A couple of people here say that her goal was nothing remarkable. That may be, but you play the cards you're dealt. What is remarkable, especially at her age, is her ability to see the field and make highly productive passes leading to goal scoring opportunities. That ability, which Lily displays so frequently, is rare on the USWNT.

A goal is a goal. In ultimate evaluation it would be called just a Tap-in. She didn't have to find room for herself, or needed to evade defenders. Just came up to it and tapped it in. But it did matter a lot in the situation of her young age and first time playing for the side. She can only go up from here.

The goal might not be exceptional.. The point how she managed to stay calm and tapped it in.. All her touch through the field looks too comfortable

Hayes will be lucky if Lily joins the USWNT. The Nats need a quality possession-capable 6 if the midfield is to be upgraded before the next WC. The Olympics midfield of Coffey, Albert, Horan was durable but not dynamic. To threaten Spain the Nats will need a credible threat through the middle. Shaw/Macario/ Lily/ Albert/Coffey will give all the options to Hayes.

The fact that she scored a goal her first time on the field is already amazing, especially with her age. Now yes, it may have not been a cool goal, but a goal is a goal and she has a talent. She also has the ability to work her way up and become more remarkable then she is now. She’s at a perfect spot for her age.
