Probably would want to use commas there, though it's really close - so close that the SAT/ACT would never make you choose between the two in this situation.
Im relatively good with this however sometimes I see things like peoples names/occupation (such as an engineer) and I feel like it could be non essential but then its not?
The engineer John Smith Engineer John Smith "The" or no article are usually essential. An engineer, John Smith, "A" or "an" usually makes it nonessential.
