I would recommend to keep on waiting for the market to keep on crashing as low as possible before purchasing any Rolex. The flippers are deserving to lose money. The AD are deserving to learn humility and respect toward their clients. Rolex must be accountable for its total lack of intervention. The watch market needs to be sanitized, collectionners should hold their purchases as long as needed. I'm personally patient and I will wait until necessary.
It's stabilised over the last couple months. It won't drop much further until models are readily available in ADs again, which is coming sooner or later, then second hand prices will plummet.
@@LouisMorales-zx3jm I believe that first they must suffer before understanding, coping with their new reality and finally give discounts, it's a process and we're just at the beginning :)
I paid $1,675 for my SS Submariner with date, 16610, in November of 1989 from the Grafstein & Co. in Santa Ana, CA. They used to run ads in the back of various automotive magazines I read at the time (in college) and they beat most Rolex dealers on price at the time. It has been my daily other than the occasional cheap Casio to wear while traveling or working in my shop on vehicles. It has been an enjoyable constant in my life that I don’t regret purchasing.
Thanks Teddy for making that video, truly focused on value. Very relevant in the current market. Unfortunately too many dealers still avoid that conversation but the market is finally going down the way it should and hopefully it will continue to go in this direction in order to bring more sanity in this hobby.
Love the show!! One thing used to bother me, but now I enjoy hearing that fulfillment is both "quick and fast". Keep it up Teddy :) Much love from Toronto.
Personally I think that the whole concept of paying OVER retail for anything is crazy. Maybe Rolex just isn't for me, but there is absolutely NO way that I'd pay more than retail just because Rolex isn't able to keep up with customer demand. I won't be playing the game with ADs of 'buy our crap' before finally being allowed the watch that I actually wanted.
I don't understand this anger and resentment at Rolex for not making more watches. They make plenty of watches. You see them everywhere. They're by far the biggest selling swiss watch brand. If Rolex had decided that it's in their long-term interest to keep the brand somewhat exclusive and NOT to flood the market with even MORE watches, I salute them for that.
I’m glad I grew out of lusting after an explorer. I understand the Rolex love but I’ve just woken up that there are better things to think about and spend money on.
I hope you are right, but unless you now hate all watches in general, you will always get that itch for an Explorer I find. Substitutes are always substitute, they can never be the real thing unfortunately.
@@g43654definitely don’t hate watches in general, which is why videos like this are still in my feed. I’ve just come to realize what I have is enough and I don’t need to take it to the next level. Put that money into travel or the property fund. I did not buy any specific explorer homage because I agree that will not scratch the explorer itch. Just good with what I have.
@@g43654i kinda did that, bought a bb36 instead of a OP/explorer. While my taste now probably prefers DJ with jubelee my bb36 never felt right since i really wanted the explorer
Makes me beg to question if the models trading at or below retail; would that equate to AD’s be willing to sell without the “coveted list” if they had those models in stock?
So much potential: ceramic, crazy and unique complication, not popular which usually is great to make a true collector. The only problem is that you are absolutely right: it's bulcky and hugly in its current form.
My family adopted these in the early nineties my dad used to make us take one out if we went on nights out... Which would really annoy my mom because it meant there was one less phone at home😅... the crazy thing was you could rarely get a signal even if you were stood right underneath the base station (usually at public bus train stations and post offices) it seems their capacity wasn't even up to the 10 or 15 customers they actually had. This was the first example of a 'one update and you're done' technology. The telcos were rolling out early cell phones at the time. So the rabbit phone fell into obscurity very quickly. It was also very expensive. I often think of rabbit as a bit like the 'paging' version of cell phones... God now I feel old.
Hey. I am planning to buy my first rolex and it will probably be my only rolex for a long time. I am confused between the datejust steel Wimbledon, steel gold Wimbledon, date sub black and the bluesy. Which would be the best looking watch for occasion wear. Thanks
Ain’t a lot of people who can really afford 10k + for a watch. You need at least 200k in the bank and make 10k+ per month before you should consider getting one
Good video - wrong personal point in my life. I am at the „own a Longines, considering to buy an Omega a few years from now“ point. I personally don’t think I will ever make it to the Rolex-point. What an absolute luxury problem….
Great video... I just feel happy to see how much money the flippers have been losing in the last months. I still hope to be able to get an Oyster Perpetual 41mm at retail price or a little bit above.
I m don’t flip so I’m not sure but I’m pretty sure flippers aren’t buying models from AD’s that they know aren’t selling for a premium over retail. The “new” ones floating around on the secondary probably made there way out the AD’s back door on discount.
Hey Teddy, I am from India 🇮🇳 and I love your content ❤️. Your's is the only channel which covers almost everything about watch and exactly what a watch enthusiast go through their entire collection journey. Apart from great content, I have one issue. Why your giveaways are for US only. I also want to buy watch from your shop tell me how can I do that!!!???
Why? An educated guess you can get a Longines or a Hamilton much cheaper in Mumbai than getting it from the States with all the shipping and customs costs you’ll incur!
I just inherited my fathers 37 year old DateJust Rolex that still is working after he passed away last year. My father kept the original receipt from 1986. I'm an average 9-5 guy and I wear Apple watches. It would have been his birthday today.
I just picked up my Explorer 40 from my AD and could not be happier. I didn't buy it for investment reasons but I also find it is surprising that a new released Steel Sports model with such history isn´t a bigger success which can be valued by prices on the grey market. Im glad it is still flying under the radar of most as I am not going to sell it for ages. Thanks for the Video Teddy and keep it up!
I was offered an Explorer 40 but I find that it's too disproportionately large, plus I can't get over the tiny caseback that reminds me about the true intended size of the watch.
Excellent information Teddy. You had referred to current market prices for those Rolex watches, I was wondering where someone could purchase those Rolex watches at or below retail prices. Thanks again for providing very informative information about many watches.
funny how the retail price for the white gold submariner is higher than the white gold pepsi.....they are basically the same watch but the GMT has a more complicated movement
Can I please ask a silly question. What's the difference between retail and market. If its retail. Is that the price you would get it for from a AD. Just wondering.. thanks I luckily got hold of a Sub back in 2019 for 8k GBP a watch store in London. But been on the waiting list for a Pepsi for over 3 years.
I'm in a small city with one Rolex dealer only. Certain amount of arrogance present. I'm a retired pilot of 40 years and currently mostly wear of my modest collection an Aerospace i picked up 20+ years ago. the Explorer 2 is of interest but i am not going to be bent over the table either if I think the local pricing is inappropriate.
The one thing I cannot understand is the jump in price from stainless steel to gold. The gold does not warrant that much of an increase in price. After all Gold is around 2000 an ounce how does the Watch from 18,000 go to almost 40,000 just because it's gold makes no sense.
@@METVWETV Which it's not. But even if it did, it would not justify the jump in price. I'll give you an example. This is a little bit different topic. I had an AP 41 mm all rose gold ultra thin TORBILLION watch . I could not sell it on CHRONO 24 for $90,000. I had it there for six months and it didn't sell finally I sold it to Watchbox for $85,000. I see those watches going now for $200,000. lol but my point is, I saw the same watch just because it has blue sapphires. It's almost a half $1 million lol where do they justify this? OK I've seen it for less but still not that much maybe 350 to 400,000 just because it has sapphires LMAO.
@@METVWETV remember, it's only 18 karat gold as well. Still nowhere near to justify the price! many ounces of gold are in a Rolex watch? A Day-Date 40 weighs about 180 grams. Take out the movement, and it's mostly 18K gold. As a guess, I'd say there's 140-150 grams of 18K gold, or 105-112 grams of 24K gold. That's about 3.5 troy ounces of pure gold.Apr 30, 2019
You make it pretty interesting, very informative, you just got a new sub sir Can't wait to start my watch collection thanks to you for sparking this interest
Teddy, fun and informative video like always. Do AD's actually stock those watches today? I see nothing in the greater Seattle area. Am 100% with you on the Explorers especially the 224270.
At about 9:40 while discussing the Explorer, he said, "You could do some sales tax manipulation if you buy if from a certain source" Does anyone know what that means? Thanks
all well and good Teddy but any of these are still hard to come by at least at my little AD in Buffalo. I've been on their list for years. I must not be as upper crust as they want.
It might be short for models you can walk out the door the same day with but the waitlist on many models has shrunk considerably with many models people getting call on is less then a week or teo
Teddy: I sure would love to find a watch at near retail price. Where are they? I sure can't find them. And, I am not seeking a wildly expensive watch: simply a datejust with a blue dial, a fluted bezel and a jubilee bracelet.
When you say "trading at" are you talking about USED prices? Because I don't see any of these being offered NEW for under MSRP. (If I am wrong, please show me where to buy these new for these prices.) Watches are not commodities like oil or gold, so it does make a difference whether I am buying new or used, how much I am willing to pay.
Every one hold it’s for a little while and not buy it if don’t needs to, dealers will be more desperate to sell and demand down price will down same thing when demand up prices skyrocketed. Now it’s the chance to hold it.
It is. Purchased a sweet Speedy Mark II 2022 in mint condition two days ago, 2500€ under retail, I basically told my AD straight in the eyes that I clearly witnessed zero rotation in his Rolex inventory and suggested him to return to pre-covid prices if he wanted our group of collectionners to buy his Rolex. I am not believing in full return to pre-covid prices, to be honest, but all of them, flippers, AD, grey market, are deserving the slap.
I'd prefer a Grand Seiko as a grail watch. I have negative association with Rolex. It's the bling factor that is robbing Rolex of its class and prestige. As the global economy weakens, and we move from this cold WW 3 and approach a hot WW 3, people will be liquidating their valuables at way below market. It's the diamond water economic paradox. A Rolex may be worth 10 lb of beans.
Quite traumatic, but I can see where you’re coming from. It’s in my memory as a teenager in the Seventies and my parents talking about the end of the world. Then the mid Eighties I worked in an environment that touched on the end of the world scenarios. I’ve been frightened shitless by the world and it seems the circle is coming round again. Luckily I will be wearing my Casio Duro or any one of my four Paganis at the end of the world party. I won’t be troubled by having to liquidate my Rolex……..
