I got a free copy of Sonnet with the book "Introduction to Antenna Analysis using EM Simulators", from Artech House. No idea if it is still available. One of the authors was president of Sonnet Software. Just a suggestion for those who don't have the freebie line to Keysight.

I think we can all agree that our definition of affordable and Keysight's definition of affordable are miles (light years?) apart. Still nice to have the curtain pulled back to reveal one source of this voodoo magic. Looking forward to seeing a few of these designs tested in your garage. Thank you for sharing this with us and try to disregard the whiners. Regards, David

@@willthecat3861Seriously??? He does all the work and we get to sit back and watch, I think he gets to decide what and where the point is. The great thing about this channel is the diversity of topics he covers, not doing just mailbags, kit builds, or (worst of all) product reviews of the latest tat out of China. Sure, we will never use this software but isn't it nice that he took the time to show it to us and try to explain it so that we get some understanding of how the stuff we like to work on is designed? Whining about a video lets the rest of us know you are too lazy to get your own channel and make the content that you want to watch.

I've wanted something like this to play around with designing a strip line SWR coupler, however the price is way out of my hobby budget. I'd love to see a video showing at least how it's done and that the thought processes are that go into such a design.

The weird thing is even though this is right up my street, when I see these astronomically priced packages that have no path for hobbyists AND represent a perpetual financial cost I kinda lose interest. It's cool and all but I think analysis of packages that a hobbyist can engage with would have way more traction. It's one of the reasons I dropped Altium because even though they imply they support hobbyists to hook you they really don't. You'll find that out when your next annual renewal comes around as the company claims poverty to justify their inflexibility on the absurd renewal pricing and disregards the fact that you're a hobbyist non commercial user.

Interesting video and quite different from your usual ones. I'm curious how many viewers are engineers vs. hobbyists. Has Keysight changed their stance towards electronics hobbyists? I myself am a hobbyist just getting into electronics. I have enough of a math background to not be intimidated by Maxwell's Equations (or any equation for that matter). But this kind of software still just seems like magic. I'd really love to know what are the actual algorithms they're using when you press the optimize button but that sounds like it may be proprietary secret sauce.

I did a survey and engineer to hobbyist is about 50 50. I've used lots of optimization software in my optics design work. This is a very hard problem. In optics, the designer has to write their own merit function and that is quite difficult. This seems to be more limited (easier). the trick to these monti carlo searches are not getting tricked into local minimums and finding the global minimum.

Also, there are some free micro-strip design and simulation tools which are okay... even for some professional design... probably you need ADS if you are working on a patch antenna for a hypersonic glide vehicle. Most of us are not.

How large would a stripline 2m bandpass filter? It would be nice to have a 2m and 70cm filter to work satellites with two radios with less interference. A duplexer would be interesting also.

ADS was a good tool. But, you don't need ADS to do micro-strip design; but, you need to know what you are doing. IMO the power of ADS lies in the simulation parameters you can access... such as the pcb board types, and copper weights... as was mentioned. It's also easy to use ADS (or Genesys) to come up with a design that meets your specs; but, you haven't got a clue how it's working. That's the voodoo... which is short for "I'm too lazy to learn the engineering involved... so I'll pretend I wouldn't understand it."

@IMSAIGuy I hope you do follow up. You've created some good pcb templates on JCB. Perhaps they can turn your designs into something we can play with. It seems there are examples that might work already. Presently, I can't go above 6GHz. Skynet thing was just a dumb movie reference. Your 1587 consecutive days of posting stand on their own. Hoping you'll dwell on an interesting topic is just a request. Something new everyday is rarely a good thing.

The pouting, unappreciative B.S. couched in clumsily mixed metaphors aside, how is RF engineering software in any way “Skynet”? Are the microwave filter modeling algorithms somehow precursors to the rise of the machines? I would think the _actual machines_ that the engineers develop would engage in the violent subjugation of the human race rather than their graphing calculators. I found an incredible trick that allows me to enjoy every single video I watch, and it’s a secret that RU-vid DOESN’T WANT YOU TO KNOW! I’ll break it down so even the dimmer bulbs like @jspencerg can understand it, so stay with me here - _I don’t watch videos that don’t interest me_ 🤯 I call it “free will”, and I think it’s going to be *huge* once it catches on. - Thank you, Mr. IMSAI, for the *oceans* of content you produce to share your knowledge with us, and for freely passing on your experience and skill. My life is tangibly enriched by your efforts.
