16th Giri Deshingkar Memorial Lecture (GDML), titled India in the Chinese Quest for nationalism and Modernity: Perspectives from Chinese Travel Writings, with (Retd) Prof. Kamal Sheel of Chinese language at the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India and Prof. Patricia Uberoi. 'This occasion is also very special for me because I am very fortunate to have known and studied with Prof. Deshingkar. As a teacher and mentor he introduced us to the large turn was of Chinese studies. He was always encouraging and helpful. My lecture and Presentation today concerns, how and why did India matter in Chinese quest for nationalism and Modernity. The presentation is based on two modern Chinese travelogs on India,' Prof. Kamal Sheel.
