Producing your own solar electricity, it's a cool idea right? But when is the right time to go solar? In part III of our Smart Home Series, we talk to Ron Kube, who installed solar on his home and Clifton Lofthaug of Great Canadian Solar about everything you need to know before going solar. See blog, photos and CKUA podcast: www.greenenergy...

So there are very few places in US where you are paid the same rate to sell as you do to buy. Wish we were paid equally here on Gulf coast.

It's amazing how much the cost of solar has come down, and the hardware has evolved even since then.

the grid is not a battery. Unless the grid has built in power storage no power is stored. Thinking that the grid is power storage will damage the sustainability in the long run. There needs to be a storage fee along with adding storage to the grid if you are not going to have battery storage in your solar system.

It should be noted that you can significantly reduce the cost of your setup by doing it yourself. You can save 50-75% by installing it yourself. Only about 25% of those figures is the cost of the panels themselves.

In Alberta you only get the rebate when you have it installed by a certified company as far as I know. So that might change the calculation. Also if you have problems with the system, it's definitely easier just to call your installer and let him handle it.

That is correct about the rebate but if I can save 75% and the rebate is only 25%, I still earn significant savings. I would love to have someone install a system for me but price is my number one obstacle. I have no other option but to do it myself, plus it would be fun for me.

@@PhilippLeberer all depends on how you see it. By doing it yourself you not only save a LOT of money but you learn about it and thus are able to find the problem and fix it yourself.

In the US a lot of cities or power utilities now do tariffs and not net metering.. so you don't get the same in as out.

in Belgium u have to pay to put electricity back on the grid ;)
@winnipegnick

What the heck? Do you mean you have to pay a 1 time fee? Or per watt?

I read an article about a gentleman in Nova Scotia who paid tens of thousands of dollars for a large home solar system. The electrical utility charged him GST on electricity that he produced. He had already paid GST on the PV panels.

@Lorne...he didn't get the special bi-directional power meter needed for a permitted solar installation. The standard digital (not so smart) meters will often charge you for power coming and going. The old analogue meters are probably OK too... it's easy to check. They'll either run backwards crediting you with power or will stop cold if your producing more power than used. Big Brother electric utilities don't like them because they are dumb, they have to be read manually and there is no information as to how much is used and how much power you generate... I kinda like that.

holy fuck, thats a lot for avarage homes ... Canada vs Belgium 7200 vs 4000kwh (avarage house) 16.500$ vs 6000€ (5.5kw installations) If u have roof to the south and a lot of sun u have to be insane to not do this...

The project like this step by step is described on the Avasva website and many more plans you can find on that website.

...check to make sure the sub-division you live in does not have a restrictive covenant that prevents you from changing the appearance of your house. Put solar on your roof and sure as heck some weenie will phone their lawyer and you'll be getting a letter telling you to remove it... because it violates a restrictive covenant you didn't even know or remember existed. At the very least get a waiver or permission first.

To tell the story of how solar works and why a homeowner buys solar, we found a customer (Ron) and he had used Great Canadian Solar to install his system so we interviewed Clifton from the company. We heard good things about the company so we decided this was a great choice for the story. We think they both describe the experience very well. No funds were received from any solar company to do this story.

Folks ... let's make something clear here ... Solar energy will not replace fossil fuels in all its forms as it is used today ... However ... the story is like this ... that is, solar energy is very "expensive" but do you know that the production of CO2 when you burn fossil fuels is not yet part of the electricity bill? ... If you add the fossil fuel pollution to the total cost ... then ... maybe solar power is not that expensive ... At some point ... you have to do your own research and come to your own conclusions . Again ... here in Puerto Rico we have a lot of sun all year round ... but we also have a hurricane season ... Therefore our solar panels must be installed to withstand winds of around 150 MPH ... Two years ago I completed an experimental project ... drop by ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2nYy4M1FReY.html. Comments are welcome. Thank you.

At utility-scale solar now rivals wind power as the cheapest electricity money can buy by almost a factor of two.

Grid down = no power. You spent a lot of money to NOT have power when the grid goes down. Dumb.

Where I live in B.C. , 5 miles from town , we had a stretch of about 11-12 years in a 25 year period with no power outages at all and a total of 10-15 hours without power in the remaining years put together , how much would it cost to add a battery system and maintain it for 25 years and not really need it?!
@richardfryer8646
@richardfryer8646 6 лет назад
In Anthony's case for those few hours of no power, the smart money says just buy a small 1000-1500 watt 220V gen set, probably only worth a few hundred dollars, manually flip the main breaker to the grid off and power up your house; I installed a separate 220V dryer plug purchased at Home Depot and wired it into the main breaker box. We should be planning for occasional weather related outages, not Armageddon.

If that concerns u. U could go with a hybrid system but the best value for now is a grid tie system.

renewable energy has destroyed the Australian power grid. The glut of day time solar energy means the feed in tariff was dropped dramatically to 8c/kw/hr. Night time tariff power provided by coal base load is 30 to 40c/kw/hr. Coal stations are continuing to close which means brown outs and black outs for consumers. Home owners are financially much better off to abandon the grid, use battery back up over night and concentrate energy use during the day. Recharging an EV car sounds great except that the lithium battery depreciation ( life span) is far more than the per kilometer cost of diesel or gas. Any country going down this path will become a post industrial waste land with a crippled economy and no jobs. Or follow China down the path of using Thorium energy and with electricity at half the cost of coal will dominate the world and attract all jobs,investment and development. But we already know that solar-philes pushing this ill thought out garbage would have hissy fits and scream at the sky at the thought of using Thorium to power the economy.
@richardfryer8646
@richardfryer8646 6 лет назад
@wazza ....thorium energy?? That's a radioactive isotope..maybe has medical uses, but... ?? ..the use of thorium in power generation is about in the same class as cold fusion, a nice idea that's gone nowhere.
@wazza33racer
@wazza33racer 6 лет назад
China commissioned two prototype reactors just recently representing a US 4 billion investment. Regular conferences are hosted by China, hosting international experts to discuss developments in the field. The only drawback of Thorium that most countries found objectionable was no application for weapons. The fissile step material produced by Th-232 is U-233 which is impractical for nuclear weapons.

@richardfryer8646

...not only that, if you do want to have it professionally installed get a detailed list of the costs, not a packaged turnkey price. That way you know how much each item costs, the panels, the grid-tie inverter, installation and so on, then you can compare. The 'soft costs', things you can do yourself if your handy, are often more than the hardware costs alone. There are wholesalers who sell grade A or B solar panels online, often charging as little as 50 or 60 cents a watt, and they will ship. Phone them and talk to them. Above all, do a power budget from your bills and look at the solar irradience maps for your area to determine what you really need, not what the sales guys say you should have. Living in Phoenix is very different than living in Seattle or Portland.
