5000m of altitude incline in only 180km of distance? That’s Montenegro! We spend a week in this mountainous country in September 2022, cycling south to north. Coming from Albania, we immediately noticed a change in vegetation….and with greener valleys and lakes or ponds at the wayside, also an increase of mosquitoes! These little devils hunted us whilst we were sweating like we were sitting in a Finnish sauna when climbing the first mountains in Montenegro.
The adventures continued when we booked a accommodation to shower off the sweat (and tears 😉) of an exhausting stage. When we arrived we were faced by a little room without running water….the area was cut off from water supply due to a drought!
And if this was not enough (and in great contradiction) the next day we were forecd to stay another night in the water-free accommodation, since crazy thunderstorms flooded the area.
To finish our tumultuous stay in Montenegro, just 10km before crossing the border to Bosnia we were faced with our first flat tire after almost 3500km on the road.

You two are such excellent company. Alex was non stop chatter, I feel I belong with you on your voyage. These countries with mines, very scary. Take care.

When hauling a bike it is easier to attach an old cut tube around your hips and the other end to the seat post. I also attach a plastic or metal hook to the ends to make attachment easy. The springy rubber makes it less tiresome as the pressure isnt constant.

Thanks for not sugar-coating the hard bits! Days can be tough - sometimes the terrain, sometimes the weather, sometimes your own mental state. And it is important for would-be bike tourers to know that it isn't all down-hills and soft campsites. But, with luck, the good outweighs the bad. And wow, a 1000m downhill erases a lot of the despair getting to the top! On those mornings when the tent is soaking wet, do you pack wet and the lay out to dry somewhere along the route or do you wait until dry to pack?
@biking_beyond
@biking_beyond Год назад
We always packed it wet, since we unpacked it every night again ☺️ we figured ~8-10h of being wet wouldn’t hurt. And we got the tip from experienced bike tourers to not have a long break during the day, so… 😄 & thank you so much for your comment! I always feel a bit unsure wether showing the reality rather than a sugar cited paradise is the right thing to do in the internet 😄

@@biking_beyond Makes sense to not have to wait and not have a long break. And yes, I think your videos show a good balance of joys and ...not so much joys... Thanks for making them!

Making them brings me lots of joy actually, even though it’s no top production (obviously 😂)

I am surprised you didn't invest in a water filtration device because of your travels through so many countries!?
@biking_beyond
@biking_beyond Год назад
We had a water filter with us for emergencies but never needed it. In the European Union you can drink water from The tap. Outside the EU we simply bought water (mostly in gallons and filled our bottles from these.) In Albania for example, where you can not drink from the tap, there were almost zero water sources along our route, so a water filter doesn’t help either (especially when wild camping)😅

Was there no water at all? Could you not have a water filter or two? We carry 3 ways to purify water depending how questionable the water is.

Inclines can be terrible, so hard that it's not a pleasure to ride any more for me. That's why I recently decided to travel by ebike. Sure, it's not so environmentally friendly but at least it's better than a car.
@biking_beyond
@biking_beyond Год назад
That sounds cool, actually I am thinking about getting an e-bike myself (mostly for commuting to work etc), what brand do you have? Any recommendations? 😄
@alafenetre81
@alafenetre81 Год назад
@@biking_beyond German e-bikes are great (Kahlkoff, Velo De Ville, Cube or Riese Und Müller) but Giant is good too. I have not bought it yet because of the winter coming, but will buy it in early 2023. Since I want to travel with it I need a battery with a big range (meaning, it's expensive!) , but if you just want to commute with it, it can be much cheaper.

You had quite a meltdown from approx 2:10. Climbing mountains is all part of cycle touring. You just have to adjust your expectations. The rubbish all over the countryside and in the NP was disgusting. Unfortunately this all too common in backward primitive countries like the Balkans. They are so ignorant and don't care about our planet. You should try cycle touring in Taiwan. it is very beautiful, clean and every one is so friendly. There is good cycling provision on the roads. You have to like climbing mountains though. They have many very very steep ones. You can avoid them by cycling around the edge of the island which is what most tourists do, but I didn't. Taroko Gorge is very beautiful. From Wuling at the top around 3,500m it is a tremendous long descent through the gorge at the bottom then emerging at Hualien on the East Coast of Taiwan.
