My uncle was deaf and my mom made sure we knew basic ASL to communicate with him. Fast forward 30 years to present day. I have been using your videos to become more proficient at ASL. I stopped to help an elderly woman who's car had broke down and was deaf. I began signing with her. She relaxed, we got the help she needed. The smile on her face was the best thank you i have received in the 20 some years as a police officer.
I'm 75 and only have 3% hearing left. My health care provider tells me it is time to learn sign, but I live in a rural area and classes are not available, so these RU-vid lessons are a HUGE help. Thank you so much!
I would suggest finding videos of ASL dictionaries done by certified ASL translators/ interpreters. I am completely deaf from the Effects of Meniere's Disease.
It's actually really nice knowing this as someone who is interested in many languages i feel like this is weary important and that schools should teach us this or at least have it as something that students can say if they want to
It's my fourth day learning ASL. I already know how to introduce myself and have a basic coversation using Asl. Thanks for your videos 🤟🏻 greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
Same here. It is my second day and I can introduce myself. I know the numbers and alphabet. I always wanted to learn LIBRAS (Brazilian sign language). But my American boyfriend gave me the book “The Art of Sign Language”. I am loving to learn ASL and Signed English.
The format of these videos is pedagogically strong. Changing your hairstyle, shirt, and background color increases the uniqueness of each sign demonstration. When coupled with the varying video speed, different camera angles and several repetitions of the sign, retention is maximized. Incorporating a helpful simile or informal etymology reinforces your student's long term memory of the sign. I'm really impressed. I like you.
Thanks for this Jared. I have to be honest, I had to look up a couple of the words you used! We definitely put a lot of focus in our format and use "production value" to not just make the content look pretty, but to make it more effective.
Sometimes though, I can’t see exactly what little think you do with your hand, for example in I need help, I couldn’t tell exactly how to do the “need” part of the sign.
I do not want that her hair, shirt, or the background create distractions. Each lesson is adaptable. Using the setting options, I focus on and repeat a sign, as many times as necessary, altering the speed, volume, etc.
It's not mouthing "Fish". You still need to mouth the word you are using if you are Hard of Hearing or a Hearing person. The "Fsh" sound is usually to abbreviate "Finish" in a way that can show the severity of the usage of the word.
So my wife was born wish hearing issues (not 100 percent) and we find ourselves repeating each other and thought to start learning. We are also taekwondo instructors and just thought how amazing it would be. An even bigger benefit is that we are both scuba divers so learning this could help so much!
I'm someone who almost never talks because of my anxiety, and this has been going on since I was a toddler, and my friend who knows sign language because she has deaf family members has been encouraging me to learn more. Thank you for these videos, they are very helpful!
Some words would be easier to learn and remember if you taught them in together, such as opposites. Put right-wrong, happy-sad, yes-no, good-bad, etc. I know that helps me learn.
Third day going through ASL videos. I'm actually able to create basic sentences by learning all these words. I have no reason to learn this other than I want to be able to sign if necessary. This specific video series (150 Essential ASL Signs) has been FANTASTIC and I'm going to continue to rewatch these so I can get the basics down flat. You and Victoria from TakeLessons are both easy to watch and learn from. *Touching fingertips to chin and lowering arm forward*
I’m a nursing student and I decided to learn sign language in advance to master everything since this will really be useful when i’ll soon work as a nurse. Thank you for this!
I've been watching this video at least once a day if not twice over the last few days to learn ASL and I will continue to use this video until I am completely comfortable with these signs before I move onto the next. Thank you ☺️
Thank you SO much! I am super exited to learn more! I don't know anyone deaf, but I've always been interested in ASL! Can't wait to learn more, and again, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is honestly so helpful. I work at an elementary school with 2nd graders and three of the kiddos are barley learning how to sign (due to their disabilities). I now know what they are trying to sign and even I will show them a new sign or two! Also! Doing that 'fish' for finished had one of the kiddos so excited and now everytime he signs 'finished' he's always adding in that little 'fish' sound at the end!
I'm so glad I found this! I've been wanting to learn ASL for ages but have struggled to find a good way to start. I absolutely believe it should be a mandatory class in school, but as it stands I'm happy to have found this resource!
I have been eager to learn how to sign, so very happy I found this! Also, it feels more awkward for me to NOT make any expressions or do anything with my body, LOL. I need to keep that in check with some signs, but I like the descriptive ones a lot more!
I've never heard of being too expressive with ASL. From my understanding, the more expressive, the better! Deaf / hard of hearing people get to know your personality through how you sign similarly with how hearing people get to know your personality with how loud, fast, etc you talk. ☺️
This really helps when I go non-verbal because of anxiety, I can try to explain to my friends whats wrong and they help me talk to my teachers while I use ASL :D
Growing up with a single mom who who’s hoh but not technically deaf made me want to learn how to sign. My mom is blind so it wasn’t to communicate with her since she can speak and hear out of one ear, it was to communicate with others who are deaf or hoh at her therapy groups 😭 they were all so nice and i just wanted to be able to tell them how awesome they were
I accidentally watched all the other 150 essential word video before this and this really cleared a lot of things up! Your videos have helped me learn how to say multiple conversations! Your the best ASL instructor on the internet!❤
Your videos are perfect. Fun educational easy to learn. Perfect to learn ASL. There is no critiquing your videos because they are perfect. Your videos are perfect. Thanks for making these available. You get ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 10 ⭐
Really enjoying your videos. Its helping me learn! Do want to let you know that your website's dictionary page is currently broken when open the all words tab. I wanted to e-mail you but couldn't find a contact page on your site.
I have to say, you are an impressive teacher! Your transfer of energy is impressive, very synergetic. You’re concise, and your para-verbals/non-verbals are second to none. Oh and it’s the little things, like changing the background, idk if people care, but it makes a huge difference and shows a clear distinct separation between the gestures. 5 stars! And how do we recommend u giving a TED talk? This would be a cool topic to share.
I'm 74 years young and going deaf quickly ... Profound in right ear, Severe in left ... in the last 6 months. After trying many tutorials, I find YOUR channel the easiest, most complete, natural ASL videos out there! SHARING to Facebook in case my friends want learn to communicate with me in the future ... THANK YOU IMMENSELY!!!
I'm glad I found this web site, you show and describe very well, and you remind what to do at the end of the conversation. I took up asl in 1992 and then worked in a church inviroment working to become a translator for almost two years. I was very good, but not anymore. Anyway thanks for all the hard work you've put into your web site.
I work at a smoothie shop, and there are a few regulars I have noticed are deaf. I decided to give it a shot with the very minimal asl I had remembered from learning it in the past. The way their faces lit up when I signed even a basic, “hello, are you deaf? I can help!” Made my day. I can’t wait to get to know them more!
Love! Just started to learning ASL today and have learned so much! I used to feel bad when I worked at the bank and my deaf member would come in almost every week and I never took the initiative to learn ASL to communicate. I think learning ASL would be great! Thank you.
I hurt my friends feelings by overtalking over the phone and we have to go to work today. (I admit I've become very good at debate with my upbringing, but it makes me someone that can easily become the most admired by many or the most disliked). She really means a lot to me and we talked about learning ASL to communicate better. I'm going to surprise her with some phrases and hopefully we can continue being friends and use ASL to speak our hearts instead of getting caught up in wordplay. She really loves music and linguistics whereas I love engineering and the Christian faith. This may bridge the gap between our speaking styles and help us communicate better long-term. In a heart to heart kings of way. God is showing me how real His word is by making me live through Proverbs. I have to be slow to speak and swift to listen. I'm subscribed and I hope to become a better communicator in general, and especially for my relationship.
Thank you! I have always read lips but now with masks, I find myself so lost! I am hoping learning sign language will give me some power back! I appreciate all your hard work!
I work at a theme park in Missouri and for deaf awareness month (September), we were given a pad of paper for people who are hard of hearing to write down what they need to say to us if they come to the train. While I am willing to do so, I also figured learning some asl will also be beneficial, and this was the place I came to first. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for these easy to understand signing videos! I'm starting a new job at a special education school thats mainly for non-verbal autistic children (I am also autistic) and I believe it'll help to be able to sign at least the basics
Recently got into the cannabis industry and have come across a few patients who are deaf and I really wanted to communicate with them and help them. These videos have helped so much! Thank you!
Thank you for this, I tend to go periods where I become non-verbal and this helps a lot, especially when I get overwhelmed and forget how to talk. This was really easy to understand.
-My aunt is deaf. She asked me as a favor to learn ASL so I could talk to her at family gatherings, since no one speaks sign language, and she doesn't understand what the rest are saying... she just stares without understanding. Every time I want to give up, I'm reminded of the promise I made to her.
Thank, Miss Meredith. I live in a community where many of my neighbors are deaf. I'm learning to be able to communicate with them. They are very friendly and sociable, I never thought they are so eager to socialize with other people given that they cant hear nor speak vocally. Your videos are very didactic. Keep them coming. You have a new subscriber.
I'm glad we found this video. We were discouraged from learning because it was hard for us. But you were able to even teach our littles some words for when they go silent, too. Thank you for that. This is helping a lot
Hello, I am so glad to have found your channel. I am in my third semester for Deaf Studies. This long summer break was the pits. Watching your channel has given me the jump-start I needed to refresh my skills. LOVE it! Thanks for the basic conversation.
this channel has been extremely helpful for me. i’m homeschooled and learning a language is part of what i have to do. the way she explains it in these videos helps me fully understand the sign. the only thing i’d say you change is don’t tell us what the old signs were. sometimes that will confuse me and i end up using old signs. otherwise you’re doing a great job! :)
Thank u. I learned asl to communicate with my deaf or h of h patients and customers. Haven't been working for awhile but going through these lessons help pass the time productively and prepare myself for future conversations
Honestly your videos are phenomenal. Some of the best I've found. My daughter is autistic and insists on signing and I love that for her, it gives her a way to communicate comfortably. I've tried so hard to learn but your videos make it click. Thank you ❤
You’re good at teaching ASL!! I’ve seen a lot and you helped the most! Thank you!!! I wanna study ASL. So starting by teaching my kids some common ones while I learn as well.!
I’ve loved ASL for a few years now, but eventually just lost hope of fluency. I saw an amazing interpreter and decided to give it another shot jus to learn, and these videos are SO helpful. I’m on the third or fourth by now, but always start my session by looking at each word and seeing if I remember how to sign it from all the videos prior. You make these videos so easy to follow and digest, but also so easy to get through just for review- thank you!!
Hi! A little late but ive been watching your videos recently cause its been helping me learn ASL. I have a customer who signs, and was never able to communicate stuff to us, so I decided to help and learn ASL for her and she absolutely LOVED IT! It made her so happy, which in turn made me happy so I decided to learn more!
This page is so helpful! We are teaching our infant to sign to help him communicate before he can speak and are relearning as we teach him. It's been so helpful and makes us feel very happy to know we could communicate the basics to any non hearing person we may meet. Thank you for helping us and others!!!
i wonder why there are so many? is it because of simple language changes in words, such as accents, or words that dont exist? i guess for the same reason everybody doesnt speak the same language.
@@makenzikenyon7478in fact, proportionally there are far more sign languages than spoken languages. This is because up until very recently, many deaf communities were fairly isolated, in institutes for disabled people, in certain villages where there were high rates of deafness and within families, barely interacting with each other. These communities then all developed their own sign languages. Over the last centuries some linguists and teachers started to formalize and spread the sign languages in their region. This is how we end up with the few hundred "standardized" sign languages. However, there are countless thousands of sign languages that were never recorded or finalized.

I'm only in 8th class rn and I got interested very much in learning asl. When I found this RU-vid channel I was so happy I can't even explain. This is really helpful content than other RU-vidr's. Thank you so much
Thank you for this! I've been having hearing loss issues, and I thought it would be better safe then sorry to start learning sign! I've got the alphabet and regular greetings down pat, but I'm working on the more in depth stuff. Thanks again! ❤
I have had many customers come up to me trying to explain this situation and I always have done my best to accommodate them often relying on written form. This video has helped me to communicate much, much better. This should be a mandatory class in H.S. in my opinion.
I've been thinking about learning a sing language (didn't know which one) for a long time. I speak a lot of spoken languages and I wanted to try something new. Yesterday I run into this short "The Silent Girl", and decided to start. I did the ABC yesterday. It was a lot of fun and easy. I will do this 150 word' series to see how it goes. Thanks for this video!
@@LearnHowtoSign Yeah! Your videos are great! I don't have a personal reason to learn a sign language. I just like the idea of being able to communicate with a deaf person in the real world just to see his reaction. It's gonna be cool! I speak some "exotic languages" like Chinese, Hebrew, Greek and Russian and I just love their reactions when I start speaking their language. It's like we become old friends in five minutes. I love that! Actually I should probably study the french sign language (LSF) since I live in France and I'm traveling around Europe. But your videos are so useful and clear that I decided to let LSF for later. Keep up the good job!
My daughter is 8 and has hearing loss and aides to help. She was so interested in learning sign language. I taught her several signs as I know it as well but am rusty from not using it. I couldn’t find a class for her age and resorted to you tube. These 6 videos are wonderful. Easy to follow great explanations and enough words to have easy conversations! I wanted to say thank you and keep the videos coming.
This is INCREDIBLE. I've been watching these with cc on and trying my best to fully immerse myself. We've been practicing with our 8 year old who has unilateral deafness. I then proceeded to send this to everyone in our circle so people can better communicate ❤❤ thank you!!
I'm confused on "how are you?" In one example both hands would rotate in unison and the next example for the same phrase would show the hands rotate opposite to each other
This is really helpful because I have an anxiety disorder and when my anxiety gets really bad talking sends me in to a full panic mode where I can barely do anything
I work at a grocery store and thought that it was horrible that no one knew sign language so I started learning and signed to a death person at work and decided to keep learning, thank you for making this!
Thank you for these videos! I’m currently studying to be a special education teacher and I’d love to specialize in deaf and HoH. My school doesn’t offer ASL courses unless you want to take “filler” credits and so I’m trying to prime myself now so I can at least have some of the skills until I can get a focused endorsement to formalize my training and understanding 😊
This series is SO helpful! I have a new roommate who is deaf, and my brother and I have been trying to learn ASL to communicate with her. Your videos are the best I've found, and this series, in particular, is absolutely incredible. The signs are all super helpful and well described. The segments in the video showing the times for each sign are also super handy because I can skip back to them if I need to be reminded of a specific sign. Thank you so much for making this resource!
Outstanding video. I had a lot of deaf friends back in the late 80s so I learned to sign. I have to admit that I used pidgin and not ASL though I did take a 10 week ASL course. After I moved away, I quickly learned the meaning of the phrase, "Use it or lose it". It didn't take long for me to forget, but I'm in the process of trying to re-learn it again. Subscribing to your channel is a good start. One thing I've seen is that so many signs have changed since then. I know there are "regional" signs, but I'm talking about common signs. In the 80s, "who and what" were completely different. Lots of others as well. When my daughter was very young, we taught her some common signs so we could tell her something without saying it out loud. "No" was always fun because you could get your point across without having to say a word. We got the same reaction with the sign as we did if we spoke it. "Yes, pop/soda, toilet, eat, thanks, etc" were some of the others.
Hi! I have double jointed fingers which "pop" into certain positions and can't really hold an in between position without a ton of effort on my part. This can make doing certain signs or switching between some signs very difficult. Are there possible adaptations in the general community that are understood? Or would the recommendation be to just slow down my signing?
Just found this channel and completed part 1. Been wanting to learn how to sign for years and will finally take action. Good to see I have 2 years worth of content to catch up on!
This is a terrific refresher...I learned some ASL years ago and have tried to teach my family, but I really don't have anyone to practice with...these videos will help me with that. Thanks for posting them!! 😃 😊
words/phrases covered in the video: don't want finish/done forget go hello help how are you like more need nice to meet you no not/don't/doesn't please correct thank you want wrong yes bad busy fine good happy sad same so/so
This really helps me a lot because I found out that I am going deaf. I didn't know ASL or anything and needed a service dog for certain things! this rly helps me learn to speak when its hard to hear ppl!
I know this video is old but I can't stress how much your whole channel has helped me learn so I can communicate much easier with some of my coworkers!
I worked for a couple last week who are deaf. I was so nervous but they were very patient with me. It was a mix of charades and writing. They were both kind and funny, and I had a wonderful time. I am learning ASL so when I go back to do some finish work I can show them what I have learned. I’ve got the alphabet down so there’s that! I’m excited to learn more. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity.
Thank you so much for these guides, me and my wife are having a harder time talking verbally and have learned some sign in the past and now we are refreshing our memories using your lessons. God bless!
My one-year-old suddenly started screaming about every single thing and I was going crazy until I found your videos and started teaching her how to ask for the things she needed (e.g. milk, all done, mommy, changing, etc.), and then she started calming down and using that instead of yelling. Even though she's hearing, she was just very frustrated about not being able to communicate her needs. Now I'm learning ASL in a more in-depth manner because I truly think this is a great skill to have. Thank you for your videos!
Thank you so much for this! I have epilepsy and many other health issues, but sometimes my seizures take away my ability to talk for a half hour or a lot longer. If there is not a phone around or I am heading into another phase of the seizure there is no way to communicate what is happening. Everyone is very confused and upset. Your Medical Video made everything extremely easy so the next time something happens my husband will know what is going on, again thank you for everything!!! I am going to watch all your videos, ASL is something I've always wanted to learn! God Bless!
I came here just to say I know the asl alphabet for a very long time and I’ve worked in customer service a very long time and I’ve never needed asl in my Dailey life aside from my children father being hard if hearing but even then it was never needed. Now my job position consist of me connecting with regulars Dailey and a few of them are deaf and I speak to them in the alphabet but I feel like it’s not enough I watched your basic conversation 30 signs video and I retained it so well the next day two deaf regulars came in and I showed off my new learning signs and their face lit up. Just keep doing what you’re doing cuz there might be one or who lives you lit up. You never know. I’m stilll learning you’re so good at explaining. Thank you so much.
i’m really interested in doing courtroom translating so learning and reviewing as much as i can, as early as i can is super important to me!! thank you for all the great vids
I'm learning sign and I am more visual so having a move example rather than a book with a still picture really helps! I read a book series called A Silent Voice (it also has a movie too but the book includes much more detail) not only did that series help me, but having anxiety I would love to non verbally communicate since I am soft spoken and wearing a mask makes speaking much harder.
I wanted to start learning asl since I watched a show involving sign language. I’ve also had a few instances at work where deaf people had come and it had been tricky trying to communicate with them. I’m entering university so hopefully there’s an asl club I can join since I want to practice more and hopefully become fluent. It’s a really interesting language to me!
I work in fast food and want to learn asl again because i've had a couple deaf people come in and i would like to be able to help them better. Thank you so much this is really helpful.
My mom is deaf and it became difficult to communicate with my mom and this whole help me a lot. My mom would be very proud of me and I will show her this ASL. I saw her talking to her deaf in S.L. and that’s when I decided to go to this and this would help me a lot thank you so much for making this channel ur helping people understand ASL and also helping people with S.L. this will help me thank you ❤
Recently started learning a bit of sign language. My bf has ptsd and adhd and often gets sensory overloaded to the extent that he doesn't want to talk. Even though we're living in the Netherlands, we chose asl as our "own little language" to make sure nobody around us would understand what we're communicating. This is especially useful for us in social gatherings where he can simply sign "home" "I'm tired" etc to me without e.g. offending anyone. Thank you for your videos!
