WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.

I like how when you were breaking off chunks for heat treating you were basically bashing off really chunky laminar cores, some of them were even ok to use as blades as is 👍 Edit: 11:12

Thanks for noticing. I think less than 1% of my viewers know what a laminar core is.

Thanks. Everybody wishes that. I had to drive many hours and talk to lots of people. Some guys will even pack up all their stuff, sell their house, and move to an area that has free flint, chert, or obsidian. Where there is a strong enough will, there's a way.
@austinlong7700
@austinlong7700 7 месяцев назад
@@KnapperJackCrafty that’s very true. If there is a will, there is a way. I live on a family farm in southern ohio. The farm has been in my family for many generations. I’d be giving up a lot to move. I just want my cake and I want to eat it too lol. I’m 3hrs from nethers farm and 3 hours away from Kentucky hornstone. I’ve done some investigating on the hornstone and have made it clear that I don’t want to sell it and I found one guy who is supposed to turn me onto a hornstone spot in a month or so. I can’t get info out of people, which I get it because who can you trust? but in all honesty I own my own business and work on a farm. I’m happy with my finances and I’m not looking to add another headache into my life lol. I just want somewhere I can go collect rock from time to time for my self. If certain people get ahold of where a good location is with rock it will be cleaned out very quickly. I haven’t made it to any knap ins to meet people face to face yet but I hope to make it to flint ridge knap in on memorial weekend and hopefully I can make a few honest connections.

Maybe a mild steel, weight forward, wooden handled, bopper for early stage spalling of tough rock? That was rough on the copper bopper, ha.

I notice your new 9 ounce bopper seems more easily damage/depressed in use. It is possible to buy small zinc anodes for boats and zinc is just about, As heavy as lead, Melt near the same temp as lead, But is strong as copper You may be well advantaged to, clean inside a copper bopper head, Melt and fuse 9 ounces of zinc inside, I do not have the chunks on which to use a zinc loaded bopper to test the idea.

Have you ever tried the solid head boppers for the tougher stone thay would save wear and tear on your lead field boppers.

Yes, I've tried solid copper and they wear down quickly as well.
