I used to be the guy running through the airport at top speed to reach my gate in time. Never actually missed a flight, but was always down to the wire and stressed. Several months ago, I started changing the way I live, in part because of the "slack" blogpost you link to in the description. I realized that while I *thought* that I was saving myself time and effort by only dealing with problems as they asserted themselves, I was actually accomplishing the opposite in most cases. For example, you can procrastinate on filling up your tank, but only to a point. And then what happens when you wake up one morning, are in a hurry to make your early meeting at work, and the tank is at "E". Now you no longer have a choice: fill up the tank or run out of gas on the road. You've backed yourself into a corner. So I've started trying to be much more pre-emptive about things in general. Top off the tank early and often. Do the chores *first*, then do projects. Buy Christmas gifts *early*. And so on. Protect your slack! If for no other reason than that there may come a day when you need it.

And then there's those situations where you give a detailed cost-benefit analysis to your bean counters with a clear best choice that gives your system that tiny bit of wiggle room and they turn around and say "But you could technically do it with less right? Or better yet no budget at all? Yes? Good? Good.". I've got at least half a dozen people up my chain of command I now want to show this video too.

Hey, one of the primary use cases I design these things for is quickly communicating some prerequisite idea in service of a deeper discussion on a topic (reducing inferential distance). Sounds like that'd be a perfect application! :P

We always build our datacenters with a 1.5 rule for resources. That way, if any rack of servers fails, it can fail gracefully over to it's partner rack elsewhere. The services will run at reduced capacity, but will still be available and able to send notifications to the people responsible for maintaining them instead of dying silently. That means that at about 30% of our total resources are going underutilized any given time, however we never have the possibility of complete outages even if an entire location were to suddenly go completely offline.

Thanks Matt! :D I've read a lot more libertarian-type stuff since our last convo & even found some merit in full-on anarchism - if you've got substantive ways to protect oppressed groups in the midst of shrinky-dinking government, I'm probably more open to such ideas these days. Glad you still find the show entertaining! ;)

@@THUNKShow Without diving too far down this rabbit hole, I find a lot of interesting historical support for completely free markets in the fact that Japan, Britain, and Germany were once our most hated enemies and are now some of our most trusted allies. I'm not saying any of those countries, or ours, have ever experienced completely free markets, but I see an increase in freedom of travel of labor and goods in part cause, not merely correlate with, an increase in goodwill, peace, and prosperity. The inverse is so obvious it is cliche (if goods don't cross borders, soldiers will). Glad to see you're interested, if at least in only an academic sense, in libertarianism and anarchy. As an aside, as I said during the Bush administration to my Republican friends, you'll dislike the power you support in the government once a Democrat is in charge. Then Obama was elected and my prediction came true. Then I said the same thing to Obama supporters; then Trump was elected... rinse repeat. The benefits of a person like President Trump is demonstrating to some folks that a powerful government is not a good thing. It has been 18 years of extremely powerful and painful education. I'm hoping during the time period of 2020-2024 people will take those lessons to heart. In any event, keep up the great videos!

@@THUNKShow He is definitely very critical of many people. Particularly, certain philosophers. Are these the polemic arguments you need more convincing on? I.e. his critisism of post modernists using scientific words in ways they do not understand (his words not mine)?

Since "seen" is the past participle of "see", past being the important part the _adjective_ _noun_ ever perceived in any manner will necessarily be in the past. Not only should we expect that, It's pretty much tautological. This all assumes that you don't have a time machine at your disposal.

This old documentary provides a real world example of what you are talking about which has cost hundreds of lives. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mC8bHxgdHH4.html Scientists mathematically calculating a maximum, with no leeway and then rigidly sticking with it despite an enormous amount of physical evidence proving their calculation way too low., On air travel, people who arrive at the last minute are not, not allowing enough wiggle room but veteran travellers in the know. Budget airlines overbook economy class but rarely fill business and 1st. So if you arrive at the last minute all the economy seats may have been filled up and you get bumped up. I've lost count how many times I've been bumped up, once I got from London to Bombay and back being bumped up to first class both ways. Notice the check in desk is empty for 20 mins before last check in with a bunch of people sitting around, then notice how 5 minutes before it closes they all get up a go over to it, saying "after you" "no no, you go first" to each other".
