I totally hear you on the story refresh for lengthier RPG’s. I think Dragon Quest Eleven did that really well. I don’t know how it triggers but if you took a significant enough of a break they would give you a recap of the last couple hours of story beats told in still photos and a voiceover (may have just been text it’s been a while since I played… need a recap to remind myself). I thought the execution was great. Wish more games would do something similar
The recap idea for long RPGs that you haven't visited in a while is such a good idea. This should definitely be implemented. I am an old man now and sometimes life just happens and next thing you know you want to finish that game you realized you haven't touched in a year+ and then you are like "what is happening?" Lol.
Final Fantasy 16 and now Rise of the Ronin have this nifty qol feature where at any story moment; you can open a log which gives you character and area details to let you understand what's going on.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 is great too. I haven't tried any others in the series, but I did love VC. The story is great, and the mix of real-time action with turn-based strategy was both very unique and super well-executed. Definitely a must for turn-based strategy fans looking for something fresh!
Unicorn Overlord is fantastic! Original combat system, TONS of quality of life touches (seriously, this might be the gold standard now), great soundtrack, and room for LOTS of tinkering if that's what you're into. Get in!
@@justmeok2 I think they could've done better with the story, and the pacing was just a bit off - you only get close to your full abilities near the end of the quest, so you can't really explore them unless you keep playing after the final mission. But all in all a fantastic game, and I hope that the commercial success means we get a sequel!
5:30 don't worry you're not the only one. That's one thing I really liked about Witcher 3 is that the loading screen would catch you up on the story so far. I wish more games would do this
Valkyria Chronicles is a really underrated trpg series imo, and 4's a solid entry point so 80% off shouldn't be ignored! 40k Mechanicus is...fine as a game, but needs to be said that the soundtrack is *brilliant* background music when you want some gothic sci-fi vibes in your life
I bought the original and I don't know what to say about it so far. Im only 3 chapters in but the button controls is confusing to get used to also I struggled to figure out what buttons did what at the beginning since the options menu apparently doesn't exist. The gameplay is decent but the map layout is a bit confusing at times.
Two Point Hospital rocks! I gave my physical Switch version to my former friend as a gift. Just before I played this week’s SwitchUp video, I had purchased the digital version.
Bought the physical special edition of that game for £8 from game collection the other day, not played it yet. Has it been patched up to stop game crashing, I see a few people saying about game crashes?
@@foxyfox5 he actually sounds like my former friend we ended our relationship and the last game he told me he bought was two point hospital lmfao. How is that for a twilight zone.
I've always kept Dave the Diver and Dredge away from my wishlist. Buy whenever I see your videos, I keep getting reminded somehow to add those. I open this video and see the sea, and now Dredge was bought. Each of our backlog are treasures to open!
Is paper mario like Mario rpg? I heard the last few dropped all rpg mechanics but still had story segments. I have one on the wii (forget the name) and it had way too much story for a Mario game, and I like Mario rpg, but tjis one I wasn't feeling.
I'm trying to save my $$ for Dave the Diver if it drops on sale in preparation for its physical release this week if it doesn't become available in local retail stores and only imported. But these sales are right tempting. Cheers SwitchUp, hope everyone has a good one!
Thank you sooo much for alerting me of "Persona 5 Royal" being 50% off! I was crushed when I lost my physical cartridge copy, and I swore I would pick it back up if I could find it cheap. Some places offered physical copies cheaper, but they kept messing me around with cancelling orders for no reason. Thanks again, and Cheers, fellas!
Speaking to RPGs having an option to recap when you've been away for a bit, the "Travelogue" in Bravely Default II did this and it was great! I wish some games would do this for controls/mechanics. I tried to go back to Ghostwire Tokyo (on PS5) this weekend and I was absolutely lost about how to play. The game gives you a bunch of abilities that are nested within some sub-controls and I had no recollection of what I had or how much of it worked. I tried to play it for about 10 minutes and shut it off.
Yeah, was looking for a review from you guys on Valkyria Chronicles 4 to know if it’s worth a pick up, when I didn’t see it i figured it may not be worth it on switch
This is out of left field but, the ad read? Opening the fridge, looking in there only to close it and walk away. Doing that for an hour. I thought I was the only one.
I completely agree about the recap feature for RPGs, especially very long ones. There are quite a few games I had to stop playing for a while then had no choice but to start again from scratch when I came back to them because I had completely forgotten what had happened...
Hey mark do you think you might do a "top 5 deck builders on Switch" in future. There's so many, that its difficult to know which ones to wishlist or purchase on sale. Cheers!
The league of gentlemen’s ‘are you local’ is far too accurate for some British pubs. Literally as soon as you walk in you get the meerkats popping their heads up.
P5R does have a story recap thing-a-me-bob in the Settings tab, I think, Mark. Clicked the Hello Fresh link, natch 😇 Good luck to you guys, for ever and beyond!
Your take on Persona 5 makes me very happy with Dragon Quest 11 S - when you load the game up after a long time away, the game tells you what you were doing when you last played! It is SO refreshing because you can pick it up at any time and not be lost.
The day the switch up Xenoblade chronicles 3 review has hit mythological proportions and I can only assume that when the review comes out will also the day half life 3 is confirmed!
This could be the week I finally pick up Cassette Beasts. A game that’s better than it has ever been and at its cheapest ever price, no brainer really.
Was on the fence about cassette beasts, grew up on pokemon back in the day but fell out of it, cassette beasts is on of the best games I played recently, one those “I wish i could erase my memory and play it back from scratch again” type of games
Love the Valkyria games. Some very fun strategy. The story is an interesting alternate universe ww2 kind of thing in a tasteful anime style (without being overly cute thankfully, I can get sick from that). And in todays geopolitical context, the story is extra relevant. Dont miss out on the first game either, it's just as good.
Unicorn Overlord is awesome! I’m still playing it, 90 hours now, hoping to finish the story this week. A bit too long for me as I don’t have too much spare time to play, however I enjoy every bit of the game. Glad it’s on sale so accessible to more people.
@@SwitchUpYt like huge sale is ok but i have watchlist on DD and no notification came. So sale is not that interesting in this case. But I might try new game from this video, dont worry 😁
I picked up Unicorn Overlord this week. I'd been waiting for a sale, and while I would have liked a bigger discount, 25% is more than I was expecting for a first time sale. It's definitely damaging my productivity and my already considerable backlog :D
Thanks, your videos never dissapoint. Really looking forward to the Switch 2 release, there are so many games out there that are unplayable on the console, or could use some upgrades
I must know the synth/techno music that starts @2:10 , if you know please let me know! Also, your videos are the only ones worth watching on getting a real review of games for the switch! Keep it up!
Good to see the weird and wonderful Catherine getting some attention, I enjoyed that one tremendously! Also like the look of Hauntii, looks very… jauntii…
Warhammer 40k Mechanicus has one of the best OST that there are. Since I finished it, if I go into Warhammer 40k universe with the other game I play that soundtrack just to put me in the mood.
Glad to be a "local" when it comes to saveloy selection. Speaking of which, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger and Masters of Anima or both AMAZING deals! CoJ was the first game I got on my Switch, and MoA is also extremely well done. Get both of these for the price they're at!
I had already picked up the AC mega bundle when it went on sale like 2 months ago I think. Currently playing AC: Brotherhood, already completed my playthroughs of AC rebel collection & AC 3. It is a good thing I saved the best for last in this AC bundle pack by going through AC Ezio collection as the last and final journey into the AC switch collection port experience.
Hauntii looks interesting. I might have to watch some reviews. Also, I definitely agree about more games needing a "summary of the game so far" feature. The number of games I've restarted after getting distracted and coming back to them months (or even years) later, only to have no clue what I'm doing, is mind blowing. Because of this, I rarely end up finishing games - especially longer, often well rated RPGs - even if I quite enjoy the time I spend with them.
Thanks for the sales. I too would appreciate some form of a recap feature for really long games like Persona, Xenoblade, etc. Most of us have to take a break sometimes. I hope you go back and complete it.
My recent sale pick ups were : Blasphemous for $6.24 until June 2nd Minecraft Physical Copy for $14.99 until June 5th And Metal Slug X for $3.99 until May 30th Pretty set for the next while I'd say 👍
I have to put my phone down and use headphones for my game otherwise I absolutely will lose focus and check my phone and scroll shorts or whatever. My attention span has been destroyed. Haunti seems pretty cool and looks like a good game for the oled
My playthrough of the original Bravely Default is lasting years as I keep drifting away and then coming back… story-wise you can recap easily enough using the journal in the menu, I find the issue is that I forget about the actual gameplay mechanics! So I’d also add a “gameplay reminder” feature to that story recap feature onto the wish list!
Thinking about the story recap idea.... The Witcher 3 does this really well, by way of a little narrated comic that plays everytime you are loading into the game! Very handy!
A word of caution if anyone wants to buy WRC 9 or is looking forward to the WRC Collection. The game received a patch at some point in the past that disables all of mechanical damage. Only tires wear out. If you hit a wall full speed nothing gets damaged. No matter the setting. Simulation or not. Makes no sense to play the game and sadly Nintendo does not acknowledge refund requests :(
Guys, play Casette Beasts! You like monster taming games? Play it. You like interesting stories and characters? Play it. You want something truly weird and special? Play! It!
Etrian Odyessy 2 and 3 are on sale for $20 each; picked up the third one since I never got around to playing it. Phantom Doctrine looks interesting too.
Bundles AND savaloys? You're really treating us this week! Two Point Hospital IS amazing! A definite pickup if anyone doesn't have it already. I'm picking up Cassette Beasts, because I need that in my life and I'm happy it's running well now.
