@@miguelvalsassina4547 true, but he was still Brazilian, he only got the Portuguese nationality when Portugal bought him to play for the national team...😉😉
Yes, today the VAR would review all those bad fouls and the ref repeatedly runs to the monitor to check that. So this game here would have ended up 7 vs. 7 or less ;)
The ref made this game go wild when he decided to give only a yellow to the Dutch player after he karate kick Ronaldos leg, should be a red and the game would be under control after that
It was another time in football. You just watch the premier league at the beginning 2000 and this is absolutely normal yellow cards. Now you get a yellow card only when you touch a player (or look to Neymar eyes)
@@felina7849 Some of these are actually really vicious hits. Idk if you've ever actually played men's league football, but taking steel cleets at high speed to the thigh for example can cause serious short term damage. Some of these were for sure dramatic or fake but half of them were quite unpleasant hits.
@@liamhackston2507 how can he control players behaviour? Portugal chose to avenge Ronaldo, Netherlands also didnt back down and ref couldnt do nothing about it.
@@liamhackston2507 easier said than done. man you sound stupid. have you ever been in a situation where you think it will all be fine, but later found out its waaay far from being controllable?
@@diollinebranderson6553 I mean, I am a referee so I do know what I'm talking about. I'm not saying he's a bad ref. I'm saying he had a bad game, and should have done better
The only reason this happened was because of the Dutch, either they bought the referee or he had some sort of selective blindness. Dutch team started the game trying to take CR off the pitch or incapacitate him with incredibly obvious and dangerous fouls. The referee decided to ignore all those attempts and so the Portuguese decided to retaliate. It's that simple.
No not really. Back in the day Netherlands had just aggressive defenders and they had BETTER TEAM THAN PORTUGAL. So I don't see why they would try that. Ronaldo wasn't very big too, already.
@@mcj2219 What you think and what actually happened are two very different things. This is not my opinion, it's facts. Instructions were given to foul CR off the pitch whether you believe it or not. Trying to argue otherwise with out a clue, won't change reality. PS: Don't bother replying, instead of trying to argue facts just because you don't 'feel' like it, go do your homework instead.
2nd tackle on Ronaldo would be a straight red and min 2 game suspension in today's game. Absolute filth, how Ronaldo's career didn't end after this smashing is unreal
I mean players have taken challenges like that many times over the years and not had career-ending injuries. Then again, that’s a fun thought. What if Ronaldo’s career had ended in 2006? We’d have never know what we would be missing out on!
You don’t get matches like these anymore. Was truly wonderful to watch. Full of passion, energy and excitement. Wish more games were played in this manner.
Agreed, but a ref can recover from a poor decision in a big game with quality verbal control. I feel like that was lacking, and that he didn't look confident in his decisions, which leads to more incidents.
The second yellow should have been straight red. A couple of weak calls, like the hand ball. Sometimes games fall apart and both teams decide to have a stupid contest. As a Referee it’s a tough position and all you can do is penalize the flagrant fouls while keeping the game going and the clock running
To Lance Campbell: If this can happen in Euro/South Am football in 2006, the ballet-pretty-boys wouldn't survive the battle of the British League in the 1960s and '70s days of yore where even yellow cards were rare, considering: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v4zntE8oXR8.html
I remember this match, already had the beginning I was shocked. Like, did they forgot they have to play a sport and it's not hunting man? Like, that was me in the first football games, where there was only pass and tackle to push to play..!
Me too. I remember watching with my cousin and commenting on the irony of the the red - carded players sat together on the stairways like buddies. The final was a snoozefest, decided by a header from a corner. Worst way to win any match, let alone a final
I remember this game… At the end, the coach of Portugal (Luis Felipe Scolari) wanted to punch the coach of Netherlands. What a fight in the pitch! After this game Portugal trained players like Pepe.
