The impact of farming on nature is one of the most contested subjects. The negative impact on biodiversity and soil health is juxtaposed with food security and benefits to certain species of wildlife. But does it have to be one or the other? Join me for the conversation with Suzanna Crampton who is one of the most recognisable figures in Irish agriculture. She graduated from Sterling College in Vermont, where she studied agricultural and environmental sciences and learned about farming that works with nature, not against it.
I was delighted to accept Suzanna’s invitation to her farm to record this episode in person rather than online like most of the episodes. We started the day with a walk around the farm where she shared her encyclopedic knowledge of nature, explaining how the lifecycles of different species of plants and animals create complex natural processes. I also had the opportunity to meet the 'girls,' as Suzanna fondly refers to her famous flock of dark brown Zwartbles sheep.
It would likely take a substantial blog post to describe all the wonderful and interesting things that Suzanna showed me on her farm before we sat down in her office to record the podcast. It would take another blog post to talk about Suzanna’s many other talents, as she’s also an accomplished writer, photographer and woollen blanket designer, among other things. After listening to this episode I encourage you to visit the Zwartbles Ireland website where you can learn more about Suzanna’s farm and her work.

Man watching this was hard. What an absolute self-restraint hell. I would have already given in after less than 5 minutes and snatched the cat (ofc it had so sleep in the center of everything 😂) and the dogs and petted them like there is no tomorrow. 😂😂 When the "sheep are destroying the environment" line dropped I instantly had to think of some individuals I met on social media and irl but we have a saying here: "The amount makes the poison." I don't know why people find it so hard to get rid of the black & white mentality. Edit: We need more people like Suzanna. Also she is right about the whole tomato thing. I partially use the manure of my quail to fertilize my vegetables and the tasted way much better than what I have gotten from anyone else this year.

Thanks for watching, Levia! I think it's inherent to social media platforms to be as black/wite as possible. That gives plenty of opportunities for people to be angry which is the whole point of social media. At least most of it. As for the cat - I think I'll cut a promo video with the cat to exploit the virality factor of cat-videos! 😜

Yeah, the good old rage bait. Some of my relatives and former colleagues fall for that as well but I am slowly hammering that out of them (almost literally). As for the cat content: That would certainly earn a few clicks but I doubt the pets are the only virality factor here. 😜 @@TommysOutdoors

Don't worry. Don't need cats or dogs to get me to click. ;) But they are a nice bonus. 🤣 @@TommysOutdoors

Hi Tommy. I tried to comment on this video a few times but it seems to disappear even though it appears after I press comment. Going to do a little test here...

great interview. Another farmer who should be teaching classes in UCD... I was also struck by the part of the conversation about the protector dogs. We had a tragedy in Spain a few weeks ago. The first I've ever heard of. a woman was killed by a pack of 5 shepherd dogs, though the hypotheses are that the dogs were not fed enough and were therefore half starved, or that she was close to pups hidden in a hedgerow. The owner will be charged with "Imprudent Homicide"

I can see your comment as well as the other one from 17 hours ago.

Oh shit! This stuff is real and the point Suzanna made about the insurance was indeed great and I'm surprised not so much that it's not often mentioned as that I have never heard or thought about it before!

@@TommysOutdoors it won't keep up any reply with the link to the news story." Muere una mujer tras ser atacada por los perros de un pastor en un pueblo de Zamora" is the headline.
