) I encouraged them to cherish the baby and emphasized how much I appreciated them helping me with baby (like getting wipes, diapers, picking outfits, etc) They get to feel proud of their new achievements and love on baby. It turned into all of my big ones being excited about new babies and sweet sibling relationships.
@@annarocha3254 wow, it isn’t all about you. This is a new precious beautiful life. Love on that child. It’s easy to love. Try to circulate. Sing and bond with a baby. Yeah we’re tired blah blah blah but it’s just the simplicity in the newborn stage. Love.
@@Abcdefghijajajaja Thanks for the judgmental response. Hopefully the original poster will have more constructive advice for someone who genuinely struggles with newborns.
I encapsulated my placenta and I had covid at 13 weeks preggo. It helped soooo much, I don't have anything to compare it to because this was my first baby but I highly recommend it!
The side sleeper was a life saver for me! Whenever someone asks me what's the one thing they should get, i say a side sleeper! Also most of these you can lower one side more, so that baby is on an incline, helps if you have a refluxy baby. 10/10 recommend!
I encapsulated my placenta! But all the things I was told it would help with we’re still big struggles for me… milk production, ppd, energy, etc. The coolest thing that I got from the woman who did mine was a great picture of my placenta and she dried my umbilical cord and shaped it into a heart
12 weeks with baby #1 ☺️ Our hospital requires us to have a pediatrician to even register with them. Honestly, I don’t think I would’ve thought about until way later but they should deff do that for every hospital. One less thing to worry about when it comes time!
Yass for the Snoo! I'm a pretty laid back granola type mom and I bought the Snoo with my first and loved it!! We rarely ever turned it on but he still slept in it all the time. Just knowing that he was safe and secure and couldn't roll over gave me so much peace of mind!
Just had my second baby girl 2.5 weeks ago, we do cloth diapers with our oldest but disposable with the youngest for the first month. So glad with that when she was pooping 14 times in 24h😅🤣. Also, she already has a cold thanks to the oldest bringing it home from daycare. The breast milk might make it less severe but still, the poor thing... The post partum doula system from the Netherlands is awesome btw. They run your entire household for a week, take care of your family, and make sure you get to recover. Love it! Get it arranged if you can.
I thinks it sounds so crazy that a postpartum caretaker is something you have to think about. In the netherlands everybody gets a caretaker voor 10 days. This person does medical checks for you and the baby but also can Cook en help with the brother or sister. They clean all the things that needs to be clean (bathroom, bed, toilet etc)
Yes it was amazing! We could really focus on recovery and adjusting to the new situation because of her help.❤ They are also very skilled and trained to spot issues, both physical and mental for both mom and baby. So you can get help as soon as possible.
I did listen to encapsulation and it truly made a huge difference but you will get judgment and side stares the doctors the whole time they called me crazy and said that it's a toxic organ in that I shouldn't ingest it. They even made a really cool blood print so it's a picture of your placenta and made a heart shape out of the umbilical cord.
Great tips! I also was thinking all about baby the first time and for baby #2 I was more concerned with what mom needed 😂 I invested in comfortable nursing clothes, a new pump, and pumping/nursing bras. my first one I went in thinking I’d exclusively nurse and within 4 mo I was mostly pumping but not prepared for it. Also meal service was a great idea. I didn’t even think of that. I just started making extra freezer meals (they were a lifesaver for sure). When I’d make dinner starting at 20ish weeks I’d just make two and put one in the freezer.
YEEEESSSS!!!! Perfect timing! I’m 34 weeks pregnant and have a 15 month old and it’s so different second time round. All about the practical things. I was so nerdy making notes while watching this. 🤓😂👌💫
please do the podcast on encapsulating placenta! I didnt have enough info to make a decision on it the first baby and I'd really like to the second baby!
Sooo we are the same exact amount of days preggo as each other and I’ve been watching you before we got pregnant with baby #2 (it’s my baby #2 too) we both are doing hypnobirthing too because of you but this is my first time with it sooo im so excited to do it this time. Totally changed my outlook on birth
I love your videos!!! I’m due this week, can’t wait to have my second, I’m also doing Hypnobabies. My first is almost 8! 😅 it feels like I’m starting over. So excited though.
Love your video, but I got the Frida postpartum kit and it was such a waste of money. The hospital gave me tons of lydocaine and tucks and pads. I bought depends and it was so easy. The other stuff in the kit ... well I did love the cool packs, but I think you can easily get those separately for cheaper than the kit.
Yes to carrying around your baby all of the time! From the start I've carried my now three month old around with what's basically just an immensely long piece of cloth. You wrap it around you and your baby and I can even loosen it to breastfeed while carrying him around. Don't know whether it's common in the US as well, though. Love from Germany and wishing you a wonderful delivery!
I wrapped my son as an infant and for the first few months all the time! Made life so much easier and was great from breastfeeding and calming while I had both hands to do things.
Yessss!!!! I’m so excited to hear about you trying the placenta encapsulation, this is my third(due in June) and am hoping to do it as well!! I also had covid so we will just have to see what happens
I was looking into encapsulation, but decided not to because as a researcher, I wasn't able to find sufficient evidence to support the benefits! I've only seen/heard anecdotal evidence which doesn't fly for me haha. If you find otherwise, I'm very interested!
I did Christian hypnobirthing and ended up having an emergency c section but I was able to remember how to calm myself in all the craziness. It REALLY helped me ❤️
@@shansopink it's an app! They have multiple courses you can take that go along with the tracks you listen to. I took the one called "pain free birth" but they also had one called "faith filled childbirth"!
Just found out I'm expecting my second and couldn't be more thrilled that my favorite RU-vid mom is 1 step ahead of me! Im also in Minneapolis and its crazy how often my friends are like "have you heard of hey shayla?"
I pulled up this video because I'm pregnant with my second and they're due in August. And immediately cackled because your opening line is 100% right. The first time you're worried about baby and the second time you're worried about everything else. I want to say half of my registry is actually just stuff for me- for labor and for coping afterwards. 🤦♀️😅
I was super skeptical about the snoo; my friend whose baby didn't like it offered to let me borrow it. And it's actually magical... So when it works - it works! I'm all into granola, but this is a small thing that goes a long way...
The postpartum rest for 40 days is also an Indian one. I don't know about north india but where I live (kerala) we have a similar custom where someone comes home and prepares a variety of 'recovery' foods and massages mum and baby and such. There are even ayurvedic centers where mums can go for like a month and basically it's like postpartum spa lol
I trust the health experts who say there are no benefits of eating your placenta like doctor mama Jones. I am expecting my third baby and I haven't had time to think all those things you mentioned... 😅 How you have so much energy?! 😄 One thing I know is that I will take my TENS in the hospital, it was such a big help in my last (unmedicated) birth. 💕
I've been doing expecting and empowered for about 3 weeks postpartum now and I honestly can't believe that I don't pee myself after sneezing. This is my second baby, I really wish I knew about it the first time. I love it!

I don't have many people I follow on RU-vid that I just HAVE to click on when I see a new video so it's a nice feeling when I see a video by Shayla because I actually get excited. :)
It’s not just a Chinese tradition, but also a Hispanic one. I would be so interested in the recipes you find and share! I found it so helpful when my MIL brought me all the warming food. You really don’t realize until you’ve had the baby how much it helps. Please make a whole video on it! ❤️
Is highly recommend getting the book!!! Or comes with basically an additional pdf that’s 80 pages of recipes (If you buy the audible). “The first forty days”
I would just add that if you are being induced, it can take a few days and then if you end up with a c-section you stay longer. I was in the hospital with my daughter 6 days. 3 days being induced and 3 days after my c-section. So I would pack a hospital bag accordingly.
It may sound a bit hippy (but I suppose this is the place for that!) but all mammals eat their placenta after giving birth and it seems like they recover better than we do.... I had my placenta encapsulated and have heard that it really helps stabilize mood swings after birth as well as get a lot of nutrition back into the mom. I bled A LOT after giving birth yet had a very speedy recovery. I'm not saying that's 100% from the placenta but I don't know that it didn't help either!
Check out Blooma! They have amazing postpartum doulas that can encapsulate your placenta too. I had my placenta encapsulated and although I have nothing to compare it to since I just had my first babe.. but I do think it has helped tremendously. I haven’t lost much hair, have had stable mood, feel pretty energized actually and just all around feeling good and connecting with my sweet babe.
Also I wish I did some light weights for my arms before my baby was born just too keep my strength up. I was pretty lazy for the last 2 months of my pregnancy and when my baby was born I noticed this Weakness In My arms. Its taken a few months to be able to pick him up and hold him while breastfeeding without feeling weak or like I have no muscles!
Hey Shayla! Have you got any experience with recurring BV or fungal infections? Have you experienced weird discharge, yellowish/whitish? It’s killing me that it changes every week 😭 I’m so anxious all the time… 😳
Your gyn should prescribe some pill to help with that (sometimes it's a bit of trial and error, not all pills work the same for everyone). And I was told these infections get worse with sugar, so cutting on sugar helps immensely. No sweets, no processed foods, no white bread, flour... Sucks for a couple of weeks, but afterwards you feel way better and everything regulates itself.
I never knew some babies don't like carriers. color me disappointed that after buying 3 different carriers my lil guy still refuses. I think he might change his mind when he is allowed to face out. Hopeful!
SNOO is great! The short legs are helpful for being able to reach in more easily from your bed, and you can use it how YOU want. We kept the motion limiter on the whole time, kept it at a pretty sensitive level, and went in to baby if it seemed like the SNOO couldn't settle him in 1-2 cycles. We are the types that we ended up co-sleeping after the SNOO and not sleep training (didn't really know this would be us, but here we are). I certainly don't think the SNOO interfered with our bonding or anything along those lines.
Hi Shayla - is this evidence-based advice? Could you please share your qualifications? I would like to know what your advice is based on. If it's based on your experience only that's more than fine, but I think it should be made clear.
I had my placenta encapsulated, but before, like 2/3 hours after I gave birth, I also ate some 😳 Yes, you read that right, I ate some. Sounds so gross, I know, but my doula who also encapsulated it made me a fruit smoothie with like a quarter sized amount in it. Couldn’t even taste it at all! But it was nice to get that hormone replacement in right away since it takes a few days for the capsules to be made. Might be worth considering if your placenta is useable!
I’m 34 weeks with my first and love your videos! It’d be great if you did a video or podcast on the placenta capsules. I’ve heard such mixed reviews on it and would love your insight on it.
YOU"RE SPEAKING MY LANGUAGE!! I have someone on at the end of the month to talk about it!! Also, so have I. My clinical nutritionist said yes, my midwife said no (because of covid). But I've heard from multiple people that your body will either love or reject immediately
Absolutely agree about the Hypnobirthing 💛 I used the Christian Hypnobirthing app to prepare for a natural birth; it ended in an emergency C-section but I listened to the tracks as they rolled me into the operating room and it definitely helped to keep me calm & focused. I will be coming back to this video once we’re heading for baby no.2 👏🏼 thanks for sharing! Love your videos and approach to motherhood!
I am 29 weeks with baby #2, and my first is 2 1/2, so I so feel you on all this lol! Just wanted to note that I learned how to use a woven wrap when Covid hit, and I LOVE it! I think you might like them as well. Diana with Wrap Your Baby is who I learned from, and I highly recommend her membership for leaning how to wrap.
I think we might be pregnancy twins! I watched a bunch of your baby#1 vids knowing I wanted kids and now I think we're due around the same time. Doing hypnobirthing and cloth diapering and all your videos are amazing and helpful
I can't recommend the Snoo enough for a second kiddo! I co-slept all the way through with my first, so my husband was skeptical of the Snoo as well. My 3month old starts the night in it, and then we co-sleep after that. She's regularly getting 4-6 hours chunks of sleep in it. Worth every penny. Also, when nighttime chaos happens (e.g., poop catastrophe with my older kid at 4am), I just put baby in the Snoo while I take care of things and it can swivel her right back to sleep. Or, at least be somewhat responsive to her while I have my hands full lol.
Definitely take your time off post birth! Sending you lots of good wishes! I think the hype about the hospital bag is having control over an experience you don't otherwise have control over.
Hey! I just tried to click on your birth plan link, and it took me to be added to your email list but it offered to give me a list of what I need to know to make youtube videos, not the birth plan list. 🤔
Could you possibly do a video on the different meal kits and which would be best for different families or something about what worked for you and what didn’t?
Hey Shayla! I just discovered your channel. You are amazing. Thanks for sharing your tips and stories. I also think that you remind me of one girl I follow for a long time. Her name is Cathrin Manning. She is a youtuber. Check her out of curiosity. I think you ladies are like sisters. 😄✊️💘
I encapsulated my placenta and had such an even tempered postpartum experience. I’m a highly anxious person and prone to the occasional depressive episode. I expected it to be intense but it really wasn’t. I truly believe it was thanks to encapsulating my placenta.
I think snoo for me wasn't just about soothing baby and not me - it was about calming baby fussiness when it wasn't even needing me. Noisy sleep is hard to figure out for me
I just have to say the first 40 days is a Christian traditional as well. I am orthodox and the baby gets “churched” or welcomed into the church after birth after the first 40 days.
100% do the placenta encapsulation. I’m a chiro and fully support the science and sense of it. I did it with my first and felt AMaZIng from when I gave birth until pretty much when I ran out of them. This time I will stretch them out more! Definitely helped with the hormonal transition and energy and recovery and breast feeding and literally everything you’re trying to navigate after giving birth.
Placenta encapsulation was the BEST thing for me postpartum. Really helped with iron and building back tissue along with my mood. The placenta capsules paired with acupuncture and chiropractic care are a solid start for recovery 👍 (Plus the stool softeners 😂)
I really loved the halo bassinet for having the baby out in the living area because I could make it really tall and then the toddler couldn’t get right on top of her or accidentally step on her
Hey Shayla, I just want you to know that I have been listening to your videos for the last several months as I have been preparing for baby number one and have incorporated. A lot of your advice! I plan to do the Hypnobirthing, I’ve taken several book, suggestions, and tips. At some point, I am sure I will let you know how it went on the other side, but you get the credit for referrals!
ENCAPSULATION OF MY PLACENTA WAS A GAME CHANGER!!! It was night and day for me, the reason of my mental stability during a very emotional draining situation I was going through with my in laws!! Totally recommend it!!! Dooooo itttt
That’s what I’m afraid of too, especially since I hate swallowing pills or I’ll forget to take them. I don’t want to waste the money and “trying it out”
@@Maverick-zy7yu yeah that’s exactly what I did. I started to forget to take the capsules. Honestly, I wish I would have done something else with my placenta and money.
great vid but the ocd comments really made me cringe :/ as a sufferer it's not cool to equate it with being anally retentive. it's a major anxiety disorder and it's upsetting to hear it trivialised that way...kinda like 'im so skinny i look anorexic". sorry to come off AS anally retentive but there's just such a huge public misperception that i kinda feel like i need to help ppl understand. thanks for the bubba tips.
I know this can be a very personal topic but I'm having so much trouble finding info, quality info on delayed vaccination, or selective vaccination.. if this is something you're willing to share. Please do... Or what resources have you used to make your decisions? Side Note: just from the little bit of you we get to know from your videos.. I kinda foresee the side sleeper coming in handy lol...
Due with my 6th in 3 weeks... Look into homeopathics for labor, delivery and recovery. Your comment about arnica made me stop to comment here. I take arnica (orally) and it helps SO much. I've had 3 hemorrhages, a baby that got stuck, terribly fast and brutal deliveries all to say that I've had to take Tylenol 3 (after morphine for one) with my first 3 babies. Once I found homeopathics, I've literally used nothing but them, one was my babe that got stuck and also hemorrhaged, and have had better pain management, during and after. (All 5 births have been unmedicated.) I'm super crunchy too, so I think you might appreciate homeopathics!
May I also suggest that you have cream for hemorrhoids on hand. With my first, I ended up having that issue, ( I had no idea what that even was at the time), until I told a woman I went to church with (who took me under her wings) that my bum was itching! It was from pushing so hard she had told me. So a little tip for that. Try to remember to push like you have to go number two. Not with your stomach muscles. Use your bum and low back muscles. 😉 Hope this helps someone! Many blessings to you all! Enjoy the journey!
LOVED LOVED LOVED getting my placenta encapsulated! Even if it's just placebo I'd do it over and over again. I come from a family history of horrible postpartum depression. I did have some PP anxiety, but I had so much energy and I don't think my depression was that horrible or lasted that long. My mental state was worse when I started weaning off of breastfeeding than it was after giving birth. Kind if wish I would have saved some capsules for when we started weaning.
Hey there! First thing, I absolutely love your videos and podcasts. I have listened to them and watched your videos for the past 6 months, prior to getting pregnant in February (I'm between 9 and 10 weeks, first ultrasound is tomorrow!) I literally check your page once a week for new videos because I love them so much, I feel like you have taught me a lot, so thank you :) Anyways, I wanted to ask, is your discount code for expecting and empowered still valid? I downloaded the app and put in the code and it acted like it took it but it didn't seem to adjust the price any. I would love to start it this pregnancy, however it's quite expensive without any sort of discount.
Yes it should work!! Send them a dm on Instagram! Or email them. The code HEYSHAYLA gives you $20 the annual memberships and $5 off a monthly membership or $10 off the physical guides.
I would like more information on the labs and testing and natural remedies and support for hormones. Where cna I find this? This is totally for me. My clinic let's me log in on my phone to see my lab results and I'm like always hyper analyzing them trying to figure out how to fix the low or high ones.
I had a SNOO for my first and we loved it! He co-sleeps with us now (he’s 16 months) and I don’t think it took anything away from our bond. I think you’ll really appreciate it and I hope it works out for you.
Thanks for this helpful video, Shayla! Crazy how much our perspectives change after we have been through the rodeo once. Would you be able to share how you are planning on preparing your daughter for her transition into "big sister" and if you have any strategies for going about introducing her to your new baby. (While trying to relieve any sibling jealousy or tension)? Ty!
Omg no!!! I’ve been trying to find someone to come on my podcast to talk about this! One person said when baby is here to say “hang on baby I’m playing with your sister right now” so the toddler feels validated. Also not to force anything, someone else compared it to your husband bringing home a new wife 😵💫 And someone else said special toys they get to play with only during nursing times. I also just invested in the Sakura bloom scout carrier (but honestly any carrier) I imagine that’s how I’ll be dealing with the duo most of the time. And carrying baby (and other ppl carrying baby) is great for their vestibular stimulation… not 100% sure what that does but I’ve heard good things 😂🙌
10000% recommend getting your placenta encapsulated!! I think it helped me SO much! I don’t know about the Covi- thing but I had marconium all over mine and my doctor was like “don’t do it” but the midwife that did the encapsulation said it was totally fine she just cleaned it up well. Every time I took it I told myself “it’s just a beef liver pill” lol
I’m 38 weeks pregnant with my first and planned to get my placenta encapsulated. So many mums have said to me the difference they noticed from not eating it with the first compared to their second. They said there baby blues and mood swings were non existent with the second baby and their iron levels stayed high even with heavy bleeding.
I had covid twice during my pregnancy with my baby girl and I encapsulated My placenta. I feel like it helped so much!! My placenta looked fine, I was just told it was a little small? So I had a smaller yield of capsules
So for me with my co sleepers I have my bed on the floor and then when a new baby comes if the toddler isn't sleeping in their own room all night I put a cot or toddler bed by my bed and they come into the room and sleep there, we can still "snuggle" by holding hands or whatever. I find this much easier than trying to put the new baby in it's own "bed". I have done this with a 20 month old, and a 30 month old, and I am a few months away from doing this with an 18 month old. Also just a heads up after my first baby they spit up A LOT and I found out that it was because my body was so good at making milk (since it had done it before) that they were getting too much, so when they would try to nurse just for comfort they would be getting milk they didnt need so I wound up having to use a binky for a short time.
Its funny listening to people in my life who are so opposed to placenta encapsulation, I personally have no issues with the thought of eating my placenta, growing up on a farm knowing that every other mammal I have ever seen give birth does this doesn't make me think its weird at all. Also having a postpartum doula to mother the mother should be the standard postpartum care for all women, what a different world we would live in if women were truly nurtured in the postpartum space.
I tried daily harvest during my chemo treatments and same. they get me like 🤮 also, I wouldn't use arnica on post party bits. it's warming and deeply penetrating
Pregnant with baby three (after 7 years 😅) so this is exactly the content I need! Also very cool realizing we are due super close to each other depending when you filmed vs when you posted! Hitting 37 weeks tomorrow and I’m READY.
You should get someone to talk about baby brain chemicals. Like a baby crying by itself releases cortisol, but if they are being held they release endorphins even if they are still crying. Babies in group daycare release cortisol. Get an au pair instead. Much more helpful, not all that much more expensive.
