Anesty 8582D (£55) is identical to this one and comes with a selection of soldering iron tips, desoldering iron heads and tools. I just bought one and tested the temperature with my Hakko 191 soldering iron thermometer (£9). For the soldering iron, a nominal (displayed) temperature of 300 C was actually 325 C (an error of +25 C); nominal 325 was actually 350 C (error +25 C); nominal 350 C was 385 C (error +35) and nominal 400 was actually 436 C (error of +36 C). Of course every soldering station will have different errors.

Thank you very much for reviewing this machine, my wife just bought me one for my birthday. Being a noobie it’s good to get the opinion of someone who knows heck of a lot more than I do. Mine, in the U.K. did come with a selection of tips and a pair of tweezers.

Brilliant design decision - the tray that holds the wet sponge - rusts! As I spotted the 2nd time I got this out.

Thanks for the teardown, Buddy. The build quality on that unit is quite good and that's good to see. The warning about the SCR potentially turning on while unattended is an important one. I saw a different hot air unit go up in flames, likely from that very failure, so the safety issue is real. One important caveat regarding the main power switch, though. Whether you install a switch like in the vid or use an external switch or power strip, be sure to let the heater's fan complete its cool down cycle before cutting the power or it could also be a fire hazard. That's probably the reason they didn't put a main switch, so the fan could do its thing. Another improvement to the station that you can try out is to install some gray or blue filters over the LED displays. It'd greatly improve their contrast.
@gwav1a

I dont see the danger in cutting the power input whilst the fan is still running- whatever the temperature the air heating element is at power cut off will not be exceeded because there is no more energy input to the system- where does the danger come from?

Another thing I've noticed is the iron connection is 6-wire compared to the more common 5-wire. I see the reason for this is a SW-200D tilt/vibration sensor in the iron housing. Looks like this functions as an "in-use" sensor to take the iron out of idle mode when it is removed from its holder.
@uhmgawa1435

More fun stuff.. I bought another unit as a spare on sale for $46 which I noticed had a complete redesign of the PCB relative to the unit shown in this video. Looks to be substantially improved and with some opaque FMD (who?) SOIC microcontroller directly on the board. This particular unit has an AC mains SPST switch which definitely seemed like an improvement though obviously an afterthought as the rear was drilled out to accept a round 20mm switch. Well until you realize the switch opens the neutral not the mains hot line. This is just a copy of the original DIN connector (wrong choice of gender) design where when hot air or iron is disconnected you have 24VAC or 120/240VAC sitting on those pins to accidentally meet the user. So rather than move the SPST on the neutral to hot I picked up the same switch in a DPST version and rewired to switch both AC mains. Another thing is those "couldn't possibly be made cheaper" screws threading into the ABS case were starting to stress discolor it which IME eventually fractures the ABS. I drilled out the holes and epoxied in brass insert nut to mate with M3 screws. I suppose that should be done for the front PCB and transformer mounting as well but I stopped with the case alone.

keep all the soldering equipment and gear connected to a switch that goes on and off with the bench lights. if you have high power devices, custom make a "power panel" using large contactors :)

This is exactly how I have been operating for years, and it is such good peace of mind. One thing I did as well though is remove the power switches to my lights, leaving only the main switch that turns everything off. This prevents someone from turning my lights off without me knowing and thinking the bench is powered down.

That lack of an AC power switch is a definite safety issue Buddy. Well done pointing that out especially for the newcomers who may be buying something like this as a first time soldering/rework station. Like a lot of the stuff coming in now from China, it does the job and meets a price point that fits the bill for people starting out with a limited budget. Somebody certainly missed the boat as far as that switch is concerned though. 73 Doug.

I have a 3 in one soldering station Model 853D. Mine has the soldering iron heat gun and comes with a variable voltage power supply and cost $74 with free shipping. So far I haven't found too many limitations with mine just checking your video out to see how Bang good compares to mine from another manufacturer. Your soldering Iron only came with one tip? Mine came with multiple tips for different operations plus a bag of heat gun tips as well seems they skimped on yours pretty much. Mine has a power switch at the back so yeah I can see why it was only $60 but for what it is as long as all the controls work its good for a beginner. You know I buy resistors from China as well never thought to test them but after seeing this I am gonna test mine out before I use them. Thanks for the tip

It should be easy to add a power switch since the enclosure is made of plastic and it looks like there are some space at the back. I've one of this stations, different brand, but the circuit looks similar. I added a heat sink to the power transistor that controls the heat gun motor since it was running extremely hot on my unit, it burned my fingers when I took it apart by the first time.

Hmm, looks like those yellow and violet bands should be orange-orange. Probably 3.3M resistors that got painted with the wrong identification. Guess that's a good station for someone starting out. Personally I can't stand cheap soldering stations. It's the most used tool on any bench and the one thing you should invest the most that you can into. Cheapest thing I ever owned was Weller and did nothing but upgrade from them over the years. I think that's probably what gives most people learning to solder the most problems, their equipment. For people like us that have hundreds of thousands if not millions of solder joints under our belt we could probably solder with a hot coat hanger. The newbie however struggles with inferior equipment.

I think you're missing the point of his video. He clearly states that it could be of great use for a beginner. It's most valuable for a seasoned veteran to review an item like this and give his opinion on its viability for use by a beginner so they don't waste their money on some unknown untested lower cost-entry level product that doesn't work. I was fortunate at an early age to have a veteran school me on quality tools, not everyone does. Hopefully this helps some newbie watching buy something they can trust. Great job Buddy, nice video!

Great video Buddy, I would do the same thing by adding a switch on the back. The only thing I do not like about this is there does not seem to be a setting on it to switch to Fahrenheit, I am from the good OLD school. OH YEA, resistors from China, I ordered 1000 1/2 watt resistors 1% and most all of them were way off and some of the colors were off as well. The resistors were on a strip with 10 resistors on each and the values were marked on the paper tape strip. They were cheap...I wonder why..LOL

@19:26 Appears there was a design alteration where the hot air wand switch was changed from SPST to DPST and now cuts one leg of AC power to the wand. Hope that's L and not N but I haven't taken off a schematic yet. It is a bit of a mixed bag design wise with the usual chinese approach of ignoring PCB layout clearances where some components had to be installed tilted to fit. Electrolytic caps hugging heat sinks, the wand holder being riveted to the plastic case with no metal backup washers, roughly stamped metal screws threading directly into plastic posts -- you just know you'll eventually be fixing that. Wires soldered into switch QC tabs where I guess a 1-cent crimped QC connector was going to break the bank. Oh and don't toss a scrap of heat shrink over that madness to insulate and give some strain relief. OTOH the external connectors for soldering and hot air wand are a plus as are the cables for both which are long enough that I'm not wanting to replace them and are either silicone or equiv. rather that the cheap stiff PVC which usually substituted. I'd still add a main AC switch as you've done for safety and to avoid sucking energy when idle. Interesting the uC firmware decides to blink the "--- ---" at you to remind of this design gaffe. This is a knock-off of repackaged knock-off designs. The only remotely detectable shred of chinese original design contribution is that heat wand which I expect was thunk up by someone with a surplus of cast off CPU/GPU cooling fans decades ago looking for a use other than dumpster food. Can't help but give kudos to factoring out a relatively expensive air pump in the base along with plumbing between it and the wand, with a 50-cent sleeve bearing fan. It works far better than it should.

Buddy, love your videos. can't wait to see what you are into next. I bought one of these soldering stations. Now they cost $90.00. The soldering iron works great! The hot air blower is intermittent at best with the blower on for second then off for a few seconds, then back on for a second, then off, and so on until the closer just stays off. Sometimes when I tried to just get it to work the blower didn't get hot or anything. Now the place smells like hot plastic and the unit probably shouldn't be used or trusted. Less that three months old as of March 13, 2019. Disappointed with it. Soldering iron still works. I'm not a beginner, I thought it would be good for occasional use. Probably not. Quality control isn't their forte. I turn it off with a switched plugstrip when not in use.

I'm very interested in getting one of these units or similar. We can get the same unit 240V in Australia from between $81.00 and $120.00.(BIG difference) I have to see what extra parts come with the expensive one or what doesn't come with the cheaper one. Out of curiosity, why would there be a need for the mains power to go to the P.C.B.? Wouldn't the whole thing running from the secondary side of the transformer? As soon as the RADIO SHOP MAN mentioned that there was no mains power switch on the back I thought to myself, I hope there is room inside for a switch. Surprise Surprise Surprise (Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.). Excelent video except for the closeup of your knuckles. Those resistors. Is the fourth band silver 10% they are close to within speck. appendum edit....Bought the station as a fathers day gift from my wife to me. I tried it out on a couple of things with both the heat gun and soldering iron. seames to work good. best solder station I have owned.. only one actually. several irons over the years. this one seems to be just as good as the other ones, with better thermal control.

Hi, enjoyed the review. I was curious if there was any way described in the paper that came with it to change the display from C° to F°? Thank you!
