We recently remodeled our kitchen. Have released a coffee pot, some carafes, more than 20 cookbooks, several baking pans and cake pans, tons of cooking utensils, a blender, a hand mixer, 6 cereal bowls, an entire set of glassware, several dish towels and dish cloths, an under counter storage piece, a few plants, 7 tablecloths, 12 placemats, 6 charger plates and a LOT of decor. I AM ON THE MOVE

Learning to say "No" IS hard so I tested the waters, so to speak, with this phrase... "If you need an answer right now, the answer is no". I tell ya, they NEVER seem to need an immediate answer and you've bought yourself some time to consider whether or not you want to commit.

I found out a coworker loves to play board games with his girlfriend. I bring a new one to him every few weeks. There is always a shortage of pens at work so I bring those too. Let them pick what they want and throw the rest away.

I have a huge and painful fantasy self collection to purge and it is all the materials I have bought over many years (decades!) to learn how to draw. A notebook and pencil would have been sufficient, but my fantasy self kept thinking this or that paper, sketchbook, drawing media, or how-to book would somehow make me a better artist. I spent an enormous amount of money, so I have the guilt of that, and the disappointment that I won't enjoy the satisfaction I imagined someone who draws well would feel. It was just a fantasy that made me feel bad all this time. Shoulda, woulda, coulda...not gonna...ever. Good-bye pressure I put on myself. Hello freedom and space to focus on hobbies my real self truly loves and does do.

A good tip I learned as a young mom for obligations is to reply to every invitation or ask with something like "Oh, that sounds like fun but give me a day or so to think about it and I'll get back to you". Then get back to that person in a timely manner with your yes or no. This helps give you time to think about how much you already have on your plate before you commit to more.

I am a people pleaser, I said yes, or even found myself saying “I can do that”, to the point of exhaustion. One of my friends pointed that out to me. She would say, “Repeat after me, “NOOOO”. Eventually I caught on, I’ve learned to be more mindful in what I say yes to. My life is so much better. I’ve been on a decluttering journey for years, this is one of the hardest things I had to declutter! Thank you for including it. You asked what kitchen items I am decluttering, two old peeling nonstick fry pans, replaced by one new ceramic one, also a small stock pot, and one oversized stock pot (I’m short, I felt like I needed to stand on my toes to stir in it!). Cook books: I’ve donated most of them already, whenever I need a new recipe, I go online, print it, if I like it, it is saved in a binder. 🦋🌸🍂

I’m decluttering any clothes that i have to constantly pull up or adjust. I have a lot too cuz I settle and think I can just deal with it but NO MORE. I am done with that crap!

I take my magazines to a local laundromat so when I decluttered my cookbooks they went there also. If you have ever sat and waited in a laundromat you will read anything. And I hope some were taken home to enjoy.

one thing i have chosen to change is not have Rolls of wrapping paper. i am going to donate to whomever wants it and buy only packs of folded christmas wrap.

I just donated a lot of stuff to goodwill. Toys my grands don't play with, knick knacks & candles that I don't love, movies that no one watches, & some kitchen stuff. I had an oven roaster & a toaster that I never use.

As far as my kitchen --storage containers without lids and lids without containers. I do use them for leftovers for lunch the next day, but they only work as a matching set. Board games is a great idea- I haven't even considered that.

Learning to say No is hard for me. If there's a need and I can fill it, I feel obligated to be the one to fill it, even if I really don't want to :/

I had been saving two blue floral towels that I loved for 7 or 8 years, even though our bathroom is no longer blue. Guess what? Somehow, they turned brown in the plastic storage container. Yes, I could wash them, but the point is...things don't last forever. Also, I was going to declutter my large dutch oven because the handle broke off, but Amazon sells dutch oven handles for $5.99. (Is there anything they don't sell? LOL.) Great video, Erica! I liked what you said about gifts. You have a way of taking something I have already heard & simplifying the language to make it a more clear directive. By the way, terrific Fall color on you!

For your daughter's leotard, you could make a gymnastics shadowbox for the wall with some sentimental items. My mom did it with a cute leotard, my first pair of toe shoes, and some programs from recitals. I tried to declutter them when I left for college, and she wasn't ready to let go of them, hence the shadowbox!

I've been trying to declutter items from my kitchen, but things I don't use, my husband wants to keep. But he said we could put some rarely-used things into the attic, so my kitchen is easier to clear all the counters now!

For cookbooks in which there is only 1 or 2 recipes that I use out of it, I just make a photo copy of the recipe and put it in my recipe binder (I put each recipe in a sheet protector so they are individual pages and I can find them), and then I donate the cookbook. No need to hang onto the whole thing to reference only 1 recipe.

I just decluttered 5 cereal containers because I quit buying cereal because the price keeps going up and you don't get that much in the package for the price and my kids eat it all right away, so the containers were just sitting in the top of my pantry taking up space I could use for other items.

My blender broke and I had no problem throwing it away BUT the least expensive blender at the store was a deluxe one on super sale and came with a food processor attachment that I knew when I purchased the blender I would never use. I still purchased the blender because it was the least expensive and high quality. I’m having a hard time letting the food processor part go. I’ve had the blender three years and still don’t plan on using that attachment. My house is 99 percent decluttered. I can’t figure out why this one thing is hanging me up. I had an easier time deciding to declutter my Grandma’s china. It ended up my niece wanted it but I was fully prepared to donate the china if no one in the family wanted it. Writing this now it seems silly to me to keep the food processor attachment. Out it goes!

"learning to say No is a skill" in fact ;) i learnt it 2 years ago, i felt SOO liberated since :) at the beginning, i felt guilty but then, it is like all, more we do, more we become trained and confident at it ;) i advice to train for it, in fact ;) thanks for these reminders and inspirations ;) and about the expectations... thank you.. i have to work on that now.. i have to let go pressure about doing too much ... thank you for this video ;)

I’m donating my Dash Rapid Egg Cooker from my kitchen. I don’t use it often enough. I’m reducing plastic from my home. I am encouraging a more simple way of living. I can boil eggs in a pot. 😂 I hope you have a nice weekend, Erica! ❤

A great way to deal with marketing emails is to set up a box in your email for marketing and then create a filter so that every email with the word "unsubscribe" goes to that box. If you want to look at a certain one later, it's there but it doesn't clutter up your inbox. If you know you'll never want to look at them, just create a filter for those to be deleted before they ever hit your inbox.

I have a lot of fantasy self clothes that I really need to get rid of. I have shoes still in boxes that I tried on but never wore because they didn't fit right. I have like new purses and wallets I will never carry again. I really need to gather everything up and I want to donate it to a battered women's shelter in my area. I lack the energy and motivation to get this done.

Re: the leotard - depending on *how* it does not fit (like it's too short for her torso), could you hack off the bottom and let her keep wearing it as a gymnastics shirt? Do you have anyone in your local community who sews and could finish off the bottom edge (trade some childcare maybe)? Just a thought so she can keep loving it a little longer

I’ve decluttered a metal pasta holder box. We eat so much pasta on an weekly basis, I was keeping filling it. At this point, it’s easier for me to leave it in its original plastic package.

Cleaned out the hidey-hole cabinet over the fridge the other day! Let go of an old thermos ( used for hot tea when son played football TEN years ago!) as well as a bunch of coffee accessories and old meal containers.Love the feeling of knowing what I have.Love your idea about expectations - holidays can sink fast just because of unrealistic expectations!

Good list! What was number one? I've decluttered most of these things more than once, as it seems I always have one more pass to make. As I and my daughter volunteer at our local food pantry, we tend to pick up just "one more" piece of clothing, or household item. We need to work one making outfits from what we have now, and identifying what Particular Piece that needs to be BOUGHT. Like a capsule wardrobe except maybe not as small. We definitely have to have limits! Our space is finite. (But), we do return most of the items we pick up for vaious reasons, wrong size, doesn't look/feel right, too short, etc. I did the kitchen ware last year, but when my husband's Grandma passed away this year, we inherited another household's worth of stuff. It's tough to say no! And also really tough to declutter when everything means so much. Divesting ourselves from the emotional attachment is difficult. We lost our son this year; I have two small boxes of his drawings, and his urn. That's all we have left. I will not be getting rid of those, I can't. Bottom line, I'm happy we had the chance to invest our emotions in our family, but taking care of their belongings after their passing is hard! Happy holidays anyway.

I went through my kitchen and got rid of duplicates measuring cup set, measuring spoon set, tongs, scissors, bottle openers. I do have duplicates of other things but we have a huge family on holidays so I kept then things I know I use regularly. Still though, got quite a bag of stuff out of my drawers. Also got rid of old icky dish clothes and towels.

Kitchen item: my set of china. I have never used it. 28 years ago, I got it as a gift from my grandmother who bought it over time from the grocery store. She didn't use it. Gave it to a friend with 4 daughters who wants each girl to have a set of china.

Donate some of those beautiful cookbooks to your local library and then you can take them out of the library if/when you want them. You can also request books through interlibrary loans that your local library doesn’t have.

Shelters can use gently used items also, not just new items. Someone wanting to give to a shelter can call their local shelter and ask what they take. :)

My 10" pan. Its non-stick surface is covered with pits. I definitely need a new one. The other area to declutter is the bottom of the glassware cabinet. There is a six-foot top that has glasses and mugs. There is a three-foot bottom with doors that needs to be decluttered. It has been partially decluttered and areas repurposed, but it needs an overhaul. As I transition from teaching for 30 years to being retired, I had to do an overhaul of my school email. Number one, I had to create a new personal email that was not my current personal email. Number two, I had to unsubscribe to dozens of places that emailed weekly. As a matter of fact, I was sharing on Facebook all of my different Google accounts and how I am able to differentiate between them due to the picture. A former colleague/current retiree wished he had thought of creating a new Gmail account as he lost people he would have liked to continue email contact with when he retired.

Ericaaaa!! I'm here to challenge you to rip the recipes you want out of those books, and get a clearfile for them. Just like people with books don't equal intelligence, people with cookbooks don't equal chefs! Release the identity clutter and get what you need from them. Feel ok donating cook books with a few pages missing, someone will be grateful for the rest!

I did that years ago before moving, and the torn pages really bother me 😂 I’d definitely recommend photocopying them or using an X-acto blade if you insist on tearing them out. Don’t bother keeping the ones you’ve always wanted to try - try them now or get rid of the book.

I get most of my recipes online now so I can see which ones get the highest reviews and avoid recipe failures. Groceries are becoming too expensive for failures! I get my cookbook fix by checking them out of the library to browse through and get inspiration. I keep favorite recipes (printed out, photocopied, or hand written) in one binder within those clear insert sheets.

@@tpark9626 you're humanising a book.. It's a material object. SHE enjoys the recipe, so she can keep some and toss some, not everyone has the time or bandwidth to write down 50 recipes.
