In video # 1522 we'll take a look a the new Peterson Mayor GSP pick kit. Well made, great ergonomic handles, and high quality materials as usual, but the composition of this kit left me scratching my head. It is almost like Peterson had a bunch of over-run picks, slapped them into a kit, and called it the Mayor". Yes, it has a couple of good selections (in my opinion), but some rather illogical choices as well - all bundled into a nylon case and priced HIGHER than if you had bought the components individually. The final insult was overcharging for shipping... this was the straw for me, so gathered up every last Peterson product I owned and threw it all into one final Peterson giveaway.

Having owned a few Peterson picks, I would say they are okay at best, and the fit and finish quality is below average, especially for the price. All of the picks come with a really sharp ridge down the middle that I often file down by hand before using, which is a pain, as well as minor visual defects like molding lines and thin bits of plastic sprue on the metal where it meets the handle.

" PMSL in ATTEMPTING to back bbill, you've (i believe-) INSULTED his judgement, to a point; it was bbill who COMPILED (and maybe helped design, too...?) , the ULTIMATE peterson set, so there being "not a single Peterson “set” that I can recommend.".... lol calm down, gentlemen; OK, OK, maybe this, in your eyes, may be something close to an oddball set, but for other pickers, this may well just be the GOLDILOCKS selection.... and let's be frank and open, here, boys; straight out-of-the-box, peterson picks are difficult to beat as an all-round well made commercial picksets.... " honestly, petersons are solid commercial picks, do not get it twisted from this review vid; this is mostly dolly-out-of-the-pram grandstanding possibly based on the shipping mistake here... *just saying*

That assortment is exactly what I buy in single picks the most. The “weird” purple handled smaller hook that confused you looks like a hook 7. I use the 7 a lot with locks with smaller pins and it’s great to reach around long pins when the bitting has good variation. For instance, an American 1100 with bitting like 74837. With a standard hook, I’d have trouble getting around the 8 for the 3, and might also press up on multiple pins as they are smaller. This hook, however gives me a better feel inside the plug. The other hook, I just call the “nub” and I use two different types. I use them on cheaply made, small key way, small plug locks (like from my local dollar store) that are almost restrictive of hook shapes and I found that they work really well. It’s sad that you rage quit Peterson that way, they are the best picks I’ve used in the last 14 years or so I have been picking, so I’m fine with the premium cost.

I too have gotten used to free shipping from just about everywhere, but Petersons Picks are of the highest quality when it comes to the big manufacturers. Sparrows, Multipick and MadBob's is usually my go-to sites for picks. Happy Spp'n bruv!

I do like the new picks (a couple .018" euro-slim hooks) they helped me open one lock my other picks all would bind up in but the lock I really want open is still trolling me! I've got it into a bit deeper false set now but I can't feel a spool and if I ease up at all I drop pins. But sooner or later I'll get it! Thanks again and I know I'm happy and having fun when my hand hurts this much! LOL

@@robertoaguilar5958 recently bought a beginner set from sparrows for the cutout locks with security pins to practice. I'm also very disappointed, these locks don't behave like any of the other locks I have, which makes it completely useless for practice. The picks they supplied bend easier than my other picks, give much less feedback, and the coated handles feel weird and gummy. Very disappointed.

A hundred spent at Multi pick will get you the ELITE 17 pick set and a few TOK tension wrenches. Much better picks, case and value. Even then I'd follow Bill's advise and make your own at about $7 each for the ELITE picks. The Peterson set would be nice for an everyday carry if it was priced below $50, but that thick case would be the first to go.

This has been a long time coming. Peterson made some good stuff, but with the price and the end quality, there are many other brands out there. You can get more than twice the picks for half the price.

I wouldn’t buy that kit and it was a fair review but I recently got a Peterson Just Picks set in 18 and it’s fantastic. Good quality and at a decent price. They’re still great picks with great handles and feel if you have the ones you want which i guess is why you said go to the site and build your kit up.

Been watching for a while now and this will be my First time trying to enter a contest but I lost my set recently and even a poorly reviewed set is better than not getting to practice. I appreciate the videos and thanks to them I’ve learned a lot more than I would have just reading the little pamphlet that came with my $15 set of picks. The "light" prybars are not supposed to have teeth and cost $8 per. The ones with teeth cost $10 per wrench. You can tell that the lights originally had teeth but the teeth have been ground almost all the way off. On my prybar light the teeth were just blunted. Like other things they do it just makes no sense. Until recently pick brand didn't matter much to me. I had tremors in my hands. I changed doctors until I found one that has helped. I now take a med that was intended for seizures. My hands are very steady now. It's funny how even steady hands don't remove that sour taste caused by Peterson weirdness. I've run into that several times.

As a potential beginner (...soon!), I've watched dozen of reviews, from this channel and the usual suspects. Thing is, I'm french, and indeed our key ways, even here on my building and in the village (I've ... lightly checked on my way to the small store we've got here), are nothing like your american locks. After hours of comparing tools, these ones or even Sparrows' seem ..huge to me. They would never fit any lock I've seen around here. So, even if it's a bit...temerary from a debutant, I've set my choice on the Southord C-801, I know they're really thin and for my first picks, I might use some little credit card tools to train. Then later, as this set lacks a Bogota, I might add a german jacknife to complete my tool box. You video and LPL's really convinced me this hobby was right for me, I'm literally mesmerized by the trade. Also, goes with my name, smith in english, Schmitt in german/french. (I quite like the channel of your English pal, too, he seems like a nice chap' - also, his beginner videos are perfect for training- even if mentally, my tools are 8n the mail en route to me, they should be in the box tomorrow morning; Christmas in advance!)

I've never ordered anything from Peterson, and never will. I have pick sets from Multipick, Sparrows, and Southord, and *MANY* individual picks and other tools from those, and many other suppliers, but *NEVER* Peterson!

I like Multipick's dual gauge kit. All the picks are useful, the few things I want that aren't in there aren't really picks: things like shims and feeler gauge blades. But the vast majority of kits do stink.

Bill, I love ya but don't be one of those people... "They charged me $9 shipping but the package says $7! They cheated me out of two dollars!" No, they charged you $9 shipping... AND handling! The invoice even says it! $7 was the shipping cost and $2 was the manual labor to package it up and get it posted.

Aaron, Based on the weight of the kit shipping and insurance SHOULD have been $3.55. Handling is something that most respectable manufacturers build into the product price, not disguised as part of the shipping. Peterson’s quality and business practices have been deteriorating for quite some time and this “Mayor” kit and customer ripoff was, for me, the last straw.

Tired of Peterson , Bill? I actually noticed the same problem med the Petersons kits. You always get something funny in the mix. And they are pretty expensive, I have 2 Peterson picks in my kit. The 18 ' gem and the 25' hook. i really like them, but if they dont cut it, my goto picks is allways Sparrows. They are easier to come by, and affortable, living on the other side of the world., i have to take the shpping and taxes into consideration.... Does this make any sense :o)

I very much understand your beef with Peterson, especially considering pretty much every point you made in this video. Was just about to place an order for Peterson’s serrated tension wrenches when I watched this. I agree with you Bill for what you get a lot seems overpriced. I had a grouping of 0.018 picks which I figured I’d try as I already have 25 & 15s but know people that like the handles of Peterson. I’m still going to put the order in as Peterson is the only place I’ve found the serrated tension looks, and I’m sucking up the fact that the 3 of them is $22 plus nearly $8 shipping but lock picking isn’t a cheap hobby; hell I have yet to find a cheap hobby. I enjoy the videos and boy did this one reinforce my thinking as well as saving me some money.

Have looked through the Peterson website a few times over the years and ‘added to basket’ some of the things I would find really useful..... then when I click on checkout and see the price, plus shipping??...... heart attack time. Problem 2 is as you say, the weird leftovers that would sit in the ‘Tat’ box for years unused?? You should take a leaf out of locknube’s book and do a collaboration with Peterson’s or Sparrows and come up with a ‘Locklab’ kit. I bet there’s plenty that would buy one in a heartbeat??!!!!!!

I have a couple Peterson picks that I love to use. I don’t love their prices for what you get and the sets are out of my range for most. I bought several sparrows kits and some marine grade shrink tube and I love them. I was hoping Peterson would release a small kit but this doesn’t seem to be what I hoped for. At least toss in a 15 thou blue handle deep hook guys...

Someone cleaned out the scrap bin and QC fails and older picks (number stamped at the base of the shaft), and decided to make it a kit. That is very poor for a company such as Petersons.

I like Peterson picks but I agree they blower the goose on this kit.

My first set was a peterson and it was ok, but it cost a ton! Also I don't like the handels at all, since those need more work to sand than the picks. I wish they'd think their pricing again. Thanks for the review, as always.

I think that is even less for more money than my Dangerfield kit. The ones more often used by me already make it worth it. The finish is also better.
