WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

Very nice point fella. Please don't start editing your videos. I enjoy the raw unedited stuff. It's like I'm able to look over your shoulder and see everything you do.

To avoid aluminum dust, have you tried doing it wet? you would get aluminum paste instead of powder

Maybe it's me but I use abraiders and rocks to grind. Don't know if you ever experimented with it, something you like to do, but I like the rock grind better for some reason. Seems I get more consistent strikes with rock. Is it maybe the rock dust helps contact or grab better. I still use both. What do you think Jack?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 10 месяцев назад
Natural rocks are too slow for me. But they are better when abrading the edges of paleo type points during the last finishing stage. Natural rocks seem to "polish" the edges.

Great video!! I agree with @clintevans3886 please don’t start editing your videos. I like the raw videos. It feels like im sitting with you and watching you Knapp and im trying to learn and watch how you move through the biface to get the point. Have you ever tried to Knapp opal? Would you be open to doing a updated video with the camera out in front of you like the viewpoint of someone if they were sitting directly across from you? so we could see how your angling the rock when using indirect percussion?

@@KnapperJackCrafty Thanks! I have seen the one front view you have done. I was just curious if you could do another one. So we can see you encounter different problems to help understand the process better. I’ve been struggling with indirect a bit lately I can’t get long wide flakes. I have watched a lot of your videos. I really am trying to learn your knapping style. It seems the most easy to understand and duplicate (until I put tools to rock lol) I can’t wait to go to a knap in and meet some people and watch it done in person. I feel like it will help me a lot with my knapping. I feel like I got the principles understood but I can’t get my skill dialed in.

@austinlong7700 if you type in " jack crafty gunther" you should see 4 videos. They are all front views. RU-vid used to be better at searches. My apologies.

No but it sure makes it less likely to break for those of us that have to move both hands at the same time. I can't freehand knap anything but on my leg I knap tater chips.

i think jaspers and agates might form in igneous rock where as chert and flint forms in limestone / chalk ? i think that is the main difference unless someone else can enlighten me ?

34:44 would it work for thinning just the thick spots? Are you going to start using the reverse indirect in the usual angle so you don't overly learn the wrong angles and so we can see how it is supposed to look?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 10 месяцев назад
It doesn't work when trying to thin the thick spots. The flakes created aren't long enough, so most lumps aren't completely eliminated. And no, I'm not going to revert to the angle you see in the "India" videos or any other angle. The 90° verical position of the reverse indirect "anvil" is just as good as any other angle when employing the technique. The only problem is the flakes flying into the face of the knapper. But protective eyewear solves this issue. Besides, I get more flake spray from ricochet off of pads and gloves than I do from reverse indirect.
