When I managed a pet store, one of my favorite encounters was with an elderly, fragile lady who came in with her enormous Rottweiler. She needed a new leash for him - and selected a 1/4" wide nylon leash. Her dog was so well trained he never tugged, pulled or tangled up the leash. She weighed about as little as half of him, but had him under complete, loving control the entire time. Needless to say, they had both attended obedience/companion classes, and it showed.

I have a 160 lb St Bernard who’s exactly this way. In the yard we roped off half of it with garden twine and she has no idea she could easily get through it. She’ll sit on my feet but doesn’t get on the couch or anything. She’ll back up into you and tried putting her butt onto your lap. But she’s happiest to just lay around and watch me watch tv. She’s not a huge fan of long walks or the dog park (too much energy) but LOVES to lay outside when it’s cold outside. We don’t have a fence and she doesn’t even leave the property line. Dogs walking by don’t even notice her. She’s definitely the sweetest and most gentle dog I’ve ever had or been around. Even the vet remarks how well behaved and gentle she is. But she does enjoy rubbing her face on you and the slobber gets ALL over.😂 They are the best dogs.

I 100% agree- training, consistency, and communication are crucial. I've got a Great Dane who's only 16 months old but loose leash walks very well, and when she has infrequent momentary lapses because she sees a child or bird she wants to play with, she responds quickly to verbal corrections and then goes back to walking well, instead of dragging us down the street. She's in the public access training phase of service dog training right now, and she is doing great. A lot of issues are age-specific and pups will outgrow the behavior as long as they have consistent feedback. 99.99% of the time, the issue is with the humans, not with the dog.

We live by the beach and my dog has to wear a life jacket even though all the other pet parents think it's silly. Everyone else sends their dog straight into the water after a ball, and I'm like, whoa! I'm an excellent swimmer and I wouldn't go out that far alone without a swim buoy. If the dog gets into trouble, there's no way you could get to them on time! Most people don't realize how risky it is. If your dog is swimming alone in deep water, then Fido needs a life jacket!
@amalielk
@amalielk Год назад
I saw a video of two golden retrievers bounding out into a lake. Only a few seconds later, one of the dogs suddenly started struggling. The owner ran out and dragged the now lifeless dog to land and had to perform CPR. Luckily, the dog made it, but it was shocking how fast it all happened- and in a quiet lake and a dog bred for swimming. Good on you for making your dog wear a life jacket. A dog who accidentally inhales water or is swept out on a current, won't last long without one.
@samgay9571
@samgay9571 Год назад
@@amalielk glad to hear the dog made it! Dogs are also prone to something called "dry drowning" - they can get water in their lungs but don't show signs of distress until later. So, if a dog experiences a water emergency, also be sure to bring them to a vet after for evaluation after!

The number of them who got golden retrievers, labs, huskies, great Danes, great Pyrenees, etc, is WILD to me. I love how this was handled by the show host, honestly. She was clear and firm about what the ladies needed to change and improve, and didn't make them feel too bad. That drastically increases the chances of the training sticking. For the humans, most importantly! But I love that the trainer let her come to her own realization that she hadn't taught Max the right things when he was small. So wholesome! (Just realized I only remembered the name of the dog, lol. You can tell who I was paying the most attention to!)

I don't agree with never letting him paddle around in the shallow pool. I think Victoria should've taught them a good recall and then still allow him in. I understand being worried about deeper water with an edge he can't get out of himself, but a shallow pond with a low edge or a lake with a beach or something should be fine. He clearly loves the pond and a little kiddie pool isn't going to replace that. It might cool him down, but it's not as exciting. Just work on recall, so you can decide when playtime is over.

Ponds are dangerous when you don't know what's in them. I would agree to a pet friendly pool, but can be very dangerous.

We have a 10 month old Great Pyrenees/Lab and I strongly relate to this but my dad and brothers are all over 6ft tall and we all are training him and he's definitely learning from our other dogs', Bear Gentle Giant he is already bigger than all 3 of our big dogs (pitbull; Blue Heeler/Lab; German Shepherd) but we have a giant fenced in back yard and I'm home all day every day (aside dr appointments or grocery shopping) It's learning on a curve for sure

St. Bernards are giant, but they aren't fighting/guard dogs. They were bred to be super social and helpful, so they act like labradors. They just want to be cuddled and played with. I'm glad Victoria encouraged the mini-pool. Most larger dogs love it!

My heart m e l t e d seeing Mr Maxi's own private swimming pool... Growing up, there was a much *beloved* St. Bernard named, "Butterball," in our family...Living on a large lush vegetable farm...All we kids wanted to do, was play with Butterball because he was so friendly, playful & so much fun...He really loved all us cousins...Some of my favorite childhood memories are times we all went running & trying to keep up with him, & teaching him tricks...God bless Max & his two sweet Moms... 💥 ❤ 💥

I would probably put Max on a life jacket while he gets swimming. And of course teach him to go into the water ONLY on command. In this way Max gets to have fun still and cool down when it's hot. Plus swimming is really good exercise especially for big dogs. So when they get older they can still get exercise without hurting their joints.

Saint Bernards are the sweetest babies, but they are NOT aware of how big they are. XD They love being lapdogs, but you really have to work with them to make sure they don't jump up and accidentally hurt people. It's not their fault, they just want to say hi, but they have no idea how strong or large they are. They are big doofuses. XD

Not sure ifbit should be done, but how nice would it be to upgrade the pool to be a built in pond that's deep enough to swim, but shallow enough to stand in. The pool he got now only goes up to his ankles and I think it would be nice for it to reach his belly. Would be cute to make the pond look like a koi pond with a little deck.

I have a 70 kilo dog and he was my first big dog. My vet tech is a big dog mom and she told me early on that he needed to know I'm the boss. Fast forward and Bernie is my mobility assistance and medical alert service dog. He also does volunteer work with domestic violence victims. He's a frequent flyer and prefers flying over cars. His favorite seat is 1A but he's content with a row as well. He's absolutely the best dog ever and I'm so blessed to have him. He's the epitome of gentle giant . He thinks he's a lap dog but he has excellent manners. He loves being mom to baby kittens!❤❤❤ The first year he was a handful 😂 he thought I was a kite and he was in control of the string. Thankfully, I never got hurt but i took quite a few flying lessons😂😂😂
