Perhaps not use the lid as a palette. Keep the lid and rim clean. I use a saran wrap (cling film) folded over double which works for me. When I shake the lid stays clean. I have to change the plastic at about 1/2 empty. Less mess and waste. Love playing with Amaco and mixing with other brands as well. Great video. I just subscribed.

Beautiful work Lois. On your midnight skies works was it just obsidian, smokey Merlot and Oatmeal? Was there another glaze involved? Thank-you!
@LoisHook
@LoisHook 4 года назад
Janet Bice no just obsidian x3. Smokey merlot say 2 to 3 coats at rim then with one being lower to graduated. Then smokey Merlot round the rim inside and out and thick. facebook.com/585673183/posts/10158738728993184/?d=n This link is a Facebook post with a finished pot. What were the layer breakdowns for your midnight skies?
@LoisHook
@LoisHook 2 года назад
Hi. 3 4 in base of the inside with obsidian. (4 as I like a solid black) Smokey Merlot over what you want to turn Maroon. Thick round the rim with oatmeal thick over. Then where the oatmeal was you get the blue and the image of a midnight skies. I’m sure if you look at one of may later video o talk about oatmeal and show it again.

@CarisseH
@CarisseH 4 года назад
@@LoisHook Maybe you can have a bowl of water deep enough for the lid to be submerged upside down and then let it soak for a few minutes. You don’t need a lot of water, just a couple of centimeters. I think it should work out for you.

How's many layers of glaze do you typically do? I follow Amaco guidance with 2 layers + 1 layer but find it's still so see through/you can see the brush strokes
@LoisHook
@LoisHook 3 года назад
David Pottrell in a one colour glaze where I’m not layering. There would be three layers. I typically can do one in top of the other almost immediately on bisque but then have to let dry to put the third on. If a base colour then layers on top I seem to always do three coats first that the moment then the top layers. So if an obsidian base it will still be three layers. Then say smokey merlot on top third two layers then maybe a third round the rim. Then oatmeal really thick round the rim and maybe brushed into the bowl for example so that is 6 layers. You have to watch your not putting any colours that are likely to run near the bottoms of layering. Keep to the top third of the bowl etc. Hope that helps.

I love these combos, I was able to have a friend listen to get the glazes and order of procedure. Question on ancient copper. I am in a studio but don’t get to control the kiln. Since it needs the hottest part, where should I have them place it. When I asked there is no hot spots, and there is a slow cool down. Wasn’t sure if it should be at the top middle or bottom to try and get it hotter. I’m certain they don’t reach cone 7. Loved the bowl, I think your order was textured amber brown (friend wasn’t sure if that’s what you said and I definitely can’t hear, then seaweed, then emerald forest over the seaweed and amber brown. Then blue stone at the rim inside and outside then oatmeal thick inside, not thick outside. Also since you have tried amaco, a great combo is Steven hills mystery magic (top only, with maroon over it with 3 layers. I’d show a pic but don’t know how on this. Thanks a ton.

I had terrible results on ancient copper in the community kiln but at my home kiln I got great results. The other colors are always less vibrant in the community kiln also. Low airflow might have been the culprit.
