I had images of you dragging your bikes through the brambles and then discovered Stephen's CCC19 map was different to mine. I downloaded mine off a cycling website... 🤦♂️ha ha
That was a watch and a half! I’ve done the Trail 4 times. The first time I got lost a lot - but you surpassed anything I managed. Well done for keeping going.
Well done Mevi. I came to the channel for tips on converting a van but I've stayed for your personality. It's really heart warming to see the change in you over the years from moving into the van because you didn't have a lot of options to now. You deserve it.
Thank you so much. I realise my channel is a bit 'Marmite', so it is a real privilege that people keep following the story. I'm getting back into a regular upload schedule now. Thanks again, take care.
[EDIT: donation page is now closed) *The donations came to £2,200 which when GiftAid is added, totals £2,719.45 The donations have all arrived with CatZero and are being put to use supporting some of the Humber regions most disadvantaged families. Well done everyone.* 🤗 On the 25th June 2021 with my support team John & Mandy, I attempted the ride over 3 days. It was much tougher than I had trained for. My map was mostly garbage and kept taking me down sections that can only be completed on foot. I constantly got lost. Some sections of the trail were so overgrown, that I had to push through nettles and brambles. There were times during the ride that I questioned whether I could even complete it. My next challenge has been to edit all of the footage (9 SD cards full of 360 degree video) into an entertaining and engaging movie for you all to enjoy. It's taken me since the beginning of July and nearly every day for the last 4 months I have been working on this. It's a labour of love which I hope you will enjoy. Grab some popcorn.
I truly enjoyed this video Mevi, the video and audio quality is fantastic. I have been planning my own Trans Pennine expedition for several years now and you have inspired me to get on with it and make it happen. Thank You!
Hey, thanks so much. I'm so happy that the video gave you the push you needed! As you might have seen from the video, I put more effort into planning for the video than the actual RIDE. Ha Ha. Thanks again. Good luck! 😎👍
Congrats Mevi, you can do what ever you put your mind to 👍😊❣ plus having a lovely support group is a huge plus.👍👍❣❣ such an achievement, you should be very proud of your self. Thank you so much for sharing, truely enjoyed seeing it in the raw, so to say, Lol.👍😊🤣⚘🎈🥳🎉 Now rest your back side and find a masseuse to help ease the pain.👍👍⚘❣Lovely to see you Mevi and thanks for the laughter.🤣🤣⚘❣👍👍
Thank you again, Shirley. Determination goes a long way and so does the support of great friends! I discovered it's really hard to train for the unknown! The gym helps simulate hill climbs as Hull is totally flat. I still need to book myself into the osteopath. 😄
@@pas7680 and I've not done a ride since. Ha ha. Scarred for life. The bike got donated to someone who needed it more than me. I'm considering my options for a 2024 challenge that I'll hate, but I can grow from. Any suggestions? I've considered Hadrian's Wall.
Excellent achievement mate. I’ve been roped into doing a c2c next year. Haven’t ridden my bike in years. I’ve got a gravel bike with no suspension and they want to do it off road. Not looking forward to the sore arse malarkey. :-(
Easily the best thing I’ve watched. Ever! I’m looking to do this next year. Your externally spoken inner monologue has had me laughing all the way through this! You are a legend! Love how you stuck your fingers up as the cyclist went past! Any idea why you had so much issues with the route? Any tips?
Well although I pretty much hated every minute, I'm really happy that I did it. As for the route, if you stick to the NCN (national cycle network) map, you'll be golden... If like me, you stick 100% to the TPT, you're very likely to come unstuck. The map I downloaded had sections like you saw in the video - disastrous. I've not tried it, but the Komoot app seems to get a lot of recommendations. Maybe start your research at the NCN website. www.sustrans.org.uk/national-cycle-network Good luck, Ian!!
This video reminds me why I’ve not been on the bike for months! I’m not a natural. I still have the bike in the van and I tell myself to get back out on it. One day.🤭
How many extra miles did you do going the wrong way lol ? Great video mate. Made us giggle all the way through. Well done sir! Gee Gees doing cliperty cloperty shit LMAO
Too many miles. My "cycling map" had large sections of the "walking route" included. The Trans Pennine Trail is NOT the same as the National Cycle Network that shares a lot of the paths. 🤭
Well done Mevi, you seem to make up a lot of your own TPT!! As a TPT regular I recognise some of the point where you struggle - it's a massive challenge I did it a couple of weeks later and some of the path was even more overgrown! I did it on a road bike which weirdly made all the a frame gates a bit easier
Well done Rob!! I still need to find the author of the map. Let his bike tyres down or something! 😆 Maybe my challenge next year could be to WALK the trail with a petrol strimmer and clear the path!
@@Mevi it did seem to take you on a lot of routes that were the walking routes instead of the cycling or just ones weird routes that aren't the TPT. I used a Lezyne MACRO GPS with a breadcrumb trail to follow. It's insanely basic but very hard to go wrong, especially at night. I can't recommend it enough! Anyway - well done again 👏
watched this over two days. I dont know if it was your struggles that kept me watching. My first thoughts were riding in that t-shirt in the rain was that you would get cold even though it was summer. You acknowledged that later. I dont know if the apps caused you to get lost so much or if its badly signposted but you have put me off a bit :( Maybe spring time might be better if I do have ago as the overgrowth was wicked, the nettles keep your legs warm though. Congrats of the fund raising, Im assuming you had more than 1 tshirt or you cant smell.
I ordered enough t-shirts for me, Mandy and John for the 3 days. I carried a deodorant with me! I got a bit cold, although I wonder if I would sweat balls with a waterproof on anyway. I'd take sunblock next time. There were a few cycling videos before this one, where I talk about insurance. My bike and body were covered and if it were stolen, I'd get a replacement bike or travel costs to home. Velosure was affordable. The map I used was strictly the TPT but included some walking sections, rather than the cycle alternatives. If you wanted to make things easier, stick to the National Cycle Network. It deviates from the TPT, but reliable maps and resources are available. Following GPS was really hit and miss, with slow to update displays. The signposts are kinda crappy. A lot of the TPT didn't seem to have been maintained since it's creation! Go for it. Even if you hate every second, you'll have some great stories to tell.
A month or more reframing the 360 to normal video with different views, the rest of the time editing it. I even bought a new computer so I could actually complete the movie.
@@Mevi I don't think I could handle the extra hassle of the 360 mate, as you said earlier, you don't miss anything and they're definitely a great job but I feel your pain with that long edit. Short videos or using one for segments would be the reason I'd get one but I don't think I'll bother lol. I still have a couple of videos worth to edit but can't find the motivation to do so 😆 The way the world is at the moment has knocked the wind out of me a bit.
I'd never do that again. 360 is great for trick shots, but not for hours and hours and hours of footage! Yeah, the world is shit. We do our best to make it a tiny bit better. Why not finish those videos? 🤗
Congrats Mevi - great achievement 👍 And appreciate the effort put into the edit - made it a really entertaining watch, and really helped tell the story of your journey. Could I ask which 360 camera you were using. Has inspired me to have a crack at the TPT myself this year - through all the ups and downs it looked like a great adventure. Cheers.
Thank you so much. 😎👍 Insta360 One X2. It honestly mostly looks like garbage and takes a lot of effort to get reasonable images out of it. The camera needs a lot of light. I reframed in their Studio app on a PC and the final edit in Davinci, although I did a lot of the rough edits on my iPad with LumaFusion. However you mount the camera on the bike, test it and test it and test it before you commit to it. The first mount was a great angle, but caused me so many headaches as it kept trying to self destruct! Find a proper map app. Maybe even buy one. Looking back I have mostly fond memories of the ride, but perhaps I have blocked out the trauma!! Day 2 before Mandy joined me over the Pennines was a real low point. I hope you go for it. For me it was a great test of my motivation and commitment. I would say it’s a great conversation starter, but most people don’t actually care. Do it mostly for YOU and maybe raise a little cash for your favourite cause to keep you focused. Good luck!
More of you to love, bro. 😁 You'd struggle to get me back on a bike, but I'll keep it in the van just to be able to tell them about that one time I cycled 215 miles.
Hi Mevi. Love the video, I'm hoping to cycle from Manchester to Hull using the tpt in a day to catch a ferry next summer. Can you please give me some idea of time needed to do the route?
If you stick to the NCN rather than the TPT you'll make better time. (The two routes share some sections, but some parts of the TPT are difficult or impassable by bike) I got very lost on what will be the early part of your day, but if you have a good NCN map, you should be OK. Learn from my fails. Note that I am NOT a strong cyclist, so my 10hour days could be shorter for you.
Thanks Mevi, catching the trail at the start of the Woodhead reservoir so will be missing all the tricky hard to follow bits I think. Setting off ultra early (4am) to make sure we get to Hull in time for the ferry, doing a bike your to Greece next year! Thanks once again for a great vid.
Google Maps was used to get me out of trouble. I used an offline GPX map of the trail so I didn't have to depend on mobile signal - the map had sections of the *walking* route which caused me all kinds of headaches. I stayed strictly to the TPT, but you might prefer to travel the NCN which is mostly the same anyway.
I’d say I’m “geographically challenged”! 😉I had a bad map which in the video I figured out by lunchtime day 2. My idea was to follow the TPT without going on, say the road options of Route 66, for example… the cycle website I downloaded the GPX from had this map that followed footpaths. I honestly thought I had planned properly and proved I was wrong pretty early on. Well done, BTW
Candy is not a snack re glocose suppositories. Body craves Fructose, the natural sugars from fruit. You'd have done better with a bag of dried fruit n nuts. Or an apple, banana, orange...etc.
Thanks. I learned a lot about my body doing this; lack of fuel might have been my biggest downfall. My next big challenge should come as less of a shock. 😎
Guess they don`t like disabled people in wheelchairs and mobility scooters using these trails with them very narrow barriers ,, Think that could be a court case for descrimination 😵 ,, 👍Mevi
The Trans Pennine Trail was established not that long ago, you would think making it accessable for everyone would have been a consideration. I guess getting all those councils to even collaborate was a big enough challenge. Some of those neglected sections are quite remote. Some sections seem to have cyclists in mind, some are family friendly. There's a large proportion of the trail that were established bridleways so no tarmac.
Watched the whole video, well done Mevi. You could have made it clearer in the last hour of the video if your arse hurt at any point rather than keep us guessing.
