This was a workout! I made 6 of these in a row all varying from 21 to 23 inches wide. I needed a break from throwing for a little bit after these. All 6 turned out beautiful. I only wish I wasn't throwing these on a contract basis for another potter that day. But I can and will make some like them for myself very soon!

Just a thought... I've found it advantages the majority of time heating the lip with a heat gun to lock in the roundness. It helps to prevent warping as the clay dries. I'll also cover the pot with plastic for a few days... also to prevent warping. Admittedly warping can still become an issue.

Watched this countless times Matthew. mainly to get `info and technique` on centering and `staying` centered throughout the whole process. As an amazing potter of course you make it all look so easy! hehe. Thank you for sharing your work with us.

Lost count how many times I've watched this Matthew. You sure do have a great control over the clay.

I think mason staining each block and then trim it and see what you get. Perhaps shades of blue or black and greys?

Do you find standing to throw large pieces, helps with control?
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 5 лет назад
I throw standing and sitting depends on what I am throwing and how I feel. Taller things I almost always sit to throw.

Impressive piece! What is the price for the bowl?
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 5 лет назад
I was making that bowl for Ray Pottery but I do make one similar to that size for myself. That size usually goes for $300 and up depending on the size and design. Apologies for such a delay in responding.

Cool bowl, you could make very big salad in a bowl like that!

Just caught your video. That was an impressive demo. My question is about your outer hand position (right hand) when you begin pulling the wall up. Because of the camera angle your right hand is behind the bowl which makes it impossible to your hand position, and whether or not you are using just your hand, sponge or rib. Great video. I apologize for the camera angle. I would love to have multiple cameras to film all angles. I use a sponge in my right hand while pulling. I wet the inside and outside slightly before pulling and use the wet sponge to help keep the outside moist while grabbing as much clay as possible. Thanks for watching. I'll be uploading more videos soon. Cheers!

what type of roller are you using on the rim of the bowl at the end of the video clip?
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 5 лет назад
That's a design roller that I believe was purchased from Aftosa

Using your palm to open is news to me. Oh, to be 20 years younger. I see a number of times where the piece is out of true, oftentimes because you don't take the time to ease off slowly, and like a ninja you just attack again and re-center. Do you rely on your strength or timing to do that?
@m_craft4766
@m_craft4766 8 лет назад
It definitely is a combination of the two. I strive to get it centered and keep it that way but if not I have found I can often re-center slightly while pulling if I do it just right and depending on the consistency of the clay. This size bowl is a more recent accomplishment so I'm looking forward to improving on these in the coming years!
