WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

I made one very similar to that out of the perform from your Auction. I couldnts notch real deep. Only about half of yours. But the point looks very close.

Some good info today. When you deep dive maybe talk about some of the myths of heat treating. I started in about, 2000 in Texas my brother and I had nothing better to do. We made a self bow and arrows using chicken feather flights. Nothing we did was that spectacular save for the fact we were 14 and 9. We would shoot arrows at each other from across the yard to catch mid flight. The rocks in Texas have a lot of good among them. Now I am in Illinois and prolly should learn more about slate considering what is available. I liked the talk today.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
Thanks. Yeah, definitely go and pick up some slate. Wear a mask when grinding, though. That stuff is nasty.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
Oh yes, I'll try to talk about the myths and do some debunking.

@@KnapperJackCrafty from what I seen on working slate wet grinding was a thing to spare yourself from dust particles.

I find that I have to adjust my technic for every stone, but in general I like the sliding technic with sandstone and indirect percussion with steel and hit it with a cobber cap on a wood stick.

Edit* it was 2 bottle neck bentons.... Just posted the 2nd point i found yesterday at the lake. Look at it when you get a chance. It looks to be from a very thin ,very small tab. Its got cortex on each side of the point. Idk the material type or point type but looks like a Scott's bluff maybe. Its a contracting stem.

I’m afraid knott
@mikemason4758
@mikemason4758 Год назад
A couple ropes get together and decide to go get some beers, they go to the bar and the bartender says we don’t serve ropes here. The rope’s buddy had already said they couldn’t get served but he was determined and already boated he could get the beers. So he promises their is a place across the county. So they go on this road trip and the whole time his buddy is saying give it up man you can’t get us any beer. Well I. The store the clerk looks at him and says we don’t serve ropes here. Now he is sweating it as his buddy is teasing him and calling him a liar. And he says one more stop I got this. He goes back to the first bar and before he goes in he ties himself into a knot and beats his head on the ground for several minutes. He goes in and the bar tender says hey I thought I told you we don’t serve ropes in here. And the rope says “nope I’m a frayed knot”.

Now you’re giving excellent advice, heating treating has to do with how big and the lowest temperature timing, people get in a hurry way too many times. You just explained a key part. Most people will never understand because they will never get through that much material.

350°. we're talking fahrenheit, right? that would be 175° C. is that for every "flint" or just for the blackblueish sort we all love?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
Yes, Fahrenheit. The temperature varies for each flint or chert. The average is 400°F.

Why do you scratch the edges before you knock off flakes? Just to avoid cutting yourself?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
Noper. I dull the edges so they don't crush when I hit the edge to remove a flake.

Can I heat it in an air fryer?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
I don't see why not. It might heat up too fast, though
@petercoene5930
@petercoene5930 Год назад
@@KnapperJackCrafty I'll have to give it a shot as it seems easier than setting up one of those clay cookers that you have been using and waiting for the oven to preheat. Only problem is I think the timer on the air fryer only goes to 1 hour. But still, drop a few rocks in, crank it to top temp and let it run until it dings a few times.
