Im an atheist but im so fascinated by Edwards old testament rightfulness. I don't agree with it but but i love the commitment and i really appriciate their music.
I love him too, but I'm also a Calvinist, used to be an atheist and he actually puts a raw visceral face on his belief, it's not some bullshit like South Park mocked. It's brutal. Raw. It is real.
It would be absurd to argue whether god is real or not in this case. It seems evident, that for DEE it's not a matter of whether he want's to make his music, but rather that he has to. I even envy his strong belief, where doubt doesn't seem to be an issue. It's impossible not to be touched by the strenght in his belief in god. I can't come to think of any other musician where the nescessity seems so obvious.
From what I've heard, he's not a judgmental kind of Christian. Someone said he seemed prettu "universalist" in an interview. Not sure the interview. He did grow up around a "fire and brimstone" travelling preacher grandfather, and he definitely distills that American Gothic into his music perfectly.
