Hi everyone, if you missed the COS review mentioned in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j5V_Tjo7FAs.html I also added some links in the description, for you to see second-hand & new options of these garments (I pre-filtered the results based on how I would shop for myself). And now the big question: after watching this video, which trench coat would you rather put your money on?

I bought my Burberry in DC 31 years ago for $1,500. I wear it throughout spring and fall and some days in-between. It has been cleaned countless times and no longer sheds rain quite as well, but it shows almost no signs of wear. At this rate, they'll be able to bury me in it!

I worked with a woman who, when she graduated from University in the 1970s, received a Burberry trench coat from her father. She still wore it when she retired in 2015. It looked great. So when my daughter graduated from University in 2018, I bought her a Burberry trench coat. I am a dressmaker, and I am very happy to know that any time a button gets loose, she takes it to the store and it is repaired for free. We are both happy with the investment.

I have a London Fog trench coat with a zip in lining for colder weather from around the same era. Has a touch of the big shoulder pad look but not so over the top Dynasty looking that it's too bad. Not nearly as stylish and upscale as your Burberry, but well made and still in use some 40 years later. My son loves it and is always trying to "borrow" it from me.

@@silvasilvasilva Luck plays a huge part, especially if you don't have a lot of money to spend. London second-hand shops have got very pricey. The thrift shops in Paris and Amsterdam still carry designer labels at affordable prices and, often, they are helping charities. it is really useful to learn the reason behind why some aspects are better quality, and how they affect the garment. You cannot always find a garment where everything is impeccable so it is good to be able to judge what aspects of quality will be most important to prioritise for you. for example if an issue is mostly aesthetic or if it will make the whole thing fall apart.

Nice video! I’m a fellow designer and just wanted to make a correction on one statement - the small buttons on the inside of the Burberry coat are not to cover the thread only. The main purpose of this button is to add stability to the front button so it doesn’t “flop”. It’s a common technique used in outerwear making (mainly) where larger and heavier buttons are used and they need to lay even against the fabric.

Now I research and examine items more closely before purchasing. As a direct result, I would much rather wait and save to buy quality these days, or preloved/secondhand, over any fast fashion items. It most certainly helps to know what to look for, many thanks Justine. One of your Australian supporters 😊💓

I waited almost 8 years to allow myself to buy a Burberry trench coat. I wouldn’t even try on other trench coats, because I knew I would never justify buying a Burberry after that, so I waited. It’s an amazing piece of clothing, the comfort level is just great. The pockets are huge, they hold so much and never look bulky. The small details like the hook on the front, the gun flap, the neck strap... everything was designed for the military and is still very useful and cool today. The fit is so good, the garment is ... lush, it gives an exquisite feeling, that is worth every penny!

Hi Justine, I do seek out vintage - often from my Mom’s extensive closet, because the quality and craftsmanship is wonderful - I have not been much of a fast fashion girl ( though the pieces I have bought are still worn several years later) - but even the high street brands (eg. Cos, Banana Republic) have significantly decreased their quality over time to have more frequent sales - it’s difficult to find that quality middle price point😔
@metalporkchop

So true. I used to love Banana Republic, and still have pieces from 20+ years ago, but I stopped shopping there a few years back because the quality became ridiculous. In 2016 I reordered the same dress 4x, and don't know how any of them past quality control.

I just looked at Burberry trench coats in store this weekend. They felt good quality but I was a bit underwhelmed for the price, they didn't wow me any more than a mid-high range good quality trench would. I think I will buy one second hand though, more worth $1000 to me than $2000.

I do look at quality of construction and materials but can't afford commercially made quality most of the time. I wore good quality hand-me-down coats (from family) in my youth and have made my own winter coats since I was in my early twenties (I'm 67 now). Canadian winters require good quality and the best coat I ever had was made by an Inuit person and originally gifted to my sister. I still have it for the most bitterly cold days. I really appreciate that you take the time to provide this kind of information to consumers. Thank you.

I just bought a second hand Austin Reed trench coat with a removable wool lining last weekend for $35! It is 100% cotton for the shell and 80% wool/20% polyester for the lining. It is my favorite brand and I’m sad they went out of business. I have many pieces of theirs which are nearly 30 years old and look brand new! Classic tailoring never goes out of style. ❤️ I loved your perspective on what makes a garment quality versus cheap fast fashion. I’d love to see more critiques like that in the future, as I do not understand stitching or how various fabrics will perform in a garment. Thanks for all you do! Your information on sustainability has helped me while building a new capsule wardrobe in my new size. The garments are natural fibers, and I told a friend who is doing a similar purge! You have lit a spark over here!

Got myself a new Burberry a few years ago, got it adjusted in shoulders and arms by Burberry for free - so now it is the one coat the completely fits me. Great explanation video, how the price differences happen. Thank you.

Brands across all ends of the economic spectrum do this. Search for DW fast fashion, they investigated the fast fashion industry. The most shocking thing to me was the amount of clothing H&M/Zara etc make that go directly to a land fill… brand new clothes never sold never worn… directly to the land fill. I don’t know what’s worse LV/ Burberry destroying old stock or H&M/ Zara doing the same??? It’s all about controlling the market and planned obsolescence a business practice that goes back to the 1920s Almost every manufacturer of any product you can think of is guilty of this, from clothes computers ,cars, appliances. To me the biggest difference between a Burberry coat vs a H&M coat is… the chances of the Burberry coat going to a landfill post consumer purchase is exponentially lower due to perceived value. In fact, before I buy any “luxury” product I check the used resale market prices. By doing so I can estimate my projected loss or gain after wearing the item for a few years. Some items I have lost a little money on some items I have made really good money. What matters most is that the item didn’t go to a land fill and it’s service life continues with a new owner.

Raglan sleeves are an essential point for me. They are more comfortable in outerwear. Otherwise there are 2 layers of seams at the shoulders which become too bulky. Set-in sleeves are fine for dresses or blouses, but not on jackets or coats, imo.
@tomjones2157

Raglan sleeves are good on wider bigger shoulders if you have the volume to fill them out. But they are too heavy, bulky and uncomfortable on smaller shoulders shoulders. Smaller shoulders suit tailored cuts.

I try to select good quality clothes and I sew, so I know some things to look for. I appreciate that you share your professional knowledge. One thing about womens' outerwear is that many, even good quality garments, lack practical details, especially inside pockets. I think it is possible to design a coat with inner pockets even for the gender with a bust. I often just want to put my wallet and keys in the pocket and not use a hand bag.

Thank you for this wonderful video, Justine. It is so important to be reminded (or learn) to distinguish good from bad quality these days. One small detail to add: the small inner buttons on the burberry coat are not just for optical reasons. My grandma taught me the absolute basics of mending clothes by hand, and she taught me to always add these so called counter or stay buttons to heavy duty clothes because they prevent the buttons from ripping off too easily.

I have two Barbour jackets and they are superb. I have the Beadnell and a limited edition waxed riding jacket with custom cotton lining from 2013. The riding jacket is the coat I wear all year-round; it's so versatile, lightweight and has a beautiful shape to it. Normally you would re-wax your jacket every year but I've gone for two years now without re-waxing and it's been fine so far. Barbour is your everyday essential jacket and I used to work for a country-wear shop with people coming in having had their Barbour for over 30 years and more.
