I'm British and I've seen a good deal of the UK, but it's watching videos made by Americans who've visited or live in the UK that make me appreciate what we have. It's great to see your perspective. If you listen to the news, you'd think the UK is going up in flames! It really isn't. Most people are genuinely nice. It's easy to forget that.

Had a university friend from Illinois, he said one one of the great things about living in the UK is having Holiday Pay with a set amount of days off you have to take and also not having to pay to see a GP when your not feeling well. He went to work sick and was surprised when they sent him home and paid him! Surprised these were not mentioned in the video.

Agree with all of those. And there are many others from the weather (yes, I know it's usually criticised, but I love all the seasons, the cozy firesides in winter and the fact that we don't have crazy extremes of weather), the absence of dangerous wildlife, kettles (!) and the beautiful and very varied countryside with charming country lanes in abundance here in the UK. I feel blessed and grateful to live here.

Hi. Just a generalisation but it appears that many in the US don’t understand that a pub and a bar are not the same thing (we have both here in the UK). Pub is short for public house, and that tells you what its purpose is. It’s a place to gather with family, friends, neighbours to socialise (and that can include children). As you said, it’s not just about alcohol.

No. 10 Right to Roam. No, you cannot just cross anywhere. There are footpaths that you must adhere to. If a path crosses over a farmer's field, that farmer cannot close it. Although, in certain circumstances they can close it, but they have to re-route that walk. You cannot just walk onto someone's property if there's no official trackway. You buy an ordnance survey map, and you will see walks/trackways galore. Also, leaflets at, say, The Rambling Association. They'll have lots of walks.

Don't forget the wildlife ,and I don't mean chucking out time from the pubs on Friday night.

Kettles! Boils water in minutes for a cup of HOT tea 😉….Fresh bread that tastes of bread not cake… chocolate….clotted cream teas….seeing sheep in a field….cheese - lots of it….salad cream/Branston pickle/chutnies…..being able to drink a glass of wine in the park when having a picnic …. Pork pies …..crisps that are actually crispy and taste of what they are meant to! ….dunking biscuits in a cup of tea….eating an afternoon tea of little sandwiches and dinky sized cakes …. Eating fish n chips from a paper container, whilst sitting on a bench on a seaside promenade and watching the waves (and trying to fight off killer seagulls that are trying to nick a chip 😳😆)……that in every town or village in all parts of the Country, there will be a historic place of interest, church or building to visit… (You see, I have been watching fellow USA reactor videos on RU-vid and these are the things that they have said, loved and enjoyed! Sorry for cheating a bit by just repeating it all! 🥺😁)

Check out Britain's canals. You will be amazed by their tranquility and probably want to live on a narrow boat from that moment on. The Kennet and Avon is a particularly nice one but they are all beautiful in one way or another.

I used to work as a barmaid when I moved to the UK there'd be the regulars that would come in daily to socialise and have a Sunday roast with their misses. Unfortunately lots of them have been closing down recently.

Nowhere in the world will you find so much within such a relatively small geographical area as the UK. Mountains, lakes, islands, rolling hills, flat lands, moors, forests, beaches, canals, waterways [Norfolk Broads] and so many good beaches [we are an island]. We are four nations welded into one with 56 dialects and several languages. We have glorious cathedrals over 1,000 years old, ancient castles, Roman ruins, ancient monuments and medieval villages and churches. Despite the British inclination to moan about the weather, it doesn't actually rain all the time or indeed a lot. Paris, Washington DC, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, and Mexico City all have more rainy days on average in any given year than London. We are green 365 days a year. We have a temperate maritime climate not prone to extremes. We get four seasons and there used to be something beautiful in all four, but in recent years we haven't had the snow in winter that I grew up with. Winter here now is a horrible grey cold dampness albeit mild and cosy. We don't get earthquakes or tornadoes worth talking about. No water shortages. No wildlife here will kill you and we are in Europe - the very epicentre of fine culture and beauty. We don't have guns. We have the history, we have the architecture, we have the location, we have the scenery, we have the shopping, leisure, sport, entertainment and culture. We have all that can be desired, yes, even sun. We also have a lot of terrorists, crime and way too many people all living on top of each other in what are some of the ugliest and most depressing cities in the Western world.

I think its amazing that the 2 greatest countries on earth us and uk are so close as allies with common language its great i have been to vancouver also seattle next i am off to boston as the start of my 2 week road yrip around central us cant wait

Just to clarify, Right to roam, you cannot just walk on any land, especially privately owned land, yes you do have the right to roam on land that is designated right to roam, there is a path through it for you to enjoy, there are maps available to show you where you can walk. :)

i lik you talked about the ready meals, and to be honest you can deals, and they can be cheaper than making yourself, by the time you buy the ingredients, the time to cook it, the washing up, great for busy people, or just to grab on the way home again the sunday roast can be just as cheap, buy the time you buy everything for two people cooking the meat didhes and the likes, average price for sunday roast here in north is around 10.00 pouns, even at a carlvary, we having it tomorrow at our local, 9.99 for 3 meats and all the veg you can eat, with yorkshire pudding as well

The right to roam is true in Scotland but not in England. In England you can walk on all open land, such as moorland and coastline but you don’t have the right to walk across farm fields unless you use public rights of way and footpaths. You don’t have an automatic right to walk on private property unless it contains a public right of way.

The meal deal is high on the list for Americans as they have nothing like it in America. Sandwich + snack + drink from £3 upwards depending where you buy it.

I'm a Brit living in MD, USA right now... I can't wait to come home to the UK. I miss everything you mentioned as well as many other things, a lot of foodstuffs, pork pies, Ribena, various meat pies and pastries, sausage rolls, etc. The bread is better and more varied, the cheese is amazing.... oh, just everything, plus such a safer place to live. I don't live in a bad area but my son had an attempted mugging on our front porch, someone got shot (dead) just down the road across from our house and my garage has been broken into twice in the last 5 years. If it wasn't for my job and lots of friends I and my American wife would miss, i'd be relocating back tomorrow.

Many countries in Europe do not allow speed cameras to be enabled on navigation aids, something to be aware of if going over to Europe for a weekend or longer.

I definitely don't see any ageism I can think of. I'm 39 and most of my neighbours, and therefore several friends are in their 60s and 70s. I help them out if they need it, and they help me out if I need it. I've lived other places where there was less neighbours friendliness, but it's nice here

Agree with your comments about the traditional British or Irish pub, they are a wonderful community center. I find it so sad that for years now hundreds of these lovely pubs, starting with the country pubs, have been closing down.

Have you joined the library? There are so many different things that go on in local libraries these days, as well as borrowing books.

One thing that I would like to add is many more roads that have curves. It is much more fun in a car or on a motorbike.

Hi,i was in a little pub in yorkshire today,emty but for one man,i was with my daughter,looking on the wall i see a photo of the queen 2010,standing at the bar right in front of me,blacksmith cloughton,i never new she had ever been in a pub,but to think the queen had popped in for a drink was great.

And there are always loads of books in Charity Shops as well as masses of clothes, toys --- Everything!

You cannot buy alcohol every where. To sell alcohol the premises must be licensed as an off-licence. A licensed premises would be a pub or hotel. An off-licence can be granted by the local authorities licensing authority with police guidance if required. These days it is usually granted unless the area is known as an alcohol troubled area. There should be a small sign above the door with the licensee holder’s name. Today all supermarkets usually sell the full range of alcoholic drinks from ciders, beers, wines, spirits along with the trimmings of nuts and crisps (chips in the US). I think you should consider visiting Hay-On-Wye on the English Welsh border. A very pretty place but it is a town with dozens of second hand book shops, so many it has an annual festival.

I am sorry to say this, but the primary reason Americans enjoy the U.K. is because it is not full of Americans. Even Oxford - the typical American tourist’s favourite tramping ground has more Japanese and European tourists than American. When I studied at Oxford I lost count of the number of American tourists who stopped me in the street to ask “where is the University?” Most of them seemed totally of incapable of understanding that Oxford University is uniquely part of the central city itself and has been since the 14th. Century. Americans expect there should be a specific “campus” - which is does have - Oxford Brooke’s University which is at Headington, Oxford. (Yes, Oxford has TWO universities - both of very high standard!)

There is no right to roam in England. You can cross farmers land by public footpath which by law the farmer must maintain, but you cannot just walk anywhere on the farmers land...

We don't actually have Right to Roam - what we do have is a good network of Public Rights of Way (PRoW). Some of these tracks have existed for thousands of years (the Ridgeway is a prime example).

Just a warning about speed cameras. The video implies that the cameras are on main roads, but there are vast numbers in towns and suburbs on ordinary roads. There are warning signs but don't assume that if there is no sign there is no camera. Also, unlike generally in France, thee are frequently signs but no camears as these are potential sited for camera vans.

We have pubs in Ireland, too; they are similar to British pubs, but - usually - better!!

Square over 70 here. Live in the north west on a largish housing estate. There used to be 2 pubs local and one just up the road, over the past 10 years or so, all 3 have closed. As you suggest, you can get booze easily, and much cheaper to drink at home, thankfully because the price of drinking in a pub is beyond many people’s means. In my younger days I used to venture into Manchester City centre for the pubs and night life. After many years absence I returned recently and was a bit shocked that the city had been taken over by ‘cafe culture’ types - not my city at all! Regarding ‘cosyness’, yeah winters can be snuggly if you can afford to pay for your heating, many struggle. Fish and chips used to be a staple of English life - a cheap nourishing meal - whereas it used to cost pennies, it now costs pounds, making it a luxury for most around here. You can’t really walk ‘wherever you like here’, there are public rights of way across private land, but they have to be stuck to! The police can be helpful, though it can depend on who you are. In my local town two thirds of the high street shops have closed down. One thing I will say is that travelling on buses (and local trains and trams at a small initial cost) is free for person of pensionable age. I suspect it’s something of a north/south, comfortable/skint divide?

Not me my high street not too bad. Only few empty shops in the highbdtreet itself off the high street it is bad empty spaces but some spaces never been taken up from the time thevshopping centre was open but the council are going to change it soon cinema etc. I agree people are lazy not going shopping and usung internet for shopping of course some people cant go shopping cant walk well etc but for the others go shopping. Im old but i hope i can go shopping for some time yet

No. 13 Speed cameras: the cops can and do 'ambush' you, especially on A roads and motorways; they don't just rely on cameras.

The right to roam is true to a certain extent. That word 'some' is very important in your statement as you can't freely walk on all land. A lot of land is not accessible if it hasn't got a right of way crossing it. If it has a right of way, this must be kept to as you are trespassing elsewhere on that land. There is a lot more access in Scotland than in England and access in Wales is restricted in many places. Speed cameras and CCTV are everywhere, especially in urban areas. It is now possible to see how many people are travelling in each vehicle. Never use a mobile phone while driving as you will be prosecuted. Public transport is good again in urban areas and to and from urban areas. Rural areas don't always have public transport even if there is a timetable. Our village has a bus timetable saying that there are five buses a day passing through. A bus has not been seen here in 30 years. Our nearest shop is 18 miles away and the only way to town is by car. You can have a taxi but when a journey of 18 miles costs £32 per person, it's not at all a cheap way to travel.

We have some thoroughly bad police, but there are very few of them, and they are being rooted out.

No. 10 the Right to Roam: this exists *only* in Scotland. In England and Wales, you are required to follow dedicated footpaths and bridleways (consult OS maps).

I prefer the UK and Europe than America. There the people are more down to earth and mature and it's easier to make friends and connect with strangers, whereas Americans are more closed off and cliquish and less social. There are also more old souls in Europe to connect with. As an old soul that's an issue for me. Americans tend to be airheadish and the women are impossible to connect with. I also never feel social anxiety in crowds in Europe, but I do in America. So social anxiety is a location thing, not a problem with me like US psychologists falsely assume. The US is also socially isolating and alienating whereas in Europe I feel more social connection and comfortable in my own skin and I can date and connect with women there too. White women in Europe are also more social and friendly and easier to connect with whereas white women in the US are impossible to connect with and unfriendly too.

The walking, we all walk a lot here.

The right to roam applies in Scotland but we can't walk just anywhere in England & Wales. However we have 150,000 miles of Public Footpaths in Great Britain many of which criss cross the countryside

Thinking about retiring to UK - Wife is citizen and I am US. Is it true that the UK does NOT tax Social Security or Pensions ? After reading some of the replies I did a deep dive and have found out that my Military Pension and our SS payments are only taxed by the U.S. and will not be taxed by UK under the Double Taxation Treaty. We would pay taxes to the U.S. only on income derived from the US (Pension and Social Security).

Americans and British holding out in the world for Imperial measurements -Miles are romantic, Kilometers dull and boring. Metric is turning people into automatons, Imperial is organic (feet and inches)and human.

In England and Wales there is no universal "right to roam" and you cannot "walk where ever you like" There are thousands of Public Footpaths which allow you to cross private land but deviating from the footpath is technically trespass. There are areas in England and Wales where you can walk anywhere such as National Parks, e.g. The Peak District, The Lake District, etc. Additionally there are areas designated as Open Access by the landowners. Scotland is different but you will need to research that. Please correct that mis-information to avoid your fellow countrymen from coming into conflict with land owners.

In Scotland you have the right to roam and wild camp (excepting some National park Camping) as long as you follow the Outdoor Access Code. Also please don't equate the UK with England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all currently part of UK.

Left Florida for Scotland in 86, most things are better here. Less crime, NHS despite the Conservatives is still a lot better than the US healthcare system. My taxes are almost identical but both nations have sneaky stealth taxes, green, local government etc. Weather is garbage a lot of the time but coats and hats are available.

We often seem to be ripped off but it feels far worse in the US, part of which is the mad tipping culture. We tip but bssed on service. It's expected in the US and acts more like an extra tax. You can always get mince pies in England. Love our chippy and I always have a batteted sausage as well. One thing I missed in the US was small local shops such as newsagents. Many of these also have a Post Office. Speed cameras are a scourge, I hate them. I wouldn't mind if it was just a fine bur you get points on your license. Twelve points and you face disqualification. We have Private Eye if you want satire. The other things I missed in the US were good curry's. Virtually every small town will have at least one Indian, ine Chinese, a pizza and a kebab/burger take-away

You are not exactly right about the right to roam, you have to stick to paths that are signed clearly, and there are hundreds of thousands of them, but you can't just walk anywhere you like.

Was adooted in the USA brought to the UK as a 13 yo with no government or state id such as a passport or birth certificate ( the birth certificate was purposely hidden by the English birth mother ànd her northern Irish husband from me) i have faced race hate ( being born in the US i came straight out of the Bronx) day after day I've been told to get out of the UK go back to your birth land my tyie isn't wanted here, so good to hear that after 50 years paying taxes no criminal records or any kind was told once not to bother integrating with the locals as i wasn't born here im still a dirty foreigner not wanted or welcome, and that rings true ad I'm now on the UK deportation list the only crime I have committed is i have no government id (passport drivers license etc only UK official documents excepted) i wouldn't advise any American Canadian etc too even think about living in the UK just don't do it unless your already used too race hate

Im Sorry to say that the great british high street is slowly dying, that is all because of the rise of the internet, and the surge in internet shopping, people are becoming so lazy these day, most now do most of their shopping on line ? 🤮 Just look around your local city, most of the big stores have or are closing down, they certainly are in my town ! the high street has changed, it's not like it was anymore, like when i was a kid.

I have to disagree on fish and chips, although good ones can be found there's far too many that just aren't good. I come from New Zealand and was quite shocked at the general standard of fish and chips over here, i had never in my life seen chips served from a warmer, in NZ they are always cooked to order, and a much wider range of very fresh fish.

Regards motoring penalties, there is a war on motorists C40 cities, mainly income for councils, mobile camera ambush vans are used with no signage, also fines for bus lanes/yellow box junctions /speed awareness course £90/ congestion charge/20 mph limit/LTN flower planters/ residents parking permits/expensive car parks including stations /potholes/tolls/timed parking and fines in supermarkets and retail parks/ price of fuel/ annual road tax/ annual safety inspection/insurance premiums/

There's no freedom to walk anywhere, there are ancient rights of way which are marked, do not walk through the middle of a field of crops unless marked.
