16:9 takes you to a real-life ghost town - Kitsault, BC. Find out why this entire Canadian community was abandoned more than 30 years ago. Carolyn Jarvis reports.
+Αγγελική Κουλούρη In the south, prices collapsed under the pressures of the 1982 recession and there was the arrival of molybdenum by-product production from copper mines. The same radical shifts in molybdenum supply and demand that had sent prices soaring were now causing prices to crash. People were out of work, and convoys of moving vans began to work their way in from Terrace, the nearest active city. No jobs, no money = no small town. you can read more on their website www.kitsault.com/about_hist.html
+GreenFuel00 Can you afford the property tax? And what happens if you fall, and break your leg? Where is the nearest Medi-vac helicopter, or staffed hospital?
And here we are in 2016. I'm glad that guy decided to use his fortune to bring a town back to life. Im one of those people who believe that all old things should be preserved or in this case, brought back to life. It makes me want to move to Kitsault now :)
the suburban town I grew up in still has the 70s 80s décor and infrastructure but with fast food restaurants and, service stations... etc being updated with in the past 10 to 15 years or so
Fresh Impact Co. you're right, I think that whole artist community was just for the cameras, as he is pushing hard now to try build a LNG pipeline/seaport.
Probably his personal pet project. Like some artist, there are works for sale and a few that are not for sale due to personal reason. He probably already have lots of pharmacies and properties that generate enough money to start this personal project.
Hmmm....A nice vacation spot perhaps. I wish this new owner the most success in bringing this place back up. He need to put in an air strip. That drive is a deal killer there. Cheers
Ninth Arch sorry for very late reply. I did try to search their website for job application. I think they are only hiring handy work people right now (carpenter, plumber, mason...etc).
Would be nice if they didn't completely modernize this place. Keep it as it is and no cell phone towers or internet access. Would be quite a nice haven from all the noise and busyness of our current world.
Kudos, I am a writer, the place is beautiful, although I am not a fan of the cold, I can see the amazing beauty. I am an avid crafter, love all forms of art. He is doing a wonderful thing, I wish more people would invest in our planet, and relish its landscape. Thank you, enjoyed this verymuch.
thatvtown is in good shape like it since ti been abanone for over 30 yaer like vegataion hasnt been growing wild in the building no building ready to fall i mean damn it even still have it power the only thing i dont get is why they didnt wnat them to take thier stuff i mean the only empty build i see was the shopping mall
Unlike Detroit, obviously Kitsault isn't plagued with crime, vandalism, looting and graffiti. Thank goodness for that. I wish the community well on its rebirth.
The bashing of iconic American cities like Chicago and Detroit are a favored right-wing pastime. Along with being a thinly veiled racism. (Pssst.... anti-social behavior isn't about melanin.)
g bridgman Detroit is a great place to live, full of freedom and honest people trying to sruvive. The problems in Detroit have alot to do with the same economic piracy that's stripping the world bare right now. Please don't use us as a cheap joke or to prove some political point. It's already drawing the racists. And please don't give up on the People of Detroit.
Detroit's main problem is loss of good jobs mostly connected to the auto industry. That, in part, can be blamed on bad corporate management. Corrupt government and school boards didn't help either.
He changed his mind In January of this year, however, Suthanthiran formed Kitsault Energy and began pitching the empty town as an ideal location to build a liquid natural gas plant and pipeline terminal to ship B.C.'s vast natural gas resources to markets in Asia. His original idea for the town sounded great but his new idea on what to turn the town into sounds gross and unapealing.
I love the idea that this gentleman from Virginia has bought this beautiful little town. What amazing beauty surrounding this. I truly hope this town is really brought back to life.
Blendeture I always wondered why in tv shows in those times or portrayed in those times, everyone has extremely bland furniture and wall colors. It's quite depressing to me. If earth tones were the trend, that makes sense. Although, I'm rather into earth tones, but in a very modern way.
spencer acker well i dont live in canada but i do know that snow can do damage over time. but then again the houses i was watching was in a camp. there cabins that have been abandon for 35 years. some of them are falling down due to the snow build up.
+Salem Saberhagen You're gonna live in a damped up "ready-to-go" house with no money or food nearby? Who are you going to beg from? Where are you gonna recycle your cans? You wanna be close to the rich and where there is a lot of food.
***** It's not a bad idea, but since the refugees complain when they get cooked food, a house, electricity and free medical care 24/h I can hardly see it happening.
Muse M its remote but if I was a squatter or homeless man with a couple homeless friends I would be like guys we have to get there! It's the promised land for us hobos! And then make the journey, it would be like their life dream to reach there no matter the difficulty. Hell, there might have even been some morphine left over in those hospitals and they could have a real party.it would be weaker after 3 decades sure, but if you have enough of it, that should be no problem.
And then there's homeless people in the world without a home etc. This town been abandoned for more then 30 years, with the lights turned on, all houses & apartments in top condition, shops, bank, school, library, a shopping mall & the list goes on. Plus natural beauty all around it, the best water etc... All there without people for more then 30 years. All I can say is, our world are so selfish, this big corporate companies only think about making money that's all! Many people without a home could benefit from this & be secure & happy. Makes me sick :-(

This is what it means to live in a "company town". The company owns EVERYTHING. They even own the stores. Read about the Matewan Massacre in 1921 in West Virginia, which was part of the Coal Wars to see how families of terminated employees were literally thrown into the streets at gunpoint by coal co agents. Wake Up, Dummy !!! Working people are being crapped on and you think it's funny. ... jkulik919@gmail.com
I talked with the owner through email and he denied me entry. Tried to explain that I'm a videograper/photography but that didn't help. Would really like permission to go there
it may be a time travel project. Things from 1980 should be kept as those are and people may come to have the taste of 1980 life. Time Travel motel could be a nice name.
I occasionally find vacation rentals around the Salton Sea in California done up as though they were still in the 50s or 60s. If the idea of time travel vacations appeal to you, try vacation rental apps. Safe travels my fellow chrononauts!
***** Well, not _everything_ was irradiated. You'd have to play as a ghoul if the whole game was a radioactive wasteland. Which might be pretty neat, actually...
+calalily67 so this guy got "took" in 2004 and 12 years after that he is looking for investors he can "take" because no one will ever live there, the mine didnt re-open, he wants 30 BILLION dollars for a gas pipeline to nowhere...
my biggest question is why everything seems to be well kept and also very clean looking, no any single tree or nature wildlife that ruin any of the building?
Today, the only inhabitants are a caretaker, who looks after cutting the lawns, a family of foxes and an occasional grizzly bear that wanders in to scavenge fallen fruit. Up the valley under a lush green old growth forest still lies 110 million tons of molybdenum. You can read the history on his website www.kitsault.com/about_hist.html
He's working on it. It's an ongoing process. www.kitsault.com/ www.businesswire.com/news/home/20161012005391/en/Krish-Suthanthiran-President-Kitsault-Energy-Proposes-Smarter
so 2015... what happened to it? I googled briefly and I just saw some stuff about a new energy plant but not much about the "utopia" community, are people living there yet?
NecroBourgeois There will be fracking there in the future... So it's fucked already. Makes you wonder, What happened to "it's not about money" Press Release: www.businesswire.com/news/home/20140522005210/en/Kitsault-Energy-Proposes-Dedicated-Energy-Corridor-Energy#.U34ZZ_ldXh5
Valueless Dollar I wish it had been left alone... or, at least, I wish this stupid channel had taken more footage of it. I am extremely interested in seeing entire houses that have been untouched for 30 years. It makes you wonder what could have been left in the fridge... It would be nice if it could have been preserved, but we all know that nature would take its toll, over time. Still, it's a bit mind boggling to think of all the cool things that had been left there and untouched.
maccollectorZ (Commenting Account) Apparently the electric is still on -left on for 30+ years. The last info is in 2013 www.kitsault.com/about_natives.html Fracking kills everything though
+onemon22 I certainly understand why you want to go there, it is so very beautiful and serene. I have a pretty good sense of what it's like there, as I live among the southern gulf islands, off the coast of British Columbia. :-)
This makes me sad. I live in a mining community and we couldn't survive if the mine closed down. I couldnt imagine our town being abandoned... our homes empty... :(
Seems like an amazing little town. I'd consider living there myself if it ever does get reestablished. I hope it does. No crime, no thugs, no gangs, no stupid riots, no smog, just nature, happy people, fresh air, and a great community.
sevewone I didn't say it would be perfect but there are certain places just like Kitsault where plenty of people live and there isn't much crime and whatnot. Some Alaskans leave their doors unlocked so they can share each other's food in the winter. Most thug trash would be lazy to move up to the cold Canadian mountains anyway. I still think it would be a good little place to live.
***** They got recreational weed in the election this year, but the dispensaries will not be able to sell to people over 21 years old until Jan. 2018. I live in NY and I did my research. Because I want to go there when it starts. They have only medical dispensaries now. I did my homework.
Latest on Kitsault, BC On January 8th, 2013, Kitsault Resorts announced the plan of establishing an LNG plant, refinery, and export terminal in Kitsault, BC. The proposed facility will provide export of energy products and pipelines will be established for oil, natural gas, and refined petroleum products that will travel to/from Kitsault, BC from Alberta, as well as Northeast and Northwest British Columbia. These products will be shipped to Asia and other high demand markets. This project is estimated to cost $20 to $30 Billion CAD/USD. We will be working with a consortium of energy producers, governments, customers, engineering firms, investors, First Nations, and others to accomplish these goals.
It's far from completed. It's an ongoing process. www.kitsault.com/ www.businesswire.com/news/home/20161012005391/en/Krish-Suthanthiran-President-Kitsault-Energy-Proposes-Smarter
That's a shame, to see so many abandoned dwellings. There's so many poor and homeless people out there, who would give anything to have a nice home / town to live in. Alas, greed and selfishness rule the world, so places like this rot away while those that need it most continue to suffer.
In a way, I quite admire someone doing such a constructive job. I'm just amazed that it didn't rot down further than it did. Just look at what happened to Chernobyl in a similar time frame...
the rot will be imported when you put people in there…graffiti….meth cooks…rats…(two and four legged) and rubbish etc….humans pack all that stuff before they pack their toothbrush
I am a single mom and would love to move there with my daughter 13, just so she could learn from all the people as the town grows, could you imagine the possibility for your child, would never have enough money ever, but sign me up.🤔🤔
***** you greatly miss the point that i was trying to make is that when you are isolated like im refereeing too, then you can basically do what you want without any restrictions.... taken you a city boy you may not know of this well now you do
***** with such a name i would never guess but after a few more message i could of took maybe you're a guy that was sensitive or bein a jerk....now i know how you doin im a country boy have you dealt with a country boy? what's up with the dj part
***** yes...woman are taken over the world... and seems to be a better place at times....so what kinda area you from and how is your surroundings....mines are cows and chickens... beer and blunts... freedom to do what you want
DixieNormus I KNOW WHAT ARABIC IS and habibi isnt just arabic u can have a islamic decent and be called a habibi, pakistan, iraq, iran, abu dhabi, etc, there all considered habibi, and most think habibi is a term of indearment or gratitude, not where im from in america esp in the hood if we are callin u habibi its a insult, we are basically sayin fuck you habibi lol.... IM xxV-APEX-Vxx from GTA...... i remember you.... clever name xD
If you need an architect overthere give me a call. This town would be such a peaceful community I´d be moving there in an instant. But leave that cool 70´s interior including the appliances and TV.
I kind of liked that interior as well. Most of the time the 70s make me a bit sick to my stomach, but the one they showed looked nice. I guess since it was barely used, it look better than normal.
This looks like many of the pop up towns that BC Hydro built while building the larger dams (Peace River/Mica Creek ie). Really odd feeling to watch an entire lil town full of life, emptied and then flooded. Crazy.
Scott Wallace Disco era was still a hell of a lot better than the horrible shit hop era that's been blaring in the mainstream since 1990! That shit needs to die!
I honestly think its pretty unreal to believe that this man whom owns so many businesses and has so many millions of dollars didn't see the profit of the property. common let's be real. what a coincidence that everything is all of a sudden bringing in profit...
I worked their in the early 1970s for BC MOLY,before this new town was even rebuilt, had a great 10 mos often working 16 hour days,Don woods was my boss now long gone.Would like yo visit again, reunion perhaps!
