Splicing 16 strand ropes is fairly straight forward, but there's some practices that I've adopted that have saved me hours of frustration. Please drop any tips of your own in the comments below!

Great info! I love 16 strand ropes being an older climber. There's something very satisfying about them..

Hey there, what kind of whipping or stiching is the best to use on 16 strand eye splice? Thank you.

I definitely prefer to use the Teufelberger Whip stitch style, just because of how it looks. The Samson standard lock stitch is plenty good, it’s just not as cosmetically pleasing. It can be whip locked the same way you would any other climbing line

Hello. I'm wondering if sometimes the splicing process can leave a stiff and slightly thicker diameter area of rope about 2 feet from the eye?. I have a brand new spliced eye marlow gecko 2 blue ocean 13mm rope and the "stiff" area is probably more like 14mm diameter and is about 25cm long. Very odd and can't find any information about it. Anyone have any idea?

Was it factory spliced? That definitely points to a very poorly calculated taper overlap. Not a safety issue usually just a poorly executed splice.

@treespicemedia Thank you for getting back to me. Yes it is factory spliced. I used it with a hitch climber set up yesterday as secondary to choke on to a thin bendy stem and it wouldn't pass through the VT so couldn't really get it to feel comfortable. Good test of balance though!. I have 11.7mm treehog rope (which is actually teufelberger drenaline according to the compliance certificate) as my main line so it's fine. It's just so odd it was sold like that it's very bloody noticeable!

How fast could you do one of these if you’re not recording?? This is awesome!

Most usually take an hour, multiple in a row definitely get quicker.

Hi, very good video 👍 but missing core bury part 😅 Are all 16 strand ropes spliced this way? No core in the eye? Thank you 👍 Keep making them videos 🤙 you are good 👌

Samson 16 strands do not require any core in the splice, they depend entirely on the cover, however, other brands like Courant are different. The Courant 16 strand is much more core dependent and requires the involvement of the core in the splice. I believe Teufelberger ropes follow the same rules as Samson, but it’s best to follow the manufacturer recommendations.

@@treespicemedia courant is the reason I asked. Where could I get instructions for courant?

You skipped over and edited out the actual work and difficulty of this eye splice. It’s not overly complicated but it does take particularity, determination and effort to get it to final bury without the help of hydraulics. Not a true tutorial and representation on how to actually achieve the splice.

We’ll it wasn’t supposed to be a tutorial on how to splice 16 strand. My intention was to offer some tips to people splicing this rope. I’d be happy to post a full video. For Samson and Teufelberger 16 strands the splice is very easy and does not require and excessive force. You may be referring to Yale or maybe Marlow had some pretty crazy 16 strand style splices that involve the core. Those Marlow splices can be very difficult to balance properly. When I’ve spliced Samson 16 strands it’s way faster and easier than standard double braids if you do it properly.
