On July 11th 1864, CSA General Early continued his advance on Washington DC. After Monocacy, Early moved to Rockville MD and positioned his Corp to make a attempt to breakthrough the thin defenses of Washington. The rest of Union 6th Corp under General Wright arrived in Washington to reinforce the northern edge particularly at Fort Stevens as Early was positioned just to the north at Silver Spring MD. Historically Early thought better to not attack and skirmisher with the Union troops before taking leave with his raids bounty back to Virginia.
