Hey You're going to hurt yourself (or someone else) carrying a ladder that way. 1: Stand ladder straight up in the air. 2: Run your non-dominant arm through a rung just below your shoulder the grab the lowest rung you can reach. 3: Raise your dominant hand above your head and grab a rung you can reach comfortably. 4: Pick up the ladder and walk with it in the air. Seriously this isn't a joke. I used to be an exterior painter. You will be surprised at the amount of control you have and you can fit through tight spaces.

My experience: walked across the street to a very quiet FD and saw everyone literally just sitting around...no TV, computers, consoles, smartphones...nothing. Bizarre. This super bored group all listened to my story, asked a few questions, and then said...bummer dude. I then called a tree service, with a very scrappy owner, who breaks every stereotype of a middle aged manual labor service. He was a thin, wiry non-smoker, non-inked dude with no southern accent (I'm in NC). He tried the professional sling shot and failed twice. The failed rescue drone was at 50 ft and the original at 70 ft. He snagged a flimsy branch around 40 ft and just pulled himself up like a 1960s Adam West Batman. No belt or spurs or any other assistive devices. Absolutely no respect for the laws of physics. If he was a dog he would be a Belgian Malinois. He charged me $100 for pulling both drones. I called him a few months later, but this time he used his full size truck with bucket. Just to give you an idea of the equipment size, this plane was up at least 70 ft and he could only get within 50 ft of the tree trunk. Still $100. He drove about 45 minutes to the site. You do the math on that. I did write him a couple of awesome reviews, so hopefully there was some return.

I have tried a lot of these methods plus a dog ball chucker with a weighted ball and thin line attached, hand throwing a line with a small weight on the end or flying a quad with a line over has been the most effective. Something you didn’t mention was reverse props, I really think this helps reduce your chances of getting stuck in the first place, it will often knock the quad away from branches because the front props are pushing away from the arm geometry which traps branches if they are spinning default direction, turtle mode has improved the chances of getting a quad unstuck now once it’s in there now though. Another top is don’t disarm if you go into a tree if the quad is still moving, keep it moving and try to fly out, disarming will increase the chances of it dropping into a really bad spot. Nothing will save you from power looping straight down into the top of a tree though 😂

Well..... i dont get my nickname out of nowhere..... Aleady tried almost all of them. Take a golf ball, drill a hole, pass a tiny cord or fishing line and use a slingshot to nock the quad or pass over the branch.

Arborist Hand Saw Kit!!! You can buy these kits cheaply on amazon and store them in a pouch. It is basically the arborist weight that you shown before with a chain saw blade (blade only). How to use: Throw the weight over the branch. Pull the line until chain saw portion is over the branch. Then pull back and forth until you cut through the branch. I could see this kit being the best option, as you can easily escalate your attempts. First try shaking with the rope, and then you can decide to cut off the branch if shaking doesn't work. Disclaimer: I have not used it specifically for drone rescue. However I have used it to cut down several branches on my property. Works great, easy to use, cheap, and portable.

Joshua great video, you cracked me up watching it, LOL. My simple method that has worked every time me and other friends. I just use a simple pocket hand-held sling shot to shoot a small lead sinker attached to a fishing line, then attach a rope to shake, shake, shake the branch.

Great video. I've used the "call the fire dept." method and they were more than happy to come out with their ladder truck. problem was that their ladder wasn't tall enough so they ended up blowing the drone out of the tree with their water hose. Boy, that sure got the drone out of the tree, but the water destroyed the camera, and this was a camera drone, not an FPV drone and replacing the camera would have cost half the price of the drone, not to mention the cost of labor. The drone still flew, but without a working camera I hung that one up. I did learn though that the fire department was more than willing to come out and in fact they enjoyed getting out when their lives were not put at risk. They also enjoyed learning about drones. This was years ago, before most fire departments had drones in their arsenal of tools. Had they had a drone as many of them do these days, they likely could have used a hook hanging from the drone with a tether release system in case the hook got caught in the tree. That method works well, but not when using an FPV drone since generally they don't have gimbals allowing you to point the camera down so you can see what you're doing.

My personal favorite because I grew up with walnut trees and love to throw is the Vortex football. It is the most precise instrument you can throw that will not hurt anything and usually return after removing your aircraft from a VERY tall tree.

I keep a spool of 50 pound test multistrand fishing line in my bag. It is nearly as light as cheap fishing line, but almost as strong as rope, and it doesn't take up much space. We've only had to fly this fishing line over a tree once or twice. We've knocked quads out of trees with the Mr Longarm painter's pole dozens and dozens of times. That's our favorite. It definitely isn't the best painter's pole for this, either, but it is the one we were able to buy the day we *REALLY* needed to get a quad out of a tree!

Thanks for the video. Ours was probably 40+ feet up. Decided to add a soccer ball AND volleyball to the tree over a couple of hours and then went over to the Fire Department. They were totally up to check it out, but after they saw where it was at, they didn't have any simple solutions. It all ended when a good Samaritan with an even better throwing arm came over, picked up a couple of our baseballs and hit it on his 4th throw. Drone came down, landed flat, nothing broken. Unreal. Declined payment and was happy to have just helped us out. Oh, the 2 balls remain. Hopefully the next storm will knock those out...

I got the PVC "drainage pipe" (I don't remember exactly what it was called, but I'm NOT talking about typical PVC water pipe, which is way too heavy per foot.) The drainage PVC tube has no pressure rating and therefore has ultra thin walls, weighs a small fraction of what the usual PVC pipe does, and is available inexpensively in large diameters (6" plus)...AND they come with one end already reduced to slip one inside the next end-to-end with no extra parts or work required to make it function. Then I duct taped some stiff wire (thin rod) fingers to the far end so I can hook a branch or the quad. I can go 50 ft or more. Down side is that it's shortest broken-down form is 10 ft long and 3-5 tube diameters around....need a van or pickup. (Although you could spend twice the money to buy twice as many tube sections, cut them in half (or shorter), discard the one half and just use the (now shorter) halves with reduced ends so broken down they are only 4 or 5 ft. long. Might fit in some trunks and most SUVs then!)

I have a wrist sling shot, 80lb fishing line and a pack of 1oz disk sinker weights. The sling shot with the 1oz disks are crazy accurate (and potentily deadly) and carries the line well. Just gotta make sure you let out enough line. Under 25bucks at Big5!! I use this with my drone business as leaving a drone in a customer's tree is an unacceptable liability.

Don't take this the wrong way; it's supposed to be a compliment but you're so much more capable than I would've expected. Tree climbing skills are awesome and swinging that leather bag onto that high branch, you were spot on! The way you compiled this video was really good. Very nicely put together. Congrats. I totally never thought of the "cutting the tree down" method! I totally thought the rope at the end was going to be you using a pulley to get yourself up there, but I guess that was a swing.

lol As a person who owns firearms and uses them on a regular basis, you nailed it JB. Do not shoot your quad out. You cant account for that bullet and it will come down some where. You're legally responsible for every bullet that comes out of your barrel. If you damage some ones property or hurt/kill some one, then you're going to jail and have to live with that act of stupidity for the rest of your life. Don't do it, use your head, stay safe, have fun.

A friend of mine got his plane stuck on the top of a tree once. Luckily there was a helicopter pilot nearby who saw it happen. He had a low level clearance license and was able to use the landing skid to knock it out of the tree. The prop wash also helped blow it away from the tree as it fell. On another occasion I got one of my planes stuck in a tree. We fly in an undeveloped industrial estate next to an existing estate where my brother's crane and equipment hire business is. I drove to his business and then drove back with a boom lift. Unfortunately the tree was much higher than what I could reach from the boom lifts basket. This was a weekend and fortunately as I was returning the boom lift, my brother was returning from a crane job. He and his dogman / rigger came to the rescue. The dogman rode a bosuns chair attached to the end of the crane's boom and hand plucked my plane from the tree. A classic case of it's not what you know, but, who you know..

"hired an arborist" to get a mavic rental out of a tree. he climbed the tree! about 25 meters up. he explained this is like the least difficult thing, usually he is up there with a bunch of equipment for tree service so grabbing a drone was a walk in the park. i was so amazed. have resorted to the "throw a big stick" method a few times since then: pro tip, the stick comes back down after it is in the air. wear running shoes and plan an escape route before throwing.

Slingshot and a tennis ball works too depending on the height and the slingshot. Nice comprehensive list and demonstration of methods! My buddy got stuck high up in moss on the side of a tree. Flew my quad up with arborist rope attached and overshot and ended up in another tree and we had to use the fiberglass pole to get mine back before resuming getting my buddies back lol! The whole operation took hours but we got both back in the end. 👍

Quad actually may be used in tree climbing so your can return a favor to your friend arborist. I used FPV to run the line over particularly tall pine tree which was out of reach by arrow, weight and slingshot to run as a puller for working climbing rope. The best line I found is waxed 500lb arborist line from Petzl, it is rigid just right, thin but strong. Combined with Cube box and a soft weight it is a superior recovery tool. Cube box contains the line to prevent it from getting tangled by twigs and leaves and allows free deployment for multiple attempts.

Well done! I have been successful spin-casting then pulling a rope BUT I have also spent hours removing someone else's fishing line that was the reason my quad got snagged! If using fishing line clean up after yourself! Gaaa. My local tree trimmer bailed me out of my worst tree in 15 min for $60. Every method can work depending on the situation. I like the arborist slingshot too. When I was removing the old fishing line I removed a golf club too. I was not able to reach the Bugs 3 it was thrown at. It's still there.

I'm a European and I had shot the branch in an extremely high pine tree. Quick and easy. Of course one has to be aware of the surroundings but it is actually a good method if you're not in a populated area. :)

slingshot - meant for shooting fish bait around a lake are about 5-7 USD on bangers (beware that some european countries see slingshots as a weapon and hence require a license) poking - fix a smooth stick (not the top of of a fishing rod, it'll snag) to the underside of your quad and play some tree pool - horizon mode is highly recommended as is a heawy quad. thx josh

That was one of the funniest videos in a while and the idea with tying a rope to another quad is probably the way I'm gonna use to get my next stuck quad out of the tree :)!
@DavidReynolds-kr6yh
@DavidReynolds-kr6yh 3 года назад
LesKira , a friend of mine did that, only he tried to use a hook on the end of it. He ended up with both quads stuck in the tree, ended up calling a tree cutting company to get them both out. Cost him $100 in Australian money, so about $65 American at the time, which I thought was pretty reasonable.

@@DavidReynolds-kr6yh Depends on the tree I guess, but if you have a rope you can still pull the other one out so you dont get 2 stuck quads.

Over the past 3 days i used any of these methods. The final solution for my rescue was a combo of: 24ft ladder, 15ft pole and a friend who can climb up the ladder, 10 more ft of tree and swing the pole. I may be a bit tree shy for awhile...

Very informative and helpful video. I have the 30ft aluminum extension pole. Works great but doesn't easily fit in my Ford Focus. I really like the idea of Drone saver, collapsed definitely will fit in the trunk. That sling shot is impressive. Thanks Joshua 👍💖🤓

How about combining? Shooting the washer and fishing line with a regular slingshot. Saves space and is quite accurate

Joshua Bardwell , I mentioned another one, but saw your reply to this comment, pvc piping, just join them together opened end to closed end, and as many pieces as you need, fairly cheap as well.

See my comment above about using very thin-walled, large diameter, drainage PVC tubing.

This video just saved me around 800$ today I watched it some time ago, and today I had my quad stuck on the tree for the first time. When it happened it was already getting dark, and I wasn't prepared. Weather - wet But. Since I already knew, what to do, I didn't panic and had a chance to act properly. I immediately searched for the tool store, bought a rope, and went back I got my drone back after around 1,5h of throwing the stick attached to this rope. When it was already completely dark. I did it just before the lights went dark at the FC :O Thank You.

I have used the fishing pole. Works great! Cast the line over the limb, tie a rope to the line and reel it in. Even heavy twine may work, if you don’t have a long enough rope. I’ve also used hard PVC with a second person on a ladder, joining the sections and guiding it through the tree limbs. After 3 section even hard PVC will flex quite a lot, so leaning it against branches helps prevent the flexing and reduces the weight, helping me guide it to the quad or whatever I’m retrieving. Good video!

joshua, put s good piece of metal (light weight of course) on strategic part(s) of your kwads. When stuck on a try fly another kwad with a arbor line with a really good magnet attached to it. Fly the magnet up to the kwad and you'll be able to sometimes even tow your stuck kwads. ;) That's the new service my old Phantom 3 has been doing! Has worked really well. 😀😀

Juan Cintron wouldn't the magnetic field mess with the motors?
@just_wynn_it7637
@just_wynn_it7637 3 года назад
Another thing to add, if the magnet touches any electronics, the magnetic field may destroy them and erase data to the point where it is unrepairable.
@JuanCintron
@JuanCintron 3 года назад
@@neonoir__ Hence, I mentioned strategic places. Also, I use double sided foam tape to isolate from body. Still, you should avoid electrical wires and boards. Metal plates doesn't need to be huge either. It's best with one or two small pieces that'll adhere to body (bottom or top).
