I'm going to suggest a very old (60's) one from Japan, called Tampopo. It's sort of a foodie movie, but it DID influence Tarantino's performance in Sukiyaki Western Django. It's in color, all subtitles, but very fun and just enough strange to be engaging. The MAIN story is about a widowed woman trying to have the best ramen shop around, and the help she gets accomplishing that, with a couple of odd side stories that pop in and out. It's a comic delight, you might believe Oriental comedy can be rather inscrutable but it's up front and evident with this one.
💖ed "Running scared" as well as "Upgrade" ... Oh! Theres an UNDERATED TV show on Max called "Wellington Paranormal" which is done by the same ppl as "What we do in the shadows...." "Wellington Paranormal" really is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!! I laughed soo hard w this show. Great watch!
Gahhh, I just canceled my Max/hbo subcrptn after 2 yrs of having it. They really annoyed me after I changed my sub to the $99 w SOME ads, but also changed from the payment from my debit to my credit card (I wanted the money back % on reoccurring charges) and they saved the changes to my subscription, added my credit card, but STILL charged my debit card, gahhhh!!!! And I had other things charged at the same time & of course they refunded it, but it still took a few days to land in my account and I had to rush to the bank to make sure I didnt overdraft. VERY annoying & they said they werent sure why it did that. I waited to renew to make sure the refund went through, then just too annoyed to renew and now Im not sure I want to, lol, but this video might just convince me I should..... Lol! THankssss Darren, gonna cost me $99 today ;P Lol!
The house of sand and fog is the most depressing movie I have ever watched, but it was a great movie. I've wanted to rewatch it several times, but I can't bring myself to do it 😭
Love your vids as always, and any reference to Kathryn Bigelow's Strange Days get's a like from me. As an aside, I'd love to see a top ten of alien invasion/occupation/dystopia movies, perhaps with some lesser known titles in there! As you ended with your outro, we'll certainly keep watching. Always good for something off the radar to watch.
Good choices. I haven’t seen them all, but I agree with ‘House of Sand & Fog’, ‘Out of the Furnace’, ‘Upgrade’ and ‘Strange Days’ (which until recently, I had never realized was a Kathryn Bigelow/James Cameron project.) Some of my other underrated favorites would include ‘The 13th Warrior’ with Antonio Banderas, ‘Serenity’ with Nathan Fillion, ‘Warrior’ with Joel Edgerton, the remake of ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ with Jim Caviezel, ‘Deja Vu’ with Denzel Washington, and more recently, ‘The Menu’ with Anya Taylor-Joy.
In my experience "playing in the woods" could mean a lot of things! For me & my friends, it meant drinking cheap wine, smoking weed and bonfires, what was it for you? Excited to watch Runner, Upgrade & MUD! Thanks!✌️
You are getting better and better at this. I have seen about 16 or your 18 proposed flicks. This brought me back to them for an X re-viewing session and the wanting for something new. Great job.
✨️🤩👍✨️ STRANGE DAYS is SO DAMN GOOD!!! On SO MANY levels. It deserves SO MUCH MORE than it's ever gotten. BRAINSTORM meets MARLOWE. Flat-Out FANTASTIC 🎉 SOURCE CODE is just as clever, with phenomenal performances & an ending WORTHY of its audience. BETTER -- and MORE satisfying -- than ANYTHING Nolan's ever created 😅👍
Great list, saved me a ton of time looking for something to watch at 1 in the morning. Going to watch Spartan, never heard of it, until now. Looks like a good flick!
Running Scared (2006) is a movie that deserves the accolades it never gets. Such a stylistic shot film. It’s clear that New Line/Warner Brothers had no idea how or what to do with it. Paul Walker is incredible in it.
Just came across your channel. I can say without a doubt, after seeing your movie list, you have great taste in cinema. Some fantastic flixs in this list.
Just watched "Gray" the other night. Very well done and it keeps you on the edge of your seat right up until the end. And then you look at whoever you watching it with and say " what a terrible ending!".
Interesting...Appaloosa seems to be the birth of "the man in black" in the modern version of Westworld - same actor, too. Appaloosa is now definitely on my list of things to watch. Thanks, man.
Dawg, Running Scared, The Grey, and Upgrade are movies I recommned to ppl cuz they're are just beautiful movies. I'm glad I know and recognize beauty when I see it.
I read the novel The Getaway not too long ago. Jim Thompson is so good, very underrated. He also wrote The Grifters which was made into an excellent movie starring John Cusack.
Be Kind Rewind is a great flick. It's a family favorite of ours. Makes us miss Mos Def. We loved watching him perform in this as well as 16 Blocks, Hitchhiker's Guide, and The Italian Job.
I have a special shelf for my favorite DVDs all-time and "Mud" and "Out of the Furnace" are on it. Both are great movies! My favorites are generally intense character-driven dramas with little to no CGI, so these two really nail it for my tastes. Others on this special shelf of mine are Mystic River.....Falling Down....Wind River....Winter's Bone.... Derailed.....American Beauty....Blood Father..... Spotlight....The Hunter..... The Square....Hell or High Water.... Chloe....The Lincoln Lawyer....Lost in the Sun.....Best Man Down....Sicario
Great FLICK CONNECTION Darren. Love the presentations you do and the synopsis on each one. Not sure if you’ve reviewed a fantastic film from Finland, titled SISU. Set in Finland during 1944 surrounding this legendary Finnish commander who has killed more than 300 Russian soldiers in the World War II conflict. Filmed on a limited budget of 6,000,000 €. Cinematography is superb and is very much influenced by Quentin Tarantino. Many thanks for sharing this FC with us 👍💎👍💎👍
Great call on badlands, and for those who haven’t seen days of heaven directed by Malick as well it is one of the most beautifully filmed movies you will ever watch
I've seen quite a few of these and would have to agree so that makes me want to check out the ones i haven't seen yet...thx. It's always nice to have a few flicks on standby for when you're not sure what you want to watch and looking for something new.
Do you know older movies? I grew up a movie freak, starting with the MGM classics on TV. Imitation of Life, The Bishop’s Wife (with beautiful Loretta Young, Cary Grant & David Niven; the special effects are unreal), The Song of Bernadette are just a few that I’ve watched over & over as the decades go by. Just curious if you do those kind of reviews too. BTW, I just bought 3 of your tee shirts! 😊
I have always loved the movie Strange Days! I have not seen it in a long time though. I have seen around half of these but before I go for the other half I am going to re-watch that one! Thanks!
When I saw a glimpse of Ben Kingsley, I was thinking "Man I hope it's House of Sand and Fog!" and you didn't disappoint! It's a slow, sad, and dreary affair but a great film as well!
What about Dutch. You need to introduce that movie to your audience. Holiday movie special or something. Just a suggestion. Love the shirts and keep up the great work.
Strange Days is a great movie - but not about virtual reality at all - it is about recording and reliving your own or someone else's memories/experiences
Thanks for the great list.. one comment from an Alaskan hiker.. The Grey - kind of jaws for wolves.. Implies that if you step out side for a moment in Alaska a giant wolf will fly across the screen and tear your head off :) Just sayin.. A wolf wants absolutely nothing to do with a human. I have only seen one or 2 in my life and none up close.. Still a great movie, just take it as complete fiction. Cheers. Oh and its been a while since i watched it but iI am sure like 99% of all Alaskan films.. it was filmed in Canada.
