The ship agent is the person (company) who represents the ship/shipowner at the port where shipowner’s ship has called (for loading, discharging or other business/reasons). In order a ship shipowner or manager of a ship appoint a ship agent, he will send an email to him asking the amount of the ship’s port expenses (port dues, agency fees etc.) which the ship will have to pay during her stay at the port of call. Then, the shipowner/manager will appoint the agent for his ship at the port of call, and from the time of ship’s arrival until her departure the ship will be represented by the ship agent on behalf of the shipowner/manager.
