Dear Melissa, Andy, Oliver and captain Jack, This is what I love to do. Working with wood is so relaxing and working with teak in special thanks to the nice smell of teak. When everything will be vanished you won’t see the difference with new teak. I had the honor to work with Palissander because I found an old wood yard here in the Netherlands where they’ve stored huge old parts of trees sawed in wide planks and stored outside under a roof with spacers in between every plank. In a first glance all the wood there looks unusable but I already knew better. So I bought 2 of these huge Palissander planks and these were heavy. Vertaalresultaat When I removed the top layer with an electric thickening machine in the workshop, I did not know what I saw. There was spanking brand new Palissander ready to use. So my friend and I made what we had to make and the scraps were sold to a wood carver so nothing was thrown away. Nowadays there’s almost worldwide a total import stop for all these types of wood but the wood yard still has a lot in stock from some trees of more than 250 years old what’s laying there from generations of fathers and sons. Isn’t that interesting? Willeke and I look forward to your next vlog and send you love from the Netherlands

Regardless of whether or not finances are available for new teak, the fact that you and your team are taking the time to repurpose great old teak is phenomenal; it's nice to see this kind of effort in an otherwise 'disposable society'. Think of the satisfaction when the job is completed!!

Gods, I am so envious of your children. They will live the best of their lives on a beautiful ship, seeing the wonders of this world. But they will also have the opportunity to have the experiences that will make them more reliant people in the future. The trials of living aboard a ship will temper them into the type of people who will succeed in life. Regarding your woodwork, your craftsmanship is improving with every episode, and I look forward to each episode. Repairing the old soles is a great idea. Teak is an enduring wood and will last for many decades, holly less so. The care you are lavishing on these soles will pay dividends in the end and will make your boat more beautiful.

HI Andy, in the past I've had very good results by using caustic soda and water as a soak. I treated 64 kitchen door hinges with 80 years of paint to remove, left to soak overnight and hosed off the next day. BEAUTIFUL result, it took the paint off and didn't damage the hinge at all. I used a plastic container for the "soak" and didn't dissolve it at all. I've used it on brass as well with excellent results. If you are in doubt, try a small amount to get the mix right. (I winged it by guessing). And as an aside, if you add cornflour to thicken the mix, it makes for an excellent and cheap paint stripper. Hope this helps.

Re-using the Teak and Holly is the best idea because to source wood of the same quality would be very expensive or nigh on impossible in this day and age. My first thought on the brass should be spot on.. normal vinegar cut with distilled water, as long as it was not lacquered, with lacquer a little more but it will work as well. the acid nature will clean the brass nicely and then it is about coating it with wax or oil. it may be bright and shinny for a while, but it will be on your adventures that it ages. that will be a nice contrast image to see in 3 years.

Dear Sailing Melody family 👍👌👏 Very well done again (video and work). Of course it's always the best thing to reuse/upcycle materials if possible. I'm totally with you. Additionally I'm pretty sure that your sole boards are very dense teak. Wood like this is usually not available any more because nowadays they unfortunately don't let teak trees become big/old before harvesting. 2) My way to go "wood" have been sending the boards through a drum sander. Less material gets taken off than in a planer. Additionally: No harm can be done to planer blades. 3) I was pretty impressed by how you are able to handle your electric planer. I would have had to use a belt sander (making a big mess with the dust of course). Because otherwise I would have taken off too much material. I simply have too less experience with hand planers so please allow me to ask if the blades cut through the varnish/clear coat without getting harmed respectively dull. By the way: A lot of years ago an old carpenter told me two things about electric planer blades: You can sharpen the blades yourself. The best way to do this is wet and with a supportive jig/bracket (a DIY or a bought one). 2) If you give them away to get sharpened, let them harden the blades. It's not that expensive but after the treatment they cut better and stay sharp much longer. As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health in particular. To all of you and especially your ill friend.
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 5 месяцев назад
That's super interesting info.i set the planer to take off just 0.5mm so to take off the varnish and minimise the amount of wood being lost. But they're still very very thick boards. Using the sander might have been better but would have taken much much longer
@Chr.U.Cas2216
@Chr.U.Cas2216 5 месяцев назад
@@SailingMelody Thanks, glad you liked it. Thanks also for replying and especially for giving a heart to my comment. 2) Of course I assumed that you would only take off 0.5 mill per strike. What I don't get (and can't do) is, how you are able to start in the middle of a board. I see this all the time while watching the expert shipwrights at channel Tally Ho. But I can only electro plane something by starting at the beginning of a board. If I try to do it for instance in the middle, I earn bumps/concave dents. But lets forget about that, I obviously simply have to practice more. As always I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next video. Sincerely yours.

@@Chr.U.Cas2216 oh. I'm not sure how I do that. I've done quite a lot of this kind of work over the years but am definitely not a shipwright or expert. But I guess my previous work has given me some experience on the tools I suppose :)

Thanks guys.. not sure with them hinges and fixtures.. probably start gently with a sodium bicarbonate wash, and work up to something more aggressive if needs be.. although the stain is would go as light as possible.. otherwise it’s too dark.. i know SY mistress, put a thin layer of rubber down over the stringers to stop squeezing (or at least minimise it) The screws you’re probably better off buying new, but not cheap hardware new, quality Brass new, only because it’s so much quicker.. and remind Mel to “accidentally” drop some mouthwash in that bilge, does two things, 1) mosquitoes hate it, 2) seems to stay minty for ages.. we actually use it around the house if we get a stinky drain for some particular reason, + it’s non toxic for young Oliver.. cheers guys! 😊

Im amazed youre using a planer to clean the boards up, we all have our own methods but you really should invest in a decent random orbital 6". With some 40 grit you would have taken them down just as quick but more evenly
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 5 месяцев назад
I have a very good MIRKA random orbital and was using it a lot. But setting the planer to 0.5mm was perfect to take the varnish off
@traceysmith6964
@traceysmith6964 5 месяцев назад
bit drastic lol, if i ever have anything in a state out come the 40 grits onto the sander and just wack them back.
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 5 месяцев назад
@@traceysmith6964 yeah I know what you mean But the planer was just SO fast. The old varnish was pretty hard stuff and would have taken a while to sand off even with 40 grit and with so many planks to do I would have gone through loads of pads. But yeah that might have been a better way to do it. Anyway, it’s done now. I’ll be sending them even once they’re laid down anyway

Brasso works pretty good on brass. Might need a buffing wheel on a drimmel. The cheap wool wheel ones work fine with a white paste stick. Old t-shirt will get the white paste off afterwards.

The vinegar and baking soda with some salt works but is quite a lot of work . If you mix some of the above mi sturdy in distilled water then put it in an old crock pot on high in 24 hours they will be renewed and only need a rinse and brush up with a soft synthetic brush , if you want them to stay bright wipe them down with lacquer thinner then coat them with spray cans of brass coat lacquer.

@@SailingMelody going fine thanks. We got an apartment in the mountains for a couple of months to get the dogs and cat off the boat while I got jobs done. Just finished a lithium conversion from tired old AGM batteries. What a game changer that has been. We are keeping the boat in the water to take advantage of the quieter sailing conditions now the season is finished. Probably a quick haul out in March for anti foul and essential maintenance but otherwise most of the big jobs are done now. We seem to have been adopted by another stray cat. Poor thing was starving to death but is recovering well.

You're doing a great job. The hand planer is better for that job, in that a benchtop "planer" (thicknesser) hates sticky labels. You would have had to clean the rollers every time you forget to take off a label - no fun ! Also, the risk of nicks in the blades when using 'benchtops' on reclaimed timber is too high - blades in 'handhelds' are much smaller and cheaper.

Perhaps use 6 mm marine ply as a substrate and glue the teak and holly on top. This gives you a margin to refinish those sole boards again without them becoming too bouncy.

Citric Acid Does Brass great its cheap and simple i use it on all my brass parts on Tilley Lamps. just make up a hot water solution in a bowl and leave to soak. Citric Acid also works on cleaning toilets ie Heads it eats away at lime scale i even use Citric Acid in my washing machine to clean the heating element and the pipes. put it in your kettle 2 tea spoons and water and watch lime scale float away and its also Bio-Degradeable

Soak these hinges in straight Vinegar. The answer to everything is Vinegar. Mix up 1:1 Vinegar and water with like 12 drops of peppermint essential oil and its a window cleaner, degreaser and pest repentant (they hate the peppermint). Any mold and nasty smells? Vinegar solution (Chlorine only bleaches mold spores, Vinegar kills them). And it's CHEAP!!! Soak the hinges in Vinegar‼️ When they loosen up, hit 'em with 3 in 1 oil.

Hello, I was watching your video and the maintenance of the interior cover, I ask you: Wouldn't it be better, after the teak planks are cleaned and polished, to do a treatment with teak oil or linase? It is the floor and it is not recommended that it be varnished or in some cases I have seen them laminated, then I see them again skated like the Russian dancer Baryshnikov. Wouldn't it be better to treat with linase or teak oil? Good job
