Great start. Cricketers Arms circa 1978...bikers pub...what a night!!! Band playing FAT Bottom Girls...and then out of nowhere right in the middle of that great rendition....an announcer shouts on onbthe microphone....PORK DRAW...PORK DRAW...PINK 565. And then the band comes back in again!!! So funny 😂😂😂😂
Fantastic video. Learnt so much. I didn't know that about lakeside and that 1000 year wood which Eastleigh council have destroyed or going to destroy by putting houses there. Great job rob 👍
Thanks Gavin. Eastleigh Borough still has so many wonderful places to walk despite the best efforts of EBC and the developers. This area was my playground as a kid and I personally think it criminal what they've done to North Stoneham Park.
Hahaha the grey lady ... As a kid I was told the metal around the grave was there to keep her in haha ... Thank you so much such wonderful memories .. Marie Condon :)
Great video absolutely loved it. I thought Avenue pond was actually called Smithies pond? Shame about the old stables suddenly getting burnt down I guess Highwood realised that it would cost too much to convert and incorporate into the old people’s home, so now they can knock it down & rebuild some monstrosity!!!!!!!
Very nice and interesting video mate 👍 I am Eastleigh born these places have changed slot since I have lived there. Am now 28 and been up north for 12 years
Our BMX track, before BMX was invented was three cornered woods at the top of Chestnut Ave where Asda is now. There was a massive death dip that we'd go down on everything from a shopper to a chopper, great fun.
Fantastic film Rob. I grew up just up the road from the Cricketers in Chestnut Ave (next to the then Barton Pevrill grammar school) between 1968 and 1981. I had my first under age drink in Cricketers. The place has changed beyond all recognition and I didn't know about middle Stoneham. I too used t play in Hilliers nursery and I only remember the war memorial as a run down ruin. We used to call it the crypt. Really enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Thanks
@@RobsHampshirePubWalks Hello Rob and Lance. Absolutely loved this video Rob. I never knew that the Judge who oversaw the trial of Guy Fawkes lived in the old stables house. I'm married to Gary Tapner. Gary lived in Chestnut Ave in one of the chalet bungalows opposite the thatched cottage and near the then T- Junction of Chestnut and Passfield, which is no longer a T- Junction but a round- about. Gary knew Lance mum Jill. Did you to Quilly Rob?
The wall went round the vegetable and fruit garden, not North Stoneham House.Inside the garden is an ice house. The developers of the housing estate say they will restore thisand the gardens
Looking again at this lovely video 3 years later I wanted to add that the man who did some alterations to the North Stoneham Church was a man called Hooper who also built North Stoneham House. Also the Coach House which was built at the same time as the Mansion. The lakes at Lakeside just filled up with rainwater over a few years
As a local - I literally loved watching this! Thank you!! Lots of info about my local area I didn’t know about. (I agree with you, so sad to see the beautiful land built upon. EBC have a lot to answer for!!)
Hey! Thought you would like to know that when our family sadly sold the farm it was agreed that the house was not to be torn down but turned into something! They mentioned a possible elderly people’s home :)
What was the large house next to the church with the 3 or 4 white pillars? I remember it being demolished and just seeing the pillars remaining for a while. I was fascinated by them!
It was probably North Stoneham House itself. Much of it was demolished when I was a kid but I think the pillars lived on for a while. I'll put a pic on the Facebook group.
It was called Temple Lodge and was an exact model of Temple of Ceres at Eleusis. It was later altered to include living quarters consisting of a living room, kitchen & 2 bedrooms (from Harold Barstow’s book on North Stoneham). I too remember playing amongst these old pillars as they were where the cut way to the lakes was.
FYI you can't currently (late December 2020) complete this walk. The scumbag housing developers have erected 3 or 4 8ft-high metal fences directly across the path at about 8:53 (SU43371768) so you can't get through. The only clue is a laminated sign on the gatepost at the Chestnut Ave entrance that says "No Access to Stoneham Football Ground" (which we weren't trying to get to). I wish I'd known this before I tried pushing a double-pram along the route (which was pretty stupid anyway, given all the mud!)
Thanks Pete, second person today to have pointed this out. Please use the link to report to the Forestry Commission. www.eastleigh.gov.uk/country-parks-and-open-spaces/open-spaces/management-and-maintenance
@@RobsHampshirePubWalks Cheers Rob! I've shot them an email, but I expect they'll just say that it's not a right of way so there's nothing much they can do...?
