Floral foam comes in two main varieties - Oasis - which holds fluid as shown and Sahara which does not. Be sure to get the right one. Never thought I'd be sharing information I learned in my first job 30+ years ago.

Içve used those forever and I still have no idea what those things are called! I saw another guy on RU-vid bend the triangle bits all the way in. Not only were they air holes, but they formed a little raised stand to set the pot on above the flame.

What is the metal band that is used to hold the mesh down on the sugar jar section?

Great video and idea!! Well done! Just a thought would this be safe INDOORS!? (Given its burning alcohol that's ALREADY vapourised I can't imagine this giving off much in the way of Carbon monoxide if anything at all? Given its a clean fuel anyway and it's vapourising before ignition as far as we know!? - Or am I mistaken?) A Carbon monoxide detector reading might be useful to see what levels there are if is safe for indoor use in emergency power outage?? Keep up the fantastic work! Cheers from London 👍😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

I have done it many times with a CO meter and have rarely gotten over 9ppm CO, which is quite acceptable. Just crack a door every couple of hours for a few seconds.

Really enjoy Roberts content - I'm always slightly worried that people actually try these contraptions out and burn their houses down (or shed). Reminds me of Johnny Ball from back in the day.

Surly it wouldn’t be that difficult to add a external lever so that the two meshes can be separated on pushing the lever without having to dismantle the burner and cover ?

So you could probably modify the wicking arrangement with the carbon felt and a larger reservoir? How might one control the heat out put? Instead of moving the wick up and down, might it be more convenient to move a mantle? Perhaps a telescopic or sliding mantle.

I wonder if when the Oasis foam gets low on fuel in it will it then start to melt or burn itself? A candle wick without wax will burn up. One thing I have been thinking about doing is to source some of the Oasis and use it to cool carbon arc rods(tightly bound side by side) by filling it with distilled water. Evaporative cooling. Then lay on top of them battery carbon rod centers. Heat the top side, the Oasis cools the bottom side and see if that will produce current. I figure if the top layer of rods has a different impedance than the bottom rods then it may make a thermopile much like your paper and pencil one only larger. I don't know, but may be worth a try to find out as it would not be quite as fragile.

@@ThinkingandTinkering I may do it a bit later. Being a caretaker for my mother right now due to a cardiac event so it would be after things settle down. Thanks Rob!
