That was crazy to me. They not only believed in him, they scientifically *knew* he could do it even if magnus wasn’t sure he could. The intuitional inner body knowledge of these body focused athletes never ceases to amaze me.
@@KING_PHILLIPabsolutely! By no means belittling it, but most men can deadlift 225lbs… so them seeing Magnus unable to just lift the weight you know Magnus is not lifting it with the right leverage.
Hey @jujimufu , does magnus have less of an advantage lifting the stone due to lack of stomach/chest mass? When Martins says let your arms assist the stone up your midsection- comparative to you two- he has *no* midsection 😅 Much love to all three of you! You’re all the best at what you do!❤
Yeah that advice, and the camaraderie is what got him over the top. Extremely impressive to see that. I felt it in my bones! People think that strong man competitions are just low IQ pure strength things, when really it's highly complex puzzle solving under great stress.
The really specific coaching to get his feet aligned correctly so he could really get the full strength from his legs and back just had me grinning from ear to ear. I started getting powerlifting training after a few years of being really intimidated by lifting in general, and that feeling of having a coach who actually knows what they're talking about, is incredibly supportive, but also recognizes when to push you was something that I had never experienced in my life up to that point. Easily breaking 4 plates (405lbs/180kg) for reps on a lift for the first time with the help of some very specific coaching tuned to my size (6'7/2m tall) and body after struggling to do less than half of that on my own for fear of injury is still something that sticks with me years later.
@@ThunderChunky101 "People think that strong man competitions are just low IQ pure strength things" Who does that? I've spoken to plenty of people about strong men and not one of them say this, most of them will say that people who are at the top of anything will have a good idea of what they are doing. You wouldn't think Floyd Mayweather was a low-IQ person because he's at the top, same with Erling Haaland, Casper Ruud, Lebron James and so on..
Weight lifters are, for the most part, very very enthusiastic about watching others grow. Ego is looked down upon in rooms where a fist fight could easily end in death 😅
@@KING_PHILLIPDespite the capitalist societal norms that you get taught ideologically, disciplines where you do not directly compete against others, but rather against yourself and your ego, do see way less conflict and toxicity. You don't get anything from wishing others to fail, it doesn't make you lift that stone which last time you couldn't. Supporting each other leads to an atmosphere of solidarity where eventually everyone will profit from. One of the many reasons why sports are political, in a good way, and society could very well learn from it.
To see Magnus really "learn from the front" with activity that's not in the realm he's used to, and then seeing him succeed and really celebrate something as raw as finding a new challenge is super exciting. I love it!
7:44 This was by far my favorite moment. From magnus telling himself he couldn't do it and giving up, to his friends beside him that knew and believe that he CAN do it, telling him not to give up. After which he actually succeeded!! I was actually so happy for him that he got it! You might think you know your limits, your friends know it better
But it just came down to his form. His friends knew his form was off so if magnus knew the form right away he wouldn’t of even doubted himself because he would of lifted it first try. But either way they are good at pushing him like on that atlas stone
@@Ufunny20 shame his form never got better and he as risking serious back and leg injury for views. i'd never have a friend max out on a new exercise, especially one as difficult and dangerous as stones. there's nothing wrong with rounded back exercises - if you know how to do them.
Martiiiins is such a good guy and he is really good at giving instructions. I think it comes from him being very focused on efficient movement in his own training. There are lots of training videos where he explains both how and why he trains like he does. He is The professor of Strongman.
Pros know a lot about what they themselves do, they're hyper focused in their training, there's no "meh, let's just half-ass it" if you want to be the best. The strongest man, shit, that'll get you in the book of history.
7:45 this is what it's all about, when a man says he can't do something, but he's got the right people to support him who believe he can, and suddenly what seemed so far away, with a few adjustments of technique became possible, that positivity can't be found in many places in the world. That's true strength.
Dude I felt so great when Magnus started jumping in excitement after getting that stone over the bar... Just seeing him proud of his accomplishment like that had me cheering with him
When you are this strong, you can get away without the proper form, your strength will be sufficient enough to handle it, but i seriously enjoyed how much attention he gave on the little details and mechanics. Magnus is a dream student but he was an excellent teacher as well.
What a spectacularly good coach. He watches, identifies a method of improvement that works specifically for his trainee and communicates it both verbally and demonstratively. No coddling, nothing condescending, just facts and results.
07:32 I thought it was interesting how Martins and Juji instantly saw that Magnus was capable of lifting that whereas to me (a person with very little weightlifting experience) that first attempt looked like it was nowhere close to happening. Not that it's surprising that they could see it, they're clearly experts at what they do, but it's cool to think about how we're looking at the same thing but making totally different assumptions based on that.
bro people who are actually able to know instead of just blindly encouraging that someone CAN actually lift the weight with proper form are something i have never seen for myself before. Whoever this big dude is he is a gem
What I like about magnus is his grit. Given the size of his frame (bones not muscles), lifting that stone was epic. His mental game is literally his greatest strength. Very impressive.
I'm Canadian so when it comes to strongman I cheer for folks like Mitchell Hooper, JF Caron, and Maxime Boudreault. This video was an immediate click for me though because I've really liked Licis for a while now, and I think he's incomparably good at teaching. The videos he's done with other channels about the mechanics of deadlifting helped me improve my lifts by about 10% almost immediately. Licis always comes across as knowledgeable, supportive, and gentlemanly. 100% deserves all the respect he gets.
7:58 pretty cool seeing how much technique can improve your strength. Magnus thought it impossible before a few slight corrections. His surprise he could do it was so genuine.
One thing i have to complement anytime i see it is jujis ability to be a hype man almost in the videos cheering you on, jumping around, congratulating you, but he's never in the way, or taking the focus away, its just pure support and wishing you Magnus to do well. At least thats whats coming across to me in the videos your in, and its why i love watching when your all working together
I think it's really on rare occasions seeing you Magnus with such a happy spontaneous outburst of laughing... I really felt the joy you had in lifting that stone...😊... that's the moments one remembers I think...
The absolute honesty in Magnus' face when he said he couldn't do the 420 lb farmers walk was awesome. He is human. And then to break through a barrier that was previously "impossible" for him was awesome to see.
Been watching your videos for a few months and I love the energy and the positivity you share through it. I also went back to working out and seeking a climbing gym thanks to your videos ! Thanks for everything and keep the good work 💪👌
