My battery has been draining so fast the last couple months, went from 100% to 89% with 128 Cycle count in like the last 3 months of use. I've had it since December. I've had a weird thing happen to it, where I left it charging with the magsafe charger for like 3 days because I didn't use it and when I came to use it, it was burning hot and didn't turn on until I let it cool down a bit and that was the time where it went down to 99% and continued dropping

I am waiting out for the refresh of the MacBook Pro to replace my 2018 15" model but I am torn between dropping down to a 14" or going with the 16". I always found my 15" a bit annoyingly big to sit on the sofa and use so I almost always use it plugged into a monitor up in my study and it works great that way. I do take it with me when I need to but I never just grab it to go work on the sofa or in the garden like I used to when I had a 13" Windows laptop. So I like the idea of the 14" model but part of me makes me think I will regret it if I get that when my normal use is at a desk where the size doesn't matter much 🤔

I’m about to buy a 16” M1 MacBook Pro to replace my 9-yr-old 13” MacBook Air - it’s had 2 water spills over the years, and still going, just the battery is getting tired and can’t be replaced here in Australia. Amazing integrity, these machines!

I am in the same situation, just apparently 11 months later. I just got a 16" M1 Pro. Hopefully I made the right call as the new M3s just came out. I replaced the battery of my Air with one I found on Ebay. It was never the same, though, it gives me 2 hours tops! and sometimes it will die suddently. I decided to move on and get a new laptop :) How has it worked for you so faR?
@KerrieRedgate
@KerrieRedgate 5 месяцев назад
@@crunchchannel8788 Hi, I’m at 2 minds about my 16” M1 MBP - though, I did buy a refurbished model (Apple is sooooo expensive in Australia). The screen is great, the speakers are fabulous. The fans have rarely ever engaged at all, and when they did, they were very quiet, hardly noticeable. The webcam is weird, as many people have commented about the new Apple computers - it sort of makes the skin look a bit pasty like an avatar (but I still look super-narrow on the webcam! Not great for me!) But I frankly (and sadly) prefer my old Mid-2013 MacBook Air for actual hands-on work. Was the best computer I’ve ever owned, since 1986. I’m finding with the keys merging with their surrounds on the keyboard (as with all MBPros), I’m getting extra characters popping up on the screen now. (I’m not a great typist anymore). And I’m struggling with this trackpad. I don’t understand the advantage of the deep click (I felt it too much in my shoulder so shut it off), and sometimes the cursor doesn’t disengage and things are sliding all over the screen, with files opening everywhere. I’ve tried all sorts of adjustments, but not happy yet, after almost a year. I do some web design work, and I’m usually a whizz with the trackpad - I don’t like using a mouse (my fingers are faster than my wrist - musician). But this is so hard. I cannot feel any click under my thumb while my fingers are zooming around with the graphics. So I’m pressing too hard…. But not everyone will be using a trackpad like this. So I might try the Genius Bar for help now. But i think it’s just the new design. The M1 iMac I tried first was the same with the magic trackpad (sent back). Mind you, it is blazingly fast at calculating the astronomical positions of over 24,700 asteroids AND sorting them in zodiac order!! So, for my work and research, that’s great. But I am struggling with just how many apps and things I normally use that won’t work on Silicon, including my beloved (2016) 96K Apogee MiC. So, it’s a mixed reaction from me! I hope you’re doing well with yours. Some of my work is just too specialised, I think.

@Alex I would try calibrating the battery. Not sure what Apple's official stance is but I often run the batteries down to 0 and charge them back up, with the computer running so that it can learn the upper and lower limits of the battery. I see this with PC laptops and that usually fixes it.

I am not completely sure what is going on with your charge cycles vs max. capacity! I have a 14" MBP bought on release last year and a similar use case (work from home software dev with occasional coffee shop working) - I have 79 charge cycles but I am still 100% capacity. The only difference I can think of is that I use the bundled magsafe charger - could it be that on periods of peak load your dock passthrough charger can't provide enough power and you start to use the battery a little?

Due to my work I'm surrounded by 30+ Apple Silicon Macbooks and I've noticed a pattern of increased battery loss for colleagues using high wattage chargers. Users charging with the 67w charger put a lot less stress on their batteries than those using the 140w or 96w chargers with a similar cycle count it would seem. As always users should try to limit the amount of time the batteries spend at 100% too, I use Al Dente to limit the battery to 75% charge and tell the software to charge to full if I know I'm going to be out all day. Although with the ARM chipsets you still get insane usage time out of a 75% charge.

Regarding the battery: If you keep this thing plugged in and charged to 100% all the time, the battery will die rather quickly. Install something like aldente and keep it to max 80%, and only charge it to 100 if you really need it. It's common knowledge. Apple "sort of" does this already with optimized charging turned on. All EVs charge to 80% max by default, requiring an override to go to 100%, many even showing a warning saying something like "don't do this, unless you need the range".

I use my Macbook Air M1 since 1,5 years and the battery health also dropped to 87%. Most of the time I use the Air with a USB-C Monitor. I tired the Software AlDente to Limit the battery recharge to 80% but it does not seem to help. The software has also a battery refresh program but only in the paid version. Probably i will try it soon.

Interesting that you called out the power capacity...after 130 cycles I'm at 92% which surprised me. I wonder whether it's because I'm keeping it constantly charged when in use and empty whenever it's not
@dzmitry5697
@dzmitry5697 Год назад
In terms of the battery. Your are right, it's because of 100% battery charging (and using it plugged-in). I'm using my MacbookPro 16 M1 Max for about 5 months and my capacity 100% (13 cycle counts). But I'm using AlDente Free 1.19 (you can take a Pro version as well). I have added charge limit to 50%, so once 50% reached - charging stopped and I'm using macbook via adapter. 30-50% of charging is ideal for li-ion battery. In cases when I need to use macbook unplugged, I just charging it to 100% and using it without power adapter.
@neetop1557
@neetop1557 Год назад
Now ask yourself why does Apple not allow for setting the max charging limit natively - answer because they know you'll have to pay them to replace the battery or get a new laptop. I had an MBP where I had to replace battery 3 times during its 6year lifetime, due to it getting swollen. I kept it plugged in all the time sitting at 100% charge and it used to run a couple of 4k screens - meaning a lot of heat build up. It was cheaper to replace the battery but the cost was still outrageous since these batteries are glued in.

Definitely I agree with you. My cycles count is 98 and my battery health is 100%. I haven't dropped the battery below 30% since I got the computer. I don't let it stay more than 1 day at 100% full. I've been using aldente for a long time and I usually set it to 70%.

@dzmitry5697 Год назад
@@berkehankucukaras really cool! By the way I have the same flow with iPhone. Unfortunately iPhone doesn't have any solution to control the charge limits, but I'm trying to keep it between 80-20% of battery and after almost 3 years iPhone 11 Pro still has 100% battery capacity. It's not an easiest way for a consumer but if you want to keep your battery healthy - very good way to go.

5:57 that's because batteries HATE being at 80+% or below 20%, I suggest AlDente (open source) with it you can cap how much % should be charged. I set mine to 50% and my battery sits at 42 cycles and 99% capacity after a year.

Frequent charging-s between 80-100% take a major toll on Lithium-Ion batteries. It's the topping off that they don't like and it's where they get forced and heat up. This happens to everyone that mostly keeps their laptops docked in. You can either limit the charging to 75-80% when plugged in, or plug out when reaching 80%. So far I haven't found a charge % limiter on Macbooks. Dells have it in the BIOS and Win tools.

LG Ultrafine charging is killing your battery. Many people described it and I noticed it when I came back to my MacBook after a day and it was all warm, i.e. charging! No fix till now, other than when you plug in the original brick, it will automatically switch to that and the problem disappears. Beats the fun of docking though.

Does your dock give your MacBook all of the juice it needs, especially when you are doing "real work"? I've read that it's better to use MagSafe as it's guaranteed to fully power your MacBook, whereas some docks/USB-C chargers don't putting more strain on the battery. Not sure if this is true though. Maybe this is why your capacity is down to 87%?

I think the new(ish) feature for optimized charging only pauses the charging at 80% for a little bit. It will eventually charge to 100%. This whole feature is meant to analyse your 'charging habits' and then guess when you usually unplug it and than just pause the charging at 80% for a while. My macbook is not even a year old and I just noticed its 96% already... my older macbook battery did definitely not degrade that fast...
@mikelovesbacon

If you're using it plugged in most of the time, or just have weird habits that Optimised Battery Charging can't learn, you can turn it off and use Al Dente for manual control. I limit charge to 75% unless I know I'm going to need more.

Big thanks for this opinion. About your battery. This is a problem for all MBP16 which have this big battery which is artificially enlarged or should Insay is not made to last. Look at you Intel MBP16. I have an almost 2.5yr old MBP16 and the battery is at 300 cycles and 83%. Given that Apple claims 1000 cycles above 80% this looks like a reason for warranty claims.
