VN24 - Dec 16, 2021 - Kamen / Germany - Around 15:50, a very serious traffic accident occurred on the A1 freeway near Kamen. Traffic was backed up on the direction of Cologne (southbound). According to initial investigations, a 26-year-old truck driver from Slovenia overlooked this and crashed into the end of the traffic jam. He initially collided with the Opel car of a 40-year-old driver. Due to the force of the impact, the gray Opel was pushed onto a car/trailer combination in front. This white BMW was occupied by a 27-year-old driver and a 29-year-old female passenger. The BMW was then in turn pushed onto a truck in front of it, so that both cars and the small box trailer were literally squeezed together between the two trucks. The 26-year-old Slovenian truck driver, as well as the 40-year-old Opel driver and the 27-year-old BMW driver and his 29-year-old female passenger were massively trapped and had to be freed by the fire department. To rescue the trapped persons, a tow truck operator from nearby offered his quick help by lifting the car roof with the crane of his tow truck and holding it in position. Unfortunately, the 40-year-old Opel driver died at the scene of the accident. The 27-year-old BMW driver and his 29-year-old female passenger were seriously injured and subsequently airlifted to hospitals by two rescue helicopters that had landed at the scene on the highway. According to the current state of knowledge, the lives of the two are now out of danger.
During the rescue operations, the A1 freeway had to remain closed in the direction of Cologne until around 23:00.
You can see the salvage work and the clean-up of the accident site in part 2.
