How fast is an RX Vega 64 in a custom loop? Well, it's about 1700MHz worth of fast - but is dropping the cash on a Vega waterblock worth it?

Nah. Let them circlejerk, that's what they do best. Last time I asked Hardware Unboxed about the discrepancies between his results and Mind Blank's, I got something along the lines of: "We(I assume the elite techtuber community, they all circlejerk, it's very noticeable) have tried to replicate this channel's results, but could not do it. Therefore take it with a grain of salt."

Or it is (more likely) silicon lottery.

Never said Vega 64 was a bad card, but then again, the price positions it above 1080 by 100USD and under 1080ti by 100USD, and this is done by using watercooling. This video proves Vega can do higher clocks easily, but the power draw and heat would be too much for air coolers. AFAIK, 500USD gtx1080 vs 600+USD Vega 64, you are only getting 2-5% performance increase even with a waterblock and a custom loop with a 20+% price increase which means it’s totally not worth it. AMD should seriously try to make Vega efficient on higher clock speeds at this point, or they will have a tough time. Double checked Vega 64 prices, apparently, they are all 680USD and above at the moment, which means it’s just 20-40USD under a gtx1080ti. The gtx1080ti will each the Vega 64 for lunch in any game at this point, so I think AMD still has to improve a lot of things here

Wrathinside James Mastroianni 1st off, this GPU is $650+ in my country without the water cooling parts, 2nd this frequency just breathes fire and consumes too much power 3rd a GTX 1080 FE blower with good airflow can OC to 1,900-2,000 MHz core regularly, about 7,000+ score on Superposition. This GPU could be good if you are not bothered in tweaking the card yourself, but for the majority people, it's not a good card compared to the competition.
@Bourinos02

Well, this video shows that if you use a lot of money to buy it and watercool it with a custom cooler and win silicon lottery, you can manage to be nearly identical to a 1080... For 100$ more, not including the cost of the additional cooling, and the electric bill.. So decent card, certainly, but price/performance wise, this card is just meh...

MindBlank Tech Can you please show 580, Vega56 and Vega64 with and without crossfire overclocked, undervolted and full optimized with latest adrenalin features against overclocked Volta, Xp, 1080Ti, 1080 (with and without SLI). Using games and synthetic benchmarks with Vulkan and directX12, compared with current prices and AMD recommended prices. Everyone is comparing overclocked nVidia against stock AMD. To me Xp and Volta are price fail. Current rocket pricing for AMD only shows it is market demanded and so better than nvidia.

You have made an amazing job here man! Congrats! The only thing I would have liked is seeing how much did the power draw increased. We already know that it's bananas so It's not a huge deal, which is probably why you didn't bother going that extra mile, but it would be cool to show that data too. Keep up the great work man! I don't think this channel has enough subs and views. Some of the bigger channels, like jaytwocents, now make really bad videos, with minimal effort, data and with boring content. Very nice video man You should see what one is capable of at 1800mhz, have a few vids on my channel, no benches or graphs just gameplay footage with overlays though. Strange thing is, I've just finished an upgrade on my rig to a 8700k @ 5GHz so will need to record some proper videos as my old vids all with 3770k and ddr3 but with the new hardware I can't get past 1750mhz :( . Vega 64 is a beast on water, but there are better options when you add all the money needed for a full custom loop.

MindBlank Tech no, reference blower bought on day 1. Flashed an LC bios to it which allowed me to push 1250vm and hit the 1800mhz core clock. Although I'm starting to doubt the clock reporting was accurate because I can't get it past 1750mhz without crashing on this new build.

I bought the frontiers edition LC for now, as it dropped by over 40% in price. I wasnt sure, if I really want to hold on to the card, so I thought it would be good to take the LC one, as I guess it sells better later on, as people like those cooling methods. What do you think about the LC one? As I am not planning to directly overclock it, it is fine I guess, and the 16GB of VRAM are coming on a cheap for HBM2...so I took that ooportunity although I perhaps never benefit from it. Fingers crossed: I hope, I am not disappointed. My last few decisions on graphics cards, although controversial to others opinions, always brought me on top. I had no GPU update for a long time. My HD7970 (probably my best gfx card buy ever, considering a 680 cannot run anything anymore) now is really old. I havent upgraded, because the kind of games I play. I hope, that the aging on the AMD cards will catch the 1080 completely and even compete with a 1080Ti. BTW: I am looking forward to the new drivers. 11.4 already showed a massive increase on witcher, which makes your result even cooler. Lets see, what adrenalin drivers have to offer.

just a question i also have this waterblock and had it in a loop with the eisbaer 240mm cpu cooler too with a 360mm rad on the vega, but not custom loop. just using the quick connect. my gpu is running at 55-60c and even in its own loop too. does running a full custom loop change temps by 15-20c?

hey mindblank, nice video. i use the same water block on my vega 56. and i am seeing the same issue, that it crashes at stock settings (1750MHz boost). so i think that makes it very likely that the liquid cooled cards use binned chips. did you somehow tune the pump/fan-curve? i only use a double radiator... after a while under hard load the fluid temp rises as soon as i use a high power target on the LC bios.

how much power does this actually draw now? I have a feeling that my Sapphire Nitro+ will handle the heat no worries - Im definitely hitting power limit which set at +50%VA is only 315W, I can Volt down to get 1650-1680 in superposition, but it's hitting up at that max power and crashing a lot. might be worth the bios flash.

I've seen it mentioned elsewhere that the Vega Liquid BIOS needs to read pump RPM or else it thinks the pump has failed and shuts down to protect the card. That might be the reason yours cashed with the liquid BIOS.

+magottyk Yup! Great remark! When I got my RX 480 to 1490MHz under water (AIO), people said it's totally not realistic since it's just a silicon lottery fluke. Then RX 580 came out and people were getting this on AIB cards.
@magottyk
@magottyk 6 лет назад
Funny you mention RX580 as I got mine just yesterday (red dragon 8GB) and the first thing I did was undervolt by 50mv and pushed the boost to 1420MHz from the stock overclock of 1350 without increasing the power limit and now it's showing 137Watts draw and rock solid 74FPS (Riva frame control) in Witcher 3 with high/ultra settings (no hairworks) and dips to above 60 @ 1440p which is well inside the freesync range (48-75). I haven't pushed it yet to see what the max boost I can get, but I doubt I could have done that with a cheaper end RX 480. I did get it to run with a 75mv undervolt @1440MHz but it was artifacting, the cards cooler is a bit of a liability but it's mainly noise as it's quite audible @60%, but the temps are mid 50s which I'm happy with and I've fine tuned the boost to 1380 for that FPS range for that game. The thing I'm wondering whether or not to do is to redo the thermal paste for something a little better (I use Prolimatech PK-1) as while I've still got plenty of cooling headroom, a few degrees less won't hurt.

So about the Morpheus again: You spoke about problems with the cooling of Vegas VRM, if I remember correctly. So what do I do with them ? Grab a Metal Saw and make some very tiny Passive Coolers for them or do I leave them blank? And if I leave them blank, how much RPM should my Fans do ? The highest I found is an Industrial Standart 1500-3000RPM Fan. But that would cost me 30€ each and it won't be a Silent Build, that's for sure ^^ Any Tips ? Thank you !
@MindBlank86
@MindBlank86 6 лет назад
+Fr0Zen1 ___ I didn't say anything about VRM improper cooling with the Morpheus, IIRC. Since there's direct airflow on then with the 2 fans that can be mounted on the Morpheus, I think they do great. Also, VRM on Vega cards is top notch in order to cope with the power draw. And FET's are specced to 120C max IIRC.

I've been trying to figure out if Vega 64 would be able to run stable at 1500MHz, and this vid seals the deal for me. I like Nvidia cards but Vega's seem better overall, although not as fast. I'm kinda disappointed to read that using any card with a slower card will down clock the faster card. I wanted to mix 2x Vega 64+ 1x Radeon Pro Duo 32GB, but the best clock speed attainable on pro Duo seem to be sub-1200MHz. I was hoping to at least leave the Vega's stock, but OC the Pro Duo to 1247MHz, but 1180MHz is the best I've seen.

Nice vid, thanks. Can't run 64 liquid BIOS because of 'hot spot' temps. The liquid temp caps at 70c. At your max clocks on air BIOS you are already hitting over that. This makes the liquid BIOS unstable. I have same issue. I will try different thermal paste applications to see if I can get that 'hot spot' temp down.

You can also just use stock V64 BIOS and increase the Power Limit using the soft mod to avoid that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EmMMs-5Kfq8.html

The card will begin to thermal throttle once hitting 75c+. We are already hitting 72c on 'hot spot' temps. Increasing power limit or voltage is only going to produce very minimal returns, if any.
@Najvalsa
@Najvalsa 6 лет назад
Raziel are you sure that's not just the lc bios, or that you can't adjust the temperature limit?
@raziel4381
@raziel4381 6 лет назад
Temp limit air 85c, temp limit liquid 70c. They will thermal throttle once getting inside 5 to10c of these max temps. If MindBlank is hitting over 72c already. MindBlack is hitting close to max clocks with power/voltage available on air BIOS, so reg edit or BIOS flash does not matter. Any increase in power or voltage is going to raise that 'hot spot' temp, thus thermal throttle.
@MindBlank86
@MindBlank86 6 лет назад
+Raziel Is 70C the same cap for hotspot as well? Or just core temp, excluding hotspot? I do notice a slight performance uplift from the LC BIOS, which leads me to believe there's no type of throttling going on. Or dropping timings on the HBM...

i wonder what makes the vega scale better for ultrawide gaming. Also, would a 750W power supply be able to run that system?
@TheJohdu
@TheJohdu 6 лет назад
i basically run that system and at +50% power target with the liquid cooled bios it newer draws more than 560W from the wall. with a 600W-650W PSU you'll be fine. just get a quality one.

Vega 64 has 45MB of on-chip SRAM (or so I understood), and HBM2 memory. I'd wager the higher bandwidth and on-chip memory help tremendously at that higher resolution.

+darkknight1193 Nowhere near 600-700W. Not even in peaks. But it's definitely way above GTX 1080, by more than 100W I'd say.
@darkknight1193
@darkknight1193 6 лет назад
MindBlank Tech So what's the total power consumption of the system as a whole? Has to be around 150W-200W more than GTX 1080. And depending on the chip; some reviewers have noted the RX Vega to consume over 400W. That's where made the assumption.

I kinda wanna see that graph you showed at the start with the new results just to see the difference, same with the 5 results you didn't put it it shouldn't do but gives people the wrong idea and makes it seem like the vega can't keep up with the 1080 in any game without these clocks

Not many 2017 games even bothers to take advantage of the new features the latest GPU has to bother making full use of Vega cards anyways, they resort to simpler Nvidia libraries and features at times because it saves them time and money. 2018 is where you expect to see a lot more 'next gen' games that will utilize hardware from Vega and onward...

What do you think about the EK FLUID GAMING A240R for RX Vega?
@MindBlank86
@MindBlank86 6 лет назад
+TJCCBR47 I think that for the price it's going to be an awesome kit. The 240 rad is going to do just fine at first and will be a huge leap forward from the stock air cooler and even AIB coolers. And there's always the option of switching to a bigger rad or adding an extra 120/240 for even lower temps. If you're looking to pick it up, it's a great value for a full custom water loop, for sure!
