If you are sailing in the Long Island Sound, these three islands are a MUST SEE: Cuttyhunk, Thimble Islands, and Block Island. In this episode, we review each of the islands based on 1) Cruiser Friendliness, 2) Things to Do, 3) Hang Time, and Overall Rating. This is strictly our opinion based on our experience.
After Port Jefferson, we motored over to the Thimble Islands as the seas were flat and the winds nonexistent. We only had one night to spend in the Thimbles so we dropped anchor and jumped in the dinghy, determined to see as much of it as possible. While we didn’t have time to go ashore, we did get around to see the nearby islands and their summer homes. We dreamed of a bit more time to take it all in, but our time was stay was limited. We had places to go and people to see.
The next morning, we took off to Sag Harbor and the South Fork. From Sag, we ventured to Montauk and then from Montauk, we headed out to Block Island. It was the perfect stopover before Newport. Block Island is sailor’s dream location. The harbor has great protection, a strong cruising community, and ample marine services. The island offers amazing hiking, biking, and endless enjoyment, as well as fantastic restaurants. We would have loved to stay longer than two nights, but we were on a schedule. We loved biking the island, hitting all the major highlights in the bike tour. Our favorites were the Animal Farm and the two lighthouses.
Sadly, we took off Block Island long before we desired and headed for Newport, a new destination for us. From friends in Newport, we learned of the island called Cuttyhunk, the only non-private island in the Elizabeth Islands. It’s a tiny island with few cruiser services, however they do have a marina. The island has about 5 miles of roads, most are dirt and the most interesting place to visit is Lookout Hill, the hill where the military built a bunker during WWII, to stand lookout for German submarines. It was a great couple of days at Cuttyhunk, but it was time to no longer delay our trip to Martha’s Vineyard, one of our holy grails and summer destinations.
We have reviewed and rated three amazing islands in the Long Island Sound and you don't want to miss it: Cuttyhunk, Thimble Islands, Block Island. The amazing thing about these three islands is that they are located in three different states and have very distinct cultures. But, the one thing they do share is their incredible beauty and remoteness.
Enjoy the video, our exploration of these three islands, and the information we provide to you as a cruiser or potential cruiser.

NEW TO OUR CHANNEL?
We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our NEW life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we have very little sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia.
So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!
As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures!

Cuttyhunk is wonderful. Stopped there the last two summers from Newport to MVI. It grows on you, but it is more about hang time and not running around. There are some hiking trails and beaches. The oyster bar delivers if you want fresh seafood. We did the pizza as well.

Good review - but I think you overrated The Thimbles. They're novel, and worth seeing the charming houses and islands if in the area in settled weather. But they don't offer much protection from the prevailing SW wind and the islands are all private, so landing isn't an option unless you go to the nearby mainland.
@SailingBlownAway
@SailingBlownAway 2 года назад
That’s a fair point. We were there in great, calm weather so it didn’t cross our minds. You are right about little protection and not being able to go on the islands. Thanks for your feedback!
