One thing that you can do to increase the alcohol concentration while making the flame more visible is to simply add a salt either normal table salt or Epsom salts that will impart metallic ions that will make the flame glow an Orange color

Your inspiration has been fantastic. I made a copper coil lamp in a pint jar and it worked well. But I then put a SS mesh mantle with a lid on it and it worked even better. But when I put it into my version of your heater with the cake pan top and bottom, the extra heat trapped in there turned the lamp into a jet torch, burning well over 1,000° F on the top pan, burning 91% isopropyl alcohol. Thanks dude, for the help and fun!!!

Robert, have you considered attaching a something like a lantern mantle to the top where the inner copper pipe came out of the top of the plant pot? Then it could double as a plant pot heater and light source. --Great content!

Another for the steam punk collection 🙂 You could use a brass end-cap as a snuffer and reduce evaporation when not in use.

This seems to be basically the exact way that a kerosene heater works. Usually they have a roughly 6 in diameter cotton tube with mop-like fringe hanging into the kero reservoir. I may try my hand at making one out of carbon felt since they usually only last about 2 years with consistent use.

Now to just add a sand battery for the pass through to store the heat, and the ability to shut off and ignite the fuel when you wish. Excellent experiment!

Love this one. Especially the last one as I think it warms you just seeng a flame. I think its time to get ready for a cold winter if you live in Europe its better be safe than sorry but I everyone is welcome to come around if you need a cuppa and to warm your hands

I have a French LeGrillon Alcohol stove, it came with a 25mm cotton wick, I replaced it with a wick made of wood stove door gasket material. I make coffee every morning using it to heat my Moka pot , I can fry eggs Burgers, cook a pork loin in a half hour. This stove puts out heat. A small tent is warmed with one burner, adjust the flame to burn blue an little CO2 is created. Smaller heaters can be made with 1/2 inch wicks for personal warmers. Alcohol is a safe fuel, the French stoves were packed with horse hair to prevent a pool of fire forming if tipped, I use fiberglass insulation. Alcohol fire is quickly extinguished with water and will not burn on water like some fuels will do. I intend on building a stove like you designed. THANKS!

Been toying around with heat exchangers etc. . ethanol has a desire to permeate terra Cotta efficiently and naturally. I used to used crushed flower pots or an aquarium gravel made of porous material in an iron pot soaked with alcohol for plastic bending Ever thought about a wick from the carbon put in a tiny terra Cotta pot or on a bathroom tile instead it'll vaporize Fuel very well

Dear Robert, have you heard about something called H-CAT, couple of guy few years back were trying to do pot heater using HHO gas and powdered grain from catalytic converters. They were getting some fine results, and i wonder what would be Your take on it. Thanks for keeping us amazed.

What material would work better for the heater tank ?? The glass part of the heater is the weak link, I have seen these puppies just crack, explode and start a fire. Robert, would plating the copper pipe with silver metal plating on both copper pipes would increase the intensity of the fuel being vaporized before the burn. Just an idea fella. Good day.

Thanks, simple, and great! Probably a few ways to make this alot safer, maybe a metal tray that would contain the fuel if the jar cracks, more heat retaining mass around it will further protect. Would like to see your ultimate refinement of this one.

this is a beautiful thing! Do you have any idea how long that ethanol would last in that large jar? I assume Methanol could be substituted right? Methanol is better isnt it right? (because it introduces no CO if the burn is complete), or is ethanol the same in that regard?

Really 'cool' man! I have to ask though; How much fuel does it burn per block of time and for how many BTUs? ( general averages)

Would be nice to know how long this heater would burn. Maybe change the glass container to prevent a house fire. Nice to know how much heat would be needed to heat an average size room ?? This is just so COOL Robert. Would bet you that this would outperform an electric portable heater. Keep on experimenting with this idea. I am sure you will move this up a notch. Fantastic Rob, I've a huge workshop thats actually a world war 2 Navy "shed" brick built with no installation what so ever, come winter the water inside freezes up, and I'm yet to find a workable heating solution

What are the risks of carbon monoxide from this? Just wondering if you use a CO monitor to get a reading on how much is being produced. Thanks

I’ve seen a YT video warning of the danger of plant pot heaters specifically concerning flash-point ignition of the fuel. Could this be a danger with this set up given the fuel is directly below the heater?

This is really fantastic. It's reminiscent of my Aladdin lamp, which also uses a round wick, but draws air through the bottom along the inside. They burn clean, blue and very hot. I wonder if you could try something like this, maybe a third tube around the two inner tubes for drawing air?

Copper fiber is also available at Big Box Hardware Store as a Plumber's Heat Shield. I'm not so sure about the Plant Pot. It increases the heat of the ethanol storage, and I see a potential for a nasty BOOM.

I got a bit of jute webbing from b&q cut it to width and wrapped lengthways around the pipe, it's very cheap, and has been working great the last 2 days.

Beautiful in its simplicity. Have you measured temperature in a room between the wicked and mantle heaters (for example)?

i have some 3"x 12"-14" copper pipe scraps that i have been thinking of making a small heating stove from for my small teardrop camper that will burn charcoal briquettes such as you use for a BBQ cooker since copper is a great metal for absorbing, and radiating heat. can you think of any problems i might have from heating the copper with a flame in this stove, such as a poisonous gas? i have them sitting on top of my woodstove now as well as a few disc brake rotors from autos to provide additional mass for heat retention and i have no real issues, and they retain, and radiate heat better than the steel even after the fire in the stove goes out, which is what gave me the idea in the first place.

Interesting you say the coiled version doesn't work... I've just built one with the large Mason jar and it works great fortunately! For a first go I'm very pleased I will admit there's a few tweaks I will do with the second version. All that said why do you say it doesn't work well?

Does Ethanol produce smelly fumes? What is the cost per hour of fuel used and how does that compare to the cost of an electric heater producing the same warming effect?

This is top notch and love you enthusiasm Robert. The only thing i ponder over here is when you put the plant pot over the top. With the pot covering it and heating the jar containing the fuel, does this pose a potential problem of exploding some way? Could the heat cause the jar to crack , spilling fuel all over the place and igniting? Just a bit paranoid about giving it a go in the greenhouse but burning my house down on the process. Thanks.

Some great ideas, liking the copper with holes, copper pipe not something I have to hand, ideas for other household items to substitute? I tried similar setup with a camping heater, which is the same idea as your mantle, 16 quid on Amazon.

hey there Robert what your experimenting with is basically what I have in as a heating system in my house ,it's called "a brick central" the fuel I use is heating oil it's gravity fed and the reservoir is fed in from the base and the control is is done via a standard oil control valve that are used on a aga it's made by a company called HESS . the reservoir is a bit like a cooking pot a number of holes are around the base it also uses a balancing air valve all of this is done without any electric it allso has a coiled water pipe that heats my water by using the thetmo siphon principal.

You have me curious now. what, if I may ask, is the fuel consumption rate on this experiment?

Seems for the first undrilled tube design, the inner tube could have a pipe cap on the end to prevent spills - unless evaporation inside that tube is a major component of the fuel supply.

The carbon felt is a plumber's item, that you put behind your pipe so you don't burn what's behind it, as you apply a flame for soldering.

Asking if any problems with ceramic pot getting too hot surrounding glass fuel jar. Any boiling pressurized fuel issues. Sorry if this was asked before -- wanted your thoughts of fire danger. Was going to make something like this BUT leave an air gap to keep fuel reservoir temp below flash or exploding vapor temperature. With heat going up into ceramic pots and heat sinks ( beers cans or steel cans with cut Finns) Thank You !!!!!🎉.

Plus, metal gets cold fast. Paraffin candle & 4 clay fleer pots. They must all fit into each other, one up, one down, one up with tin can lid folded into a U, then one up with hole on top, another time can lid , U shaped. Will burn for 3 days & keep chill out of air.

Bobby old boy ! Could you show the various temps (in Farenhite for us Yanks ) of the stages of your heater/lamp ? You could use a hand held thermo. that has a red laser beam. Relatively cheap and available. I have one and really like how I can get the temps. of doors, windows, ceilings, heat vents, and more, with it. Well worth the price ! You probably have one already ! I never trust glass of ceramic for burning. It inevitably cracks or breaks. Usually I just modify to use exclusively metal aspects aside from fuel and wick. Even as a base, I use makeshift cooling fins, which only increases the heat output for a given area.
